Hi, am one of those Patafio's from Canada. I was born in Scilla, Italy and I immigrated to Canada with my mother Maria and my brother Rocco in 1956 to join our father Francesco Patafio. My father wanted to immigrate to New York as his father Rocco had in 1905 and his grandfather Francesco Ciccone in 1896. There are many related Patafio's in New York from my grandfathers family. (Rocco, Onofrio, Salvadori and Angela)

Hello! We may be related! My maternal Grandfather, Salvatore & Grandmother, Maria, immigrated to NY from Scilla in 1920. He also had a brother Onofrio. He said that some of the relatives could not enter the US so they went to Canada. Trying to locate Canadian relatives. Please reply!
Thx
Maria

You are absolutely correct, we are related. Uncle Onofrio is my great uncle. He had a brother named Salvatore, a sister Angelina and another brother named Rocco. Rocco was my grandfather, I have documents of his immigration to the U.S. Most of his children immigrated to Canada. His children were Antonio, Giovanna, Francesco, Onofrio and Mimma. My father was Francesco. Keep in touch my email is jo.epatafio@gmail.com.

Hello,

I just came across your message board today. My mother is a Patafio by birth and we are from the US. All of the Patafios that I know of and are related to are from New York. I knew there were Patafios in Canada but I do not know how or if there is a connection. I've been trying to investigate it but have been having some difficulties and then I found your message posting today which was quite intriguing.

I know the family came from Calabria in the late 1800s, early 1900s. My great-grandfather, Francesco Patafio, emigrated from Reggio Calabria in 1900, along with his mother and two sisters. His father, Agostino Patafio, had emigrated to the United States in 1913, but that passenger manifest states that he had been to the U.S. before, once in 1898 and then again in 1912.

The April 23, 1898 manifest states that Agostino Patafio emigrated from Reggio, Italy. Since others on the same page are listed as being from Scilla, I think in this case, that "Reggio" refers to the city of Reggio di Calabria and not just the province of Reggio Calabria.

There is a February, 19, 1913 manifest, which indicates that Agostino and a son, Vittorio were to travel to the U.S. However, their names are crossed out, which I am told, means that they did not sail on that trip. Agostino and his son are both listed as living in Scilla. However, it also states that Agostino was born in Scilla, while Vittorio was born in Nicastro.

There is another manifest from February 26, 1913 (on which both Agostino Patafio and Vittorio Patafio did sail) which states that Agostino Patafio and Vittorio Patafio both lived in Scilla but both of them are listed as being born in Nicastro. So there seems to be some flip-flopping between Scilla and Nicastro, but the connection to both is definitely there it seems.

If you're interested in exchanging information, let me know. I'd love to hear from you.

- Laura
