Kate Hunter was my great-grandmother too. She wasn't actually African American. Apparently, she was multi-racial (South Asian (Indian), Cherokee, Irish and French), but not black. She lived with an African American man, though she had her children with the man I think you're referring to as "Wall" Cage. My grandmother (Myrtle) was the only daughter of Kate and William Claiborne Cage. She said he was known as "Captain Willie Cage" though his name was Claiborne. His sister told my aunt Kate Hunter's racial background.

William Claiborne Cage was my great-grandfather. He fathered and financially supported 4 children with a multi-racial woman named Kate Hunter (one of these was my grandmother), before marrying a white woman who later evicted this earlier family from the home he provided for them. If you're still responding to this post, I would love to know more about what you know about Claiborne Cage.

Hi there-

These two below are my gr. gr. gr. grandparents:

4) William Cage Jr. (29 Jun 1774 - 12 Aug 1836)(son of Major William Cage)
& Frances "Fannie" Street (ca 1784 - 3 Feb 1875)m. 12 Mar 1806, Sumner Co. TN

I show that one of their sons is named
George Washington Cage (ca. 1800-1827)

I don't have any information as to whether this GW Cage, the one born around 1800, had children or not, but if he did, perhaps he is an ancestor of the George Washington Cage you are looking for? Maybe yours is a grandson or great grandson...

Thanks so much for all this information!

I am the gr. gr. gr. gr. grandaughter of Major William Cage,
by way of his son, William Cage, Jr. and Frances 'Fanny' Street, and their daughter Susan Cage.

I've recently gotten a photo of Fanny Street Cage as an old woman, and also a copy of the marriage certificate of Fanny & William. Several times I have seen the year of their marriage given as 1800, but it certainly seems to be 1806 on the certificate.

Question about Major William Cage's children

I am Clay Cage from Indianapolis. I'm tracing my ancestors back and it appears the only information I can find of Andrew Marion Cage Sr. (direct desendant) through ancestry.com is that he may be the eldest son of Major William Cage (found on multiple family trees). All the information I've found about William refutes this. Has anyone read seen anything about this gentleman through their research? I'm stumped.
