I have a feeling that there is a connection to my GT,GT grandfather here! His name was James Cahalane he married Ann Driscoll and then he emigrated to Newport, South Wales, UK sometime between 1860 & 1871 as he is on the 1871 census. The census records that James was born in Kilmacabea, Cork.
They had the following children Ann, James, Cornelius, Helena, Honora, Barbara. The history that we have is that James was a farmers son but we dont know why he emigrated to South Wales when he did. Please let me know if this could tie up!

Hi Liam--
I'm just seeing your response to my query now...
My William Herlihy was born probably around 1810 or before, and would be a father to the Patrick I have.
The couple I have for Patrick Herlihy and Cate Cahalane were both born around 1830.
My William had a sister Cate who married a Cornelius Cahalane as well.
The names kept repeating with each generation and with different branches of the family, so it can get confusing trying to figure out how everyone is connected. It looks like the Herlihys and Cahalanes had a few matches.
Thanks,
Christine
