Surnames: Cahall
I am a Cahall from a small town in Ohio, where Cahalls are a prominent family. I actually have a complete history book of my blood line, it was given to my father by his friend who happened to be a geneologist.

O'Cahills are from Munster, Ireland. A Cahill came over in the mid 1700's. James Cahill was born in Maryland in 1749 and reportedly changed his name to CAHALL due to a clerical error. He could not write or spell and his name was spelled wrong on a land grant, to which he made his mark. From that moment on the Cahall's were born because he supposedly 'he'd be damned if he'd loose his land becasue of a single letter mistake.' He then went on to have eight children and is buried in Southern Ohio near my town. Hope this helps, any questions let me know....

I have no records of any of these people, I will give you dates and information I have.

Though it is stated as a "Family tradition" the story of James Cahall Sr. changing his name from Cahill to Cahall does not match up with some of your info. Was Edward Cahall, perhaps Cahill? My records state that there is no evidence that he did indeed indentify himself as Cahill before the clerical error, however, there are no records of his parents and from him begins a long traceable line of Cahalls.

He was born in 1749 in Queen Ann's County, MD. He married Ellender Lyon in 1768. Based upon the dates Edward and James could have been brothers. However, the Cahill/Cahall thing is throwing me off.

I hope this is some way was helpful, I was really hoping I would find something more!

Take Care,
Kristine Cahall

I don't know if I mentioned it but I have am Maryland militia roster from 1732-1763 with both James and Edward on it as part of Captain Henry Cassons company. If Edward was born in Ireland in 1750 as I have info.to attest then he would be 13 yrs old in 1763. Something is wrong somewhere. They are both listed as Cahall's.
Another interesting thing is Edwards grandson Barney married Eleanor Hall, daughter of Sebord and Mary Hall. Sebord was born in Maryland in 1753. Maybe some family migration. On the 1850 census for Henry Co. VA the Halls, McDaniels, Cahalls and Batemans all inter married and lived side by side.
Keep the info. coming, I am fascinated with this line of the family.
Be well,
Chris

Ok so according to the records I have James entered the Army as a volunteer in May of 1777 under Captain Fiddeman of Col. Richardson's 5th Maryland Regiment. He received a written discharge and then re-enlisted December of 1777 under Captain Hawkins.

The Census of 1850 would more than likely not have him or his children. His oldest son was born in 1790 in PA and James himself died in 1851 in my home county in southern Ohio.

The info I have of his service comes from a court case in which James sued for pension because he wrongly was denied post war benefits, this record indeed solidifies the fact that he was born in 1749 in Maryland.

I just posted today my blood line starting with James and listing children and spouses along the way.

There is an Edmund O'Cahill from Londonderry Ireland born 1697. I haven't investigated when he came to the colonies. He died 3/21/1742 in Queen Ann Maryland. His son was James and James's son was James who fought in the American Revolution as a private. He may have been at Valley Forge or at Yorktown, that needs clarification. The Cahill, Cahall is confusing.

Looking for info on Sarah Cahall who married William S. Steele(b@1850) in DE, after his death she married a Comegys and moved to Queen Anne's MD.
Sarah was William's second wife, their son William O. Steele is my ancestor(late 1880's).
