Johanna Cahalan-Fleming, daughter of Daniel Cahalan and Marinne Phelan, and grand-daughter to James Cahalan (he is Daniel's father)...any information on this family?
Johanna married Thomas Francis Fleming and lived ( died maybe?) in Iowa - Mason City area). Johanna was born in the late 1800's.

James Cahalan came to America in 1849. Lived with family near Cincinnati, Ohio. Moved to Iowa in 1854. Moved to Edina, Missouri during Civil War,served union army and was wounded. Living in Deepwater, Mo in 1904. Might be grandfather to Johanna.

Wow, My Great Grandfather never told anyone his
his half brother was in the Union Army during the
civil war. He did tell about hearing
fighting close to the house and the women
and children (himself included)hiding in the
barn. I'm not absolutley sure about the 2
James Cahalans being 1/2 brothers, they might
have been uncle nephew close to the same age.
My grandfather, William Cahalan seemed to be
confused a bit about it. Evidentally both the
James didn't have much to say about their past.
But, since both were living in Southern Missouri
at the time, that may have been because of the
Union Army tie-in. Confederate sympathies all.

My g Grandfather James Moved to Pierce City
after a few years stint in Dodge City, KS.

Then came back to MO where he met his wife,
(a Moody) in Butler, MO (We have often wondered
if Deepwater's close proximity to Butler
the fact that the other James ended up there
had any relation.) Then he bought a farm outside
of Pierce City, MO. (just off 60 HWY now) eventually bought
600 acres.

The other James liked the idea and moved down some
10-20 years later. The 2 were said to be close
and did not like the idea of becoming shopkeepers
like the rest of the family.

Would love to talk more with you.

My bother does have pictures of the James in
Deepwater.

Drop me a line, or if anyone has anything to
add, let me know. The things I have said here
all come from William Henry Cahalan, born 2/16/01-
died 8/26/76, Butler, MO.

My great great grandfather Patrick Cahalan married Ann Freil February 19, 1860. They had a son Patrick Augustine who married Elizabeth Witherow (daughter of John Witherow and Ellen Fitzgerald). I am trying to trace parents and siblings. Do you have any other information? Thanks for any.

Yes, we are cousins! Patrick was brother to my
g g grandfather William. Patrick is supposed to
have passed away of pneumonia in KY during the
war for state's rights in the 1860's. The story
goes that he never met his son Patrick who was
born shortly after Patrick Sr. left with the
Federal Infantry regiment he'd joined. I have
seen a an official military record online of
Patrick Sr.'s death, & am sure I book marked it,
but can't seem to find it right now.
His commanding officer referred to the cause of
death as "sickness of the chest" if memory serves.
I would love to chat further with you.

I believe this person's grave is in Montrose, MO. (Near Clinton, MO) As is the grave of his daughter Catherine. His wife's name is Sarah. He died in 1913, and on the stone it states that he came from Rosc(something) Co. Ireland. I am typing this from memory and don't recall the exact spelling of the name of the place. On the stone was something about 1854 as well.

If you would like, we could get photos.

Hate to throw a monkey wrench into this thread. James was my gggrandfather, left Co. Kerry in 1847. Daniel, the oldest, joined his father in 1850, along with the rest of the family. Daniel married Mary Ann Phelan in Clayton Co, on 2-5-1868. Their third child, Ann in my records, married Thomas Fleming, and had 4 children - Mildred, Francis, Paul, and Peggy. Daniel and Mary Ann are buried in Mason City.
