I'm looking for anything on Margaret(Margherita) Caggiano, born to Michael(Michele) and Maria Teresa C. in Salerno, Italy around 1893-1894. She may have married a Ceccarone/Cecearone first, then Michael (Michele) Costa, moved to NY, and finally married Vincent Iorio. Thanks!

I have since learned that Margaret's maiden name was Ciccarone. Her father was Anthony Ciccarone and mother was Mary (Maria Teresa) Caggiano. There is a connection to a Michael Caggiano, however, as he was Margaret's son Anthony Costa's godfather. An uncle or cousin maybe? Please let me know what you found out, as the Salerno connection is encouraging!

My grandmother was Maria Donato Caggiano Nigro. She was born in San Fele which is in the "County" of Potenza in Basilicata, Italy.

I am trying to find out when she and my Grandfather Francesco Nigro arrived in New York.

Paula,

My wife's grandfather, DONATO FRANCESCO CAGGIANO, born 18 May 1869 or 1870, in Picerno, Basilicata, Italy. His father was ANTONIO CAGGIANO born about 1844, and his father was FELICE CAGGIANO. DONATO's mother, name unknown, was born about 1843. Her mother was ANTONIA TARULLO, daughter of CARLO TARULLO. DONATO arrived in NYC on 24 Jun 1891. He was not traveling with anyone else named CAGGIANO. He lived his entire life in the area of 116th to 119th in upper Manhattan.

I have not seen your grandmother's name in any of our documents but they must be some kind of cousin. I located the ship that he came over by checking an index of 6 or 7 volumes called "Italians to America" by FILBY I think. That gave me the date and the ship's name. I went to the National Archives in Washinton and found his name on the passenger list and made a copy.

Lorey,

Do you have any further info about where your Donato immigrated from? I noticed in the "Italians to America" indexes that there were several Donato's. Fortunatley I was able to determine that my Donato was born in Picerno, Basilicata, Italy which is southeast of Naples. There is also a small town named "Caggiano" near there. If you want to exchange further info you can contact me direct at lhbagley@yahoo.com.

Thank you for your reply.
Most of the records that my father's family kept have been lost. (we are still looking)
I know that she was born in San Fele in 1880.
She came to Ellis Island in the early 1900s then settled in Buffalo NY. Her first son, my Uncle Antonio Nigro was born in San Fele, Basilicata in 1903. So,I am searching through any 1903/4 to 1910 ship records I can find on the Net.
It sounds like our relatives were probably as you said, cousins. On the birth certificate of my father Vicenzo my Grandmothers name is spelled Maria, but supposedly her real name is Mari, without the a.
