My great-great grandmother, Elizabeth Cagan, married Francis Mullen in Mineral Point WI in 1851. Does anyone know where the Cagans are from? Census records indicate she was Irish and immigrated through New York. There are so many varients of the spelling for Cagan. I can't locate her parents and have no clue where to find them. I would love to find out more about her. I noticed on the Wisconsin Census records that there was a Joseph, Catherine and another Elizabeth Cagan in Wisconsin between 1840 and 1905.

My g,g-grandmother, Eliz. Cagan/Caghan came from Pennsylvania, according to the death cert. of her daughter, Anna Twyman Bland. E. Cagan married John Fischer/Fisher, both from PA. His occupation was listed in the 1870 census as coppersmith. Their daughter Rebecca was born in PA. Their dau. Anna was born in Louisville, KY. I couldn't read the name on the D.C. very well. I am guessing at the "h". Might we have a connection?

Dear Annie,
I wish very much we had a connection, but I don't think we do. My Elizabeth Cagan came from New York and settled in Wisconsin and married Francis Mullen. They were divorced in 1880, and she disappeared. I am anxious to find her and any other members of this Mullen family that scattered after the divorce, but so far have been unsuccessful.

Hi,

I am decended from the Cagan family of Dolne Vestonice, Slovakia. My paternal grandmoter was born in 1900, as a Caganova. One of her nieces, or only neice, one of my late father's cousin, married a Jewish man. As I understand, the Cagan family of Donlne Vestonice, in Western Slovakia, near Previdza, and Nitra, are Catholic, but I have since learnt, that the surname Cagan, is of Jewish origin, and now I have learnt that it also has French origins.

The Cagan's I'm researching are Irish. It's a variant of Keegan and Cogan. They are from Cork, Ireland.

Annie after reading this board I belive our Elizabeth Cagan is French. My Great grandmother Ida Lee Fisher refers to her french grandmother in her cookbook. I hope you still are on your quest and that we can get in contact. Ida

My husband is a Cagan whose Great-Grandparents came from Russia. The name was Caganovich. When they arrived and went through immigration the name was changed to Cohen. However one of the brothers changed it back to a form of Caganovich to Cagan somtime around 1890's. They are/were Jewish.
