I'm just getting started at this,
sorry for my lack of knowledge.
My Great Grandfather was James Cahalan
was born in the late 1850's
(confilcting years in existing records)
in or around Edina, MO. He died in Pierce City, MO
in the late 20's or early 30's. He had a
half brother also named James Cahalan
who also lived for awhile in both towns.

Also, Don Cahalan of Kansas City, MO His
Son, Tim D. Cahalan are descendants of one of the
James' brothers.

My Great Grandfather James Married a Moody
whom he met in Butler, MO.

All the Cahalans in Barry, Lawrence, Vernon
Counties in Mo are Descended from them.

The other James seems to have relatives in
St. Clair Henry Counties of MO.

Anyone else researching this line?

Anyone need to know any info I might have
for the history after the civil war on
my ancestors?

Would be pleased to hear from you.

Thanks, Happy New Year!

My great great grandfather was Patrick Cahalan, married Feb 19, 1860 to Ann Friel. They had a son, Patrick Augustine Cahalan who married Elizabeth Witherow Jan 30, 1890. I have no information on the family. Do we have a tie-in somewhere...probably since it is in the same vicinity. Would appreciate any information you have.

Hi Tim,

I think I am related to the brother of the half brother, James. My GG Grandfather was Thomas D. Cahalan, who had a brother named James. Thomas had a son born in Edina, MO, named Emmett Lee Cahalan.

I don't think I have any info you need directly for your searching, but just a point of interest.

Oh yes! Tom was definitely My GGrandfather's little brother. Tom fought for the CSA. Then he was captured near Lexington, MO by the Yankees. They let him go since his brothers were all in the Union Army. But he had to promise to go out west. Went to Idaho, didn't he?

Hi Tim! Good to hear from you again! Yes, Tom did go out west to Idaho and put down roots there. His first born son, Emmett Lee, was my great-grandfather (this is all on my maternal side). I wondered why he was the only Cahalan to move out west, now I know!

Also, about your other reply, it's nice to know how they came to America - I wasn't sure of the route they took.

Do you have any info on the parents of Thomas and James? I haven't been able to crack that (but then again, I haven't put in a lot of time on this in many years either!)

Thanks
Gretchen

Yes, I do. I'll have to look for it. I know James & Tom's father married a new wife in Edina and had a new set of kids. One of which was named James again. The younger James was friends with the older James (my GGrandfather) and the younger James moved to Deepwater, MO. There are still some Cahalans there too. Also, wasn't Tom like Idaho's first Attorney General or something? I was thinking that he helped establish the state of Idaho? Also, yes there are other Cahalans who moved out west. Their local patriarch was named Bob. He lived on that big golf course on the Monterey Peninsula. His father was an architect who designed some of San Fransisco and San Jose. One of the Largest Parks and one of the Boulevards in San Jose is named Cahalan. The big mystery is how we are related to that branch. I've been to Bob's house and seen photos of his kids. There is a striking family resemblance. The other thing is that they settled in Southern Iowa first and we settled in northern Mo first. Our families only lived about 30 miles apart. Most of the others posting on here are from the IA group. But, no one seems to be able to figure out how exactly we are related. That's really the mystery I'd like to solve. :)

Wow! And the plot thickens!! ;-)

Thomas was the DA for the area - and the Post Master General, and the Sheriff and a farmer! He also ran for the Senate, but lost to George Ainslee by one vote! I'd be happy to send you the info I have. I just have to put it all together in a document I can email you.

Emmett, ID is named for his first born son (my GG).

I think the first wife of Thomas lived with who may have been a younger brother named Patrick in Edina. I remember seeing a census with his name, his wife's (Anna??) and a Winifred who was much older than he or his wife. I wonder why they divorced?

So much to unravel!

My email is mom2fourboys@sbcglobal.net if you'd rather email me directly (hope the email shows up).
