Henry Calaby married Phoebe Smith in West Lexham, Co. Norfolk in 1828. They immigrated to South Australia in 1839, and most Australian descendants are known. Their son Henry m. Margaret Johnstone in 1841 and they moved to Victoria and started the Victorian branch. I cannot get back further than Henry Calaby and Phoebe Smith of West Lexham, so would be grateful for any help I could have regarding the parents of this couple. Many thanks.

I am married to a Calaby grandson and have a lot of information about the UK side of the family. We are planning to go to the Norfolk Records Office later this year with a view to looking for Henry Calaby's parents.

What is your interest in the family?

Dear Lesli,

I am a Calaby daughter, with a correct ascent to Henry m. Phoebe Calaby, West Lexham, Co. Norfolk, who came to Sth Aust in 1839 on the 'Duchess of Northumberland.' One of their children was Henry, from whom I descend.

Henry m. Margaret Johnstone, and they started the Victorian Calabys. If you are a Calaby, then we are related, but I'm sure you know that already. Are you from Thomas m. Janet Frame, or other siblings?

Please let me know more. I have visited West Lexham 4 times. I have studied the parish registers of West Lexham and environs for the parents of Hy and Phoebe. When I was in Norfolk I went to Castleacre, near W.Lexham, and there is a tombstone for William Calaby m.Elizabeth Seal. This couple COULD be grandparents of Henry. Difficult as it may be finding his parents, Phoebe Smith is more so. 'Smith' is the problem. And she is not from Thomas Smith and Hannah Goring - they had another daughter b. same year as Phoebe, in East Lexham.

I have a lot of info, as you do, including shipping, birth and death certificates, property details of Henry and Thomas, in Sth. Aust., and Henry in Victoria. Also other items of interest which I am more than willing to share with you. I have the births from the P.R's of Henry m. Mgt Johnstone, and of his brother Isaac, as well as the marriage of Henry and Phoebe. I also have the death certificate of Charles - he fell off a windmill!! If you are from Thomas and Janet, I have a newspaper photo of Thomas,a 4 generations photo.

I would welcome a reply from you, giving me details of your family. That way, we can connect. When are you going to lovely Norfolk?

Regards, Judie Morrish.

Dear Judie,

Thank you for your note, I am delighted to hear from you and would like to give you more information but I am, to say the least, not very happy about posting personal info on the internet. Do you think you could e-mail me direct on l-wheeler@payne-hicks-beach.co.uk (which is my work) or lmw1956@hotmail.com (although I can only pick these up at weekends) and I will then let you have more personal details. Of course, anyone else who logs in to the Calaby name will see our correspondence to date and would still be welcome to join in, albeit a little more privately.

I am married to a Calaby grandson, his grandfather was born in Norfolk in 1891 and we have the family tree from there on and a little way before. Only started about a year ago.

Look forward to hearing from you with your e-mail address and I will contact you again.

Regards

Lesli

I have just found out that my maternal grandmother was a Hettie Calaby born in 1884/5 in Norfolk. My mother seemed to think it was Litchford, but I can't find this place on the map.

Pat

Many thanks for your message - I am replying in haste and have not checked Hettie against my records but the place she was born would have been LITCHAM which is where my mother in law was born and where, it would seem, most of the Calabys lived.

Welcome to the family!

If you want any further info, let me know. I have loads of names, details of births etc but not on a proper database or very organised yet! You are also a member of the Calaby family in Australia! There are only about 500 Calaby's in the world.

Regards
