Wow, My Great Grandfather never told anyone his
his half brother was in the Union Army during the
civil war. He did tell about hearing
fighting close to the house and the women
and children (himself included)hiding in the
barn. I'm not absolutley sure about the 2
James Cahalans being 1/2 brothers, they might
have been uncle nephew close to the same age.
My grandfather, William Cahalan seemed to be
confused a bit about it. Evidentally both the
James didn't have much to say about their past.
But, since both were living in Southern Missouri
at the time, that may have been because of the
Union Army tie-in. Confederate sympathies all.
My g Grandfather James Moved to Pierce City
after a few years stint in Dodge City, KS.
Then came back to MO where he met his wife,
(a Moody) in Butler, MO (We have often wondered
if Deepwater's close proximity to Butler
the fact that the other James ended up there
had any relation.) Then he bought a farm outside
of Pierce City, MO. (just off 60 HWY now) eventually bought
600 acres.
The other James liked the idea and moved down some
10-20 years later. The 2 were said to be close
and did not like the idea of becoming shopkeepers
like the rest of the family.
Would love to talk more with you.
My bother does have pictures of the James in
Deepwater.
Drop me a line, or if anyone has anything to
add, let me know. The things I have said here
all come from William Henry Cahalan, born 2/16/01-
died 8/26/76, Butler, MO.
