My father's family immigrated from Italy to the US from a very small town named Santomenna, in the province of Salerno, about 40 miles from the city of Salerno. Saverio.

My grandfather, was born in 1871 and first came to the US in 1887, with his brothers, Nicola, Francesco and Angelo. They all, eventually, settled in Jersey City, NJ, and had large families.

My grandfather and his brothers died between 1916 and 1956, and are all burried in the Holy Name Cemetary in Jersey City. My own father, Gerard, is now 84, and the last of about 25 cousins, all of whom lived their lives in the Northern New Jersey area where they also had large families.

I have visited Santomenna and have records that go back to the mid 1700's. Those records show that my great grandfather was Leonardo and that he had two brothers, Giuseppe and Domenico, both of whom had large families that also came to the US. My gg grandfather was Felice Nicola and his father was Saverio, my grandfather's namesake.

I am looking for any family members in the US, who would have had roots in the Hudson County area, especially Jersey City and Bayone. Prominent surnames from marriages are: DiNicola, Ricci, Mollica, Fea, Arnone, Bozza, Chiconne and DiGeronimo.

Jerry,
I was born in Jersey City, the oldest of three children born to Rocco and Joan DiNicola. My younger brothers are Robert and Joseph. My father is deceased, but my mother is still living. Rocco was born in Santomenna, Italy, the second of eight children born to Frank and Ann Marie(DiGeronimo) DiNicola. His older sister, now deceased, was Mae. His younger siblings are Mary, Anne, Louie, Anna and the twins, Jeannie and Frank. Louie is deceased, but the others are still living. The first four children were born in Italy, and the others were born in Jersey City after the family emigrated to the United States in 1923.
My aunt Mae married another DiGeronomo, Phil, and they had five children. Phil is still living. Their children are Theresa, Edward, Evelyn, Diane and Beverly. According to my mother, Phil's siblings are Frank, Mary, Anna and John. Also, Phil's parents were Giseppie and Maria Giseppie - of course, from Santomenna.
That's about all I have found out so far about the DiNicola and DiGeronomo family
background. I really don't know how the two families are connected with the Calabrese family. The only thing my mother could remember was that a girl named Marie Calabrese was the maid of honor at my aunt Anne's wedding to Frank Stirlacci. Frank, by the way, is my godfather.
I hope this is of help to you. As I am new to this kind of research, I would be grateful for any information that you may have on my family.
Sincerely,
Bill DiNicola

I got your message and have some info on the DiNicola family. In fact, my grandmother, Grazia, born in 1873, in Santomenna, was a DiNicola. She had two sisters, one of whom married a Digeronimo and four of their grandchildren still live in Santomenna. I will write more later. Am visiting my dad, who was also born in Santomenna and is now 84. Will get as much info as I can and get back to you. By the way, where do you live now and how old are you? Where did your family live in Jersey City? Jerry Calabrese

Ok, here is what I know about my Calabrese family connection to the DiNicola and DiGeronimo families.

My father is Gerard Calabrese. He is 84 and was born in Santomenna. His father, Saverio Calabrese began coming to the US in the late 1880's and went back and forth until finally staying here in 1928.

My grandmother was Grazia DiNicola, born in 1873. Her parents were Natale DiNicola and Anna Maria Piserchia and she had twin sisters, Caterina and Angela Maria who were a couple of years younger.

Her father had one brother, Francesco who had four girl chidren, one or more of whom came to the US in the 1920's.

Her sister Angela Maria married Vito DiGeronimo and had two children, Felice and another boy who died around 1927 and whose name I don't have. Angela Maria died around 1927 and her husband, Vito, died shortly after WWII.

Their son, Felice DiGeronimo lived his whole life in Santomenna and died there in 1981 at the age of 76 or 77. With his wife Rosa who only died a few years ago, he had seven children. Four of them live in Santomenna:Felice, Rocco, Girardina and Maria Giuseppe. Two more live in Switzerland, Vito and another whose name I forget and one, Francesco, lives in Switzerland.

I have been to Santomenna three times and they have an amazing records department that has enabled me to get records dating back to the mid 1700's. I also understand that there is a society in Jersey City that is based around the Holy Rosary Church that involves a lot of people from Santomenna and can also be of help in making connections.

Finally, my Calabrese family members lived on Cole Street, Brunswich Street, Fifth Street,Pavonia Avenue and Railroad Avenue to name a few places.

I live in Montclair and work in NYC and would be happy to help you find out more if you would like. Regards, Jerry Calabrese

Jerry,
Thanks so much for the information. My
daughter is actually the one who was originally very interested in our ancestry, but now I have found it fascinating as well. I hope to go to Italy next year on
vacation, and perhaps visit Santomenna and Salerno. My mother's side of the family (surname Andriola) comes from Salerno.
When I was born in 1942, my family lived on Wayne Street, actually very close to Railroad Avenue, and subsequently we moved to Linden Avenue, near Bayonne. We lived on Wayne Street until I was eight years old, and I attended St. Bridget's. Initially we lived in a two-family house with my grandparents, who later moved to Cambridge Avenue. All of the DiNicola relatives then lived in the Heights section, except for our family, until most of those still living moved out of the city.
I moved away from Jersey City when I left for college, and have only returned occasionally. I have lived in Boston and the Washington, D.C. area before moving to California, and have been living with my family in Bakersfield, CA. since 1975. My
mother also lives here, and my brothers live in Texas and Oregon.
Thank you so much for sharing the information, and whatever you think is of interest would be most appreciated. If you
wish, you can E-Mail me at Devildog6068@aol.com.

Please tell your daughter to feel free to contact me if she wants more info about the parts of the DiNicola and DiGeronimo families that I know about. Santomenna is a very small town and it is certain that our family trees intersect at some point. There is, for example,a Margherita DiGeronimo who was my great, great, great, great grandmother and lived in the mid to late 1700's. Again, the records available in the town are amazing considering its rural nature. Ask your mother is she remembers any of your father's relatives named Bozza.

My own family moved away from Jersey City in 1956, when I was 8, though a lot of my extended family stayed longer. I live in Montclair, NJ, and I have a brother Joseph who lives in LA. Good luck with your family search and let me know if I can help. Regards, Jerry Calabrese

I'm very interested in the commune of Santomenna. My great-grandfather, Felice Manziano, was from there.

Hi Jerry
While searching for someone from Santomenna, came across your last name. My 3rd grt. grand
father was a Vito Turi born in late 1700s and
I am looking to get his wife's name, no luck w the Stato di Famiglia from the town. But I
do know according to the Stato she remarried
to a Vito Calabrese. Since you have info of the Calabrese family back into the 1700s I wonder if their was a Vito in your info and
would like to get who he married. Also I saw
the name DiGeronimo mentioned. Well Vito Turi
had a grandaughter Maria Vita Turi born Jan 23,1852 married to a Pietro DiGeronimo on Apr
18, 1874. I would like to hear any info I can get.MY family came from Jersey City also. Thanks again.
Pat Turi

My son found this site & emailed it to me. I hope I'm responding to the right person.
My mother is Filomena DiGeronimo, born in Jersey City 1913. Family came from Castile Nueva (not sure of spelling)a year or two before she was born. Her mother was a DiFilippo. Siblings are Frank, Joe, Mike, Rose and Angela Maria (family names)..From what I understand there was a cousin Rocco who was a priest in Salerno. Funny coincidence, when I was a child living on Pavonia Avenue (between Brunsick & Monmouth) our next door neighbors were Calabrese. I printed out message 23 & 25 to show Mom. She's 88 years old but has an excellent memory. Let me know if I can be of any help.
