Mathew Callaghan--OCallaghan~~who's his father?~~

Trying to trace the parents of Matthew Callaghan(OCallaghan)
On his son marriage record- Ontario,Canada Marriage 1801-1928 for Stephen Callaghan. ~Carleton>1877>page 115 of 148.
Just say parents- Matthew and Mary.Birthplace Ireland. (I went through all 148 pages looking for another OCallaghan, and found nothing.) Also on his baptism record~ Ontario Canada Catholic Church Drouin Collection 1747-1967.
F>Fallowfield>1851-1968 pg 14 of 710
It's so faded looks like Mathew Calahan and Mary Dimon.
Other family trees have said the name was Desmons or Diamond. But no other tree has traced Matthew farther back.
Any help would be so appreciated....
Also I found a 1851 Census of Canada East.Shows
Mathew 45 married to Mary A age 27.Listed are 5 children- no Stephen. In a 1861 Census....no parents listed, yet all children are the same with a Stephen now 7yrs and a Cornelious age 5 added.....Could this be the right parents?

Just ran across your thread, hope it is active.

I have Elizabeth Stockwell D/O John Alonzo Stockwell and Ellen Callahan. Elizabeth born 8/1843 in Ontario Canada, married Thomas Regan 5/8/1861 in Lampton, Ontario. 1900 US Census from Cottrellville Twp(Marine City)/St Clair County, Michigan, has her a widow, 14 births, 8 living. She died 8/12/1905 in Cottrellville, buried in Holy Cross cemetery, Marine City.

I have US census records for 1870 and 1880 also.

Holy Cross records are a little confusing, they have Thomas married to Catherine Stockwell but not Elizabeth. Thomas has a large tombstone with only his name and birth and death dates inscribed. Children listed in chucrh records list Thomas and Elizabeth as parents, but not Catherine.

Thomas Regan is eldest son of Daniel and Catherine Loftus, my ggggparents, from Mayo County, arrived in NY in 1854, with 8 children, moved to Michigan and farmed 40 acres in Cottrellville.

David Callaghan in Banbridge, County Down

Hello,

I am looking for information about David Callaghan and his family. David Callaghan married Elizabeth Jane McCourt on 25 July 1874 in Banbridge, County Down, Northern Ireland. David was listed as "full age" and his father is Edward Callaghan. Eliza Jane McCourt is also of full age and her father is Hugh McCourt (my great grandfather).

David and Eliza Jane had the following children:

Hugh born 21 Sept 1877 and died in 1881

Eliza Jane born 1881 - may have immigrated to the US in 1908

David born 1879 and married to Mary Laverty on 7 Jan 1905 in Banbridge. David is listed as a soldier, living on Scrava Street in Banbridge, and his witness is William Callaghan. Mary Laverty's witness is listed as Margaret Gartlan.

William James born 12 Dec 1882, and married to Margaret Gartland on 23 April 1906 in Banbridge. He is listed as a labourer and living on Scarva Street. His witness is James Donnelly. Margaret's witness is Mary Callaghan.

Joseph born 14 April 1887.

On the 1901 Irish Census David Callaghan is listed as age 60, a widower, living with his son Joseph, age 14 on George's Rowe in Banbridge. (David's wife, Eliz Jane died in 1889)

Also on the 1901 census William Callaghan is listed living with his aunt, Elizabeth McCourt. William is listed as a factory worker, and they are living on Anderson Street in Banbridge.

On the 1911 Irish census there is a David Callaghan age 72 born in Banbridge. He is a general labourer, and a widower. He is living with William Card in Belfast and is listed as his uncle. Also in the household are James Patrick Card age 25, William's son, and Sarah Card age 24, William's daughter in law.

Also in the 1911 census William Callaghan, age 26 and his wife Maggie, age 26, are living on Commercial Road in Banbridge. Both are listed as weavers.

On the 1901 Irish census in William Card's household in Belfast there is a Thomas Callaghan living with them. He is listed as a cousin and as a Privite in the Royal Irish Rifles. I think I found Thomas Callaghan's military records. He was born in about 1874 in Seapatrick, County Down. AS next of kin he ilstes his father as David Callaghan living at Library Lane in Banbridge, and his brothers, Joseph, David, and Willaim who are all younger than him and living in Banbridge.

So ---- is Thomas also a son of David and Eliza Jane Callaghan?? I haven't found a birth record for him yet.

I don't know what happened to Joseph Callaghan but on the ship manifest when his sister Eliza Jane Callaghan comes to America she lists her brother Joseph Callaghan as her closest contact/relative in Banbridge. Eliza Jane says her sister paid her way to America. She lists Mrs Thoams Williamson, 8 Winthorpe Palce, Brookline, Massachusetts as her sister, but it also says "friend" on the ship manifest. So I don't know if she really is a sister and I don't know what happened to Eliza Jane after she got to Brookline.

Eliza Jane McCourt was my grandfather's sister and I would love to make contact with any of her decsendants.

Thanks.
  Winifred Callaghan in Ireland

Greetings: my Winifred was born 1834/35 - she was 14 when she was sent to Australia on the Earl Grey scheme in 1850. I've tried hard to find her before the Workhouse, or even to confirm which workhouse, but in / near Dublin. Her parents are given as Mary and William Callaghan, on the emigrant ship record, which is probably true . . . so we may be distantly related, but um . . . Irish records are very hard to deal with. When you get really stuck, get a small amount of paid research done. - migs

Is your Winifred Callaghan the daughter of Thady Callaghan and Bridget Vezy? My Greatgrandmother was Winifred Callaghan from Roscommon Ireland. On her marriage certificate to Michael Gara her father is Thady Callaghan but no mother is listed. Many of her decendents show Bridget Vezy as her mother but I do not have any proof of this. My Winifred was probably born about 1845. Can you help. She lived in Ireland her whole life. Thanks

Looking to trace his family in Ireland. He was a tanner and I believe his father was a tanner also, but he moved to Cornwall before immigrating to Australia. Any leads on his ancestry will be greatly appreciated. I have all his family tree in Australia.

I'm sorry, this probably won't help you on your particular search, but I, too am searching for a Calla(g)han-Doherty couple and their families. James Callahan and Mary Doherty had my g-g-mother Annie in Donegal in 1868 and at least 2, Hannah and Mary, and maybe 3 (Bridget) sisters after. James died in 1873, Mary probably in 1883 before Sept when the 2 older girls immigrated to Pittsburgh, PA. They went to live with 2 maiden aunts in their late 40s, named Ann and Kate Gibbons.
Family lore tells of a Doherty going to Australia and becoming known as the King of Rochester (I think?). I have not been able to find out anything about that. To confuse things, young Mary Callahan married John Callaghan in 1892 or so and they lived in Letterkenny. There is also lore about a female Doherty going to Aus. and becoming a writer (maybe the "King's" daughter). I'll ask my aunt more about that. Could there be a connection? Could your John be the "King?" ;)

All nine of Denis and Margaret's children (of which I have records) were baptized in Coachford Parish. On the records until 1888, the family is listed as living in Rylane. In the 1901 and 1911 census records, the family was living in Rylane. The Poor Law Union was Macroom.

None of the records I have for that family came from Kilmacrane Banteer.

Hi,

Thanks for the message. I re-read your e-mail after I responded and realized that you were in NJ. That seems to be the area our family settled in once they arrived from Ireland.

My great-grandparents lived in Newark at some point. I am not sure for how long as they later moved to Belmar. My great-grandfather, Mike worked for the City of Newark driving a trolley.

My grandfather was also named Michael, but his family called him Joe. He was Winnie's brother and therefore was also your mother's first cousin. He worked for IBM and died in 1964.

I really liked my great-aunt Winnie. She taught me a lot about our family. She was a very nice person and I was lucky to have known her. Barbara is a sweetheart. I have only met Pat once, but she was very nice as well.

They were not able to go back very far unfortunately.

Is the name Callahan or Callaghan?

am trying to trace the family of my great grandmother Annie Callaghan. she was born around 1860 in Deptford, London and I believe, although not 100% sure, that her parents were Dennis (born 1825 Limerick) and Julia (born 1829 Limerick). They were living in Deptford by the time they had their first child Mary in 1849.
Annie and my great grandfather George Samual Rice got as far as having marriage banns read but there is no record of a marriage even though she was thereafter known as Annie Rice. They stayed in UK.
If by any remote chance you have some information I would be extremely grateful.
Some of the family dropped the 'O' once settled. I can trace their whereabouts in Vic, but cannot confirm anything prior to 1860.
Thanks, Trish O'Callaghan

Carracher and Callaghan, Blantyre and Hamilton

Hi all,

Me again, hope this finds you all well

On my research trail again.... Seeing as I'm getting nowhere fast with my Lithuanian side I decided to concentrate more on my Scottish side and I though I'd look for my Grandmother's siblings. Much too my surprise I found my granny's youngest sibling, her sister Frances who was born in 1908c and I found her death cert on SP stating that she died in 2002 aged 94 If only I'd known this years ago I could have tried to see her and find out if she could fill in some blanks. Anyways, I'm now looking to see if anyone recognises the names and knows if any of Frances' children are still alive and maybe just maybe they may have some photos of my gran and/or grandad or some stories they could tell me.

Frances Callaghan was born in Blantyre to William and Ann Callaghan (nee Summers) I'm not sure if she married only the once, but the name given when she died is Carracher from Hamilton, Lanarkshire. My grandmother was Mary Callaghan married to John (Jonas) Polockus from Blantrye. If any of this jogs any memories please don't hesitate to contact me.

Thanking you all in advance.
Katie
Do you know if your Thady Callaghan might have had a sister named Winifred. My great-grandmother Winifred Callighan was born in same place about 1854. She married a Michael Gara and spent her life there. She died between 1901 and 1911. Thank You for any information you might have. Do you know the name of Thady Callaghan's parents.

Re: Jeremiah Thomas Fitzgerald Callaghan, Midleton, County Cork

Hi, I have just seen you postings. Just discovered I have a Thomas Callaghan in Midleton born in this same era. Have not an exact date as yet. He is the nephew of my grgr grandfather Just wondering if you have found more info re the parents or siblings? Know the parents names and siblings but not sure it is the same man. I see on Cork births there is a Jeremiah born 1834, The reason I did wonder is Thomas mother was a Charlotte FitzGerald. So far I have only info re. Thomas word of mouth as it were. If he is the same happy to help with what little I do have. Thanks Maureen
