I just came across this post and a similar one on the Celtic Connections website today (which gives more info on your Cahill ancestors) - My mother is Cahill from Annaghdown and I'm trying to trace back my own family history. I was in the parochial house in Corrandulla (Annaghdown) earlier this week as I live close by and I have some digital images of baptismal and marriage records that may help give more details on the James Cahill and Ellen Ford you mention.
1) James Ford and Mary Cahill christened a daughter Eleanor on 22nd April 1838. I believe this is the same Ellen you mention.
2) They also christened a daughter Mary on 13th August 1835.
3) They also christened a son Michael on 8th Sept 1839.
4) They may also have christened a daughter Cicily on 10th Dec 1841 - The record did not give Mary's surname.
5) The records started in 1834, so there may have been other children prior to 1834.
6) I can't see any record for the christening of a James Cahill born to Thomas Cahill and Bridget Feeney - but there's a good chance he was born before 1834 – before records started in the parish.
7) James Cahill and Ellen Ford christened a son James (not Thomas) on 10th Feb 1861. There are no other records of any of their children christened at Annaghdown.
8) I can’t find a marriage record for James Cahill and Ellen Ford – but the marriage records are (badly) hand written and difficult to read.
I hope this helps.

I believe John J Cahill in your post may be my grandfather. He ran a construction/contracting company with his name and had sons John and David and 5 or 6 daughters, including Cecilia, Mary, Sister John Gabriel S.C. and ... Now I can't remember - have to look it up.

John Sr. had a younger sister we knew as Aunt Lizzie who ran a tavern out toward Raytown area. He and 7-8 sibs came to the USA after their father died falling from a wagon in Ireland 1986.

I was born in KC,MO 1945 to John J Cahill Jr. and Dorothy - my sisters are Patricia and Kathleen. jjcahill3@gmail.com

Cahill Family / Castleisland, Ireland to Massachusetts

I have the following information on my immediate Cahill family and I am searching for Cahill relatives and/or information:

My mother is Mary Virginia Cahill and she was born in 1932

Her father was John Joseph Cahill (my grandfather), he came to the United States with his parents and siblings and settled in the Monson/ Springfield, Ma area in the early 1900's. He worked in the granite business and made many area gravestones.

My grandfather (John) is the son of Dennis Cahill and Mary (Connell) Cahill

My grandfather had the following known siblings:

Michael Cahill (Married to Dora)
James Cahill (married to Katherine / Kate)
Daniel Cahill
Cornelius Cahill
Dennis Cahill
William Cahill (married to Gwendolyn)
Patrick Cahill (married to Margaret)

My grandfather and some of his siblings were born in Castleisland, Ireland. The younger siblings were born in the USA. I have heard unconfirmed reports that there might have been a sister or two.

I know that my grandfather was married to Agnes Marshall prior to getting married to my grandmother, Anna Peduzzi. My grandparents, John and Anna, only had one child, my mother, Mary. I do know that my grandfather did have one daughter from his first marriage to Agnes and her name was Mona Cahill. I did hear many years ago that she had settled in the Conn. area and passed away after being married for a time.

Any information on this family would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim Spain
Cahills from Co Cork to Bronx NY 1920s

Hi - I am searching for any descendants of Timothy Cahill and Ellen Navin from Mitchelstown. At least 7 of their 16 children emigrated to the Bronx, NY in mid to late 1920s (John, Ellen, Mary, Patrick, Daniel, Michael and Bridget) All born between 1895 and 1911. Recently obtained naturalization papers for Patrick Cahill who married Ellen Casey. Three children John (1933), Richard (1935) and Maria (1937) Of course the descendants have probably relocated to other areas.

In a reversal of the "usual" these descendants have an Irish cousin in Wicklow who would like to find out more information and share the Irish side of the family who remained in Ireland with them Thanks so much!

I can't believe that the government does not provide you more info and help! There must be draft info. I found those names on the 1930 census. A shot in the dark but poss. clue. The Couple I mentioned were from Illinois, Moultre, Aurthur Village. They seemed to be the right age to have a son who would be in that era

POW/MIA Korean War, CAHILL

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. His remains were never recovered. Our government has no family contact at this time for this soldier

Soldier: CHESTER CAHILL
Born: 1929
Date of loss: Jan. 12, 1952 KIA
Home of Record: Los Angeles, Calif

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (79years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Re: Cahill/Cahall..one name or two clans?

Surname: Cahill
This is an anglicized form of the Olde Gaelic name O Cathail. The Gaelic prefix 'O' indicates 'male descendant of' plus the personal name Cathal, a compound of the Celtic elements 'catu-valus' meaning 'battle powerful'. In Ireland, the name is first recorded in the early half of the 10th century (see below). The principal sept of the O'Cahills belonged to Co. Galway but by the early 13th century their place had been taken by the O' Shaughnessys. Today the name is chiefly found in the Munster counties of Clare, Tipperary, Cork and Kerry. Three townlands called Ballycahill exist in Co. Tipperary. The first element comes from 'baile', a town. Father Daniel Cahill (1796-1864), was a schoolmaster and newspaper editor. He lectured extensively in the United States. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Flan O' Cahill, martyred. which was dated 938 Ancient Irish Records. during the reign of Siol Chuinn, descendants of Conn of the Hundred Battles. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling
My grandmother was a Cahill and she pronounced the name a CARL, hence we grew up thinking our grandad Cahill was called CARL!!!

Hello Ashley,

I believe we are cousins? My grandfather is Edward Cahill from Hartford, CT and I do know he had a son from an affair (your father). I've heard that my Uncle Murph (Ed) met your father; however, nothing ever became of that. My father (Bill) passed away last night and I am trying to locate Murph, Karen (their sister) and Dick (another half-brother) to notify them of my father's death.

I live in New York now and I would be more then happy to provide any information you are missing. I was very close to my grandparents growing up in the Hartford area. I did not know of your father until just about 3 years ago.

Please respond if you wish to discuss further.

Here is mention of the James Cahill line of Cahill family prior to the move to Australia line...the name of James is carried all through and down throughout generations of my family line. James Cahill was my uncle; James Cahill was my grandad; James Cahill was also my great grandad and so on; see how the name is constantly placed into this family bloodline? I hope this is usefull and we can find more out about James Cahill and Thomas Cahill who was around the eighteen hundreds a well decorated officer in the forces.
