Gifford did go to Canada - see below
travel:
BYSOUTH Gifford Thos 1891 M 1912 Bristol Canada Halifax

Signed up to the Canadian Over-seas Expeditionary Forces
14 Dec 1915 188th Bn

Fought at Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele in WW1 - suffered poisonous gas injury.

BYSOUTH Male
Event(s): Birth: 1921 Marshall, Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan
Christening: Death: 1921
Parents: Father: GIFFORD THOMAS BYSOUTH
Mother: ROSA ANNIE DAVIES

Extract off web:
My name is Chloe Nottingham and when I was given this project I asked my Great Nana if she had any stories about the war that she could share with me. She had 2 important people in her life that fought in World War I and World War II.
The first was her father, Thomas Bysouth, my Great Great grandfather. He served in the army in World War 1 as a Canadian Soldier. He had recently moved from England to Canada when the war broke out. He fought at Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele, 2 of the most important battlefields in WW1 He fought in the trenches so the advancing enemy could not see them. When it rained the army got caught up in the mud, it was wet and cold and many soldiers fell sick. The German enemy sent over poisonous gases which affected the soldiers lungs so, they could not breathe. My Great Great grandfather was one of those injured by the poisonous gases. The second was her husband, my Great Grandfather, Leonard Brown who served in World War II for the Canadian Airforce. He was stationed in Gander, Newfoundland. If the enemy attacked by sea or air, the first place they would strike was Newfoundland. He was there to help protect this from happening. During his training in Trenton, Ontario, my Great Nana traveled with him and worked part-time making gun shells for the war. I also had 6 Great Uncles who served in World War II. One of them, Great Great Uncle Jim was hit by schrapnel as his landing craft tried to land in Dieppe, France. He lost his eye.
These are the stories from my family and how important it is to remember our family and others who fought for freedom. We remember all these brave men by wearing a poppy and re-telling the stories that are passed from generation to generation......To Never Forget.
Thank You
Chloe Nottingham (10)

Regards

Dennis

Hi Chris,

I'm a little confused. You say:

John BYSOUTH B. 1699 Reeds, Hertfordshire to Thomas BYSOUTH B. 1639 Reeds, Hertfordshire to Joseph BYSOUTH B. 1739 Barkway, Hertfordshire to Joseph BYSOUTH B. 1771

I'm assuming that Thomas Bysouth B. 1639 should read 1739, in which case what about Joseph? Is it a typo?

Also, who is

BYSOUTH B. 1836 Barkway, Hertfordshire ?

The reason I ask is that I can follow all the names down to Thomas Bysouth B. 1797, but cannot find any of his children born in 1836. My great-great grandfather, George Bysouth b. 1835 would have been a brother. I do have a Benjamin Bysouth B. 1837

Hi Anthony,

Gifford BYSOUTH B. 1890 Pinnocks Lane Baldock Hertfordshire. He was the son of John Head BYSOUTH B.1863 Barkway hertfordshire and Mary Ann CROUCH B. 1862. Gifford was my Grand father's cousin (Alfred Thomas BYSOUTH 1891 who emigrated to Melbourne, Australia after WW1 1921) I hqve a copy of that Gifford Bysouth's family tree, but it's not very detailed. Gifford BYSOUTH heralds from my ancestor Edward BYSOUTH 1580? of Reeds, Hertsfordshire. Any inforamtion on this side of teh family would be greatly accepted.

Cheers,

Chris

I don't know if you are still searching, but I married into the same family names. My husband's grandfather was Thomas Henry Bysouth, eldest son of Thomas William and Ellen Hallam. Tom H. and his brother Sam married two sisters, emigrated to Canada circa 1910. Tom remained a coal miner until he was forced into early 'retirement' by injury. He died and is buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Creston, BC (Kootenay area).
Thomas Henry married Ada Ellen Turner...they had one son, (Stanley) born 1905 in Notts, England. Stanley married Elise Hansen, and they had 2 children...Diane and Garry. Garry married Brenda (me).
We know that Thomas William Bysouth was born in Royston, Cambs in 1855...mother Harriett Bysouth (no father listed) in the Bassingbourne workhouse. He married Ellen Hallam in Belper, Derbyshire (??)...and he was a miner in the Notts area...Diane and I have been trying to research this family, but their history is very elusive.
I hope that you will contact: <bbysouth@kootenay.com>

And yes, we have some info on Ernest Bysouth

Hi Melanie,

I have quite a large database of Bysouths and I have a Walter William Bysouth (born 1860) but no details of his wife or children. His father was William Bysouth and his mother was Emma (nee Manning). He had two brothers, Frederick John (b. 1862) and Henry Albert (b. 1871) and five sisters, Rowletta Sarah (b. 1864) and Agnes (b. 1867), Theresa (b. 1867), Florence (b. 1873) and Ruth Margery (b. 1876). I have all Walter's ancestors right back to Edward (b. bef. 1548) and can let you have the family tree and a report, if you want. The entire family tree (extending to some 70-odd pages!) is yours if you'd like me to email it to you, or alternatively I can give you a cut-down version which would just be a direct descendancy without siblings. Let me know which you'd like.

Whereabouts do you live? Going by your email address, I'd imagine Australia. You have quite a few Bysouth cousins out there too!

I have a website: www.btinternet.com/~irene.robinson which gives a basic family tree. If you look it up, our common ancestor is Joseph and Mary (nee Dale) which makes you my 5th cousin once removed!

I'd be grateful if you could let me have your family tree connecting up to Walter William Bysouth then I can add it to my fast growing Bysouth database. (As long as you don't mind - I know some people are reluctant to give out personal details).

I did try to email you but my message bounced back.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Irene Robinson
She is Shirley Eileen Pickering daughter of Alfred Percy Pickering and Nellie Mortimer Bysouth who was born in Hertfordshire and was the daughter of Walter William Bysouth and Jane Mortimer Southwood. My nan has relations in Canada being Rene and Ron Bysouth (I think!). From the small amount of information I have as I'm just starting out on this journey I feel we must be related.

I would love to hear from you with any information you may have. I am in contact with quite a few world wide, including Australia and Canada, and am always interested in hearing of new family historians researching the family name. If you're a Bysouth, chances are your ancestors originated in Hertfordshire, England. I have (with help from other Bysouth historians) traced my family line back to the 1500's. I'd love to hear from other Bysouths.
