The name Cahalane is centred around the South West of Ireland. I believe that in some cases it was transformed into Callaghan by the immigration officials. For info my grandfather was a Cahalane from around Drimoleague in Co Cork

my g.grandfather was john cahalane from leap - born 1964 - came to the states in i think the 1880's. his name was changed from cahalane to callahan on arrival in the states. i understand there are some family connections in drimoleague, but not specific re: how. please contact me if you would like to share info re: names, etc. it's been very difficult finding american relations because of the name change.

thanks!

My maternal grandfather was John Cahalane, born in Skibbereen, Co. Cork, in 1884. His father, Cornelius, was born in Maultrahane, Leap, Co. Cork (Parish of Kilmacabea) about 1834. It is possible that Bridget is a niece of Cornelius since he does not appear to have a sister by that name. The surname is uncommon and my branch of the family has been in Maultrahane since c. 1602.

My grandfather was also John Cahalane. He was born in Skibbereen in 1883 and died in Chelsea, Mass., in 1946. His father was Cornelius Cahalane, born at Maultrahane, Leap, about 1834, the son of James Cahalane and Mary O'Sullivan. There were the following children in that family: James (inherited the farm in Maultrahane and married an O'Driscoll); Catherine (emigrated to Chelsea and married a Sullivan); "Pepper" (no one seems certain of her "real" name); Cornelius (a shoemaker, my great-grandfather); Margaret (married Jeremiah Whooley of Shreelane, Leap). There are Cahalane and Whooley relations in Drimoleague -- one of them, Diarmuid Whooley, retired pricipal teacher in Drimoleague, died last month at 86. I have just returned from Skibbereen.

I do not know of any Denis Cahalane, but that doesn't mean one did not exist. My grandfather had a sister Kate whose husband was Denis McLean and a first cousin Margaret whose husband was Denis Minihane, but that's it as far as I know.
