Hello, fellow Cakes. I'm looking for information about a Cake family, some of whom were of Deerfield, Cumberland Co., NJ. The oldest I have is David Cake (1755-1826) married to Margaret Unknown. They had at least five children between 1775 and about 1785, all born in Deerfield. They were Presbyterians. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

David Cake /Gack,/ Kake was married to Margaret SAUL b. abt 1775 Salem NJ d. Abt 1784 Cumberland, NJ.

David Cake's father I think is J. Adam Cake/gack/kake b. 1721 Germany d 1776 Philadelphia PA. Still looking at this one.

David and Margaret had a daughter Margaret Cake Shull.

Finding all this out now, but I hope it helps. I'm of the CAKE/HITCHNER LINE

The original spelling of this surname was GÖCH and they were Catholic. The name spelling evolved to CAKE for some branches of this family.

My Salem County GEIGER family has a Christina GEIGER who married Laurence GOCK on 28 Apr. 1767.

I have his descendants as buried in a Presbyterian Cemetery. So Germany?

I am also a Jersey Mickel descendant married into the Hitchners/Ichners/etc. at various points.

Nate.

The GOCHs were originally either from Germany or Alsace, France (of Germanic heritage). They may well have been associated with the glassmaking community in Salem County as the GEIGER/KIGER family was. Christina KIGER married Lawrence GOCH and she was the daughter of John Adam KIGER and wife Agnes (maiden name not known). These records can be found in the Old St. Joseph's RC Catholic Church records Philadelphia. The Priest from Old St. Joseph's would come over the KIGER house in Salem County and perform Catholic ceremonies several times a year prior to the Revolution when it was illegal to be Catholic in NJ.

You will find that many of these family left the Catholic faith at some point but some of the CAKEs I know remained Catholic. it isn't surprising to find them in a Presbyterian cemetery.

I have also seen an early spelling for the HITCHNER surname of: UETZNER. So consider all spellings. I have HITCHNERs by marriage in my tree as well...my grandmother KIGER's sister married a HITCHNER as her second husband.
