Hi, I am not sure if anyone has answered your question yet,but I will try my best here. One of the much older Byrne (s was added by my husband's grandfather who was born in 1886 & died in 1960) put this book together and one of the pages she did in 1991 says this:
The most ancient grant of a coat of arms found was:
red with a chevron between three hands.
The crest is:
A mermaid combing her hair.
The ancient family motto for this distinguished name is:
latin: Certavi Et Vici
Surely and Victory
Hope this helps and that it's correct. Amy Byrnes
Bossier City, LA

However, do you know whether there is a Patrick Burns born in 1822 in Ardee in County Louth who came to New Orleans in 1848 who is related to your Louth people?
Joan Schaefer

Our line descends from Joseph Kidder Batchelder and his wife Mattie Emeline Smith. She was the daughter of Henry Franklin Smith and his first wife, Sarah Mariah Powell. Joseph was the son of John Alfred Batchelder and wife Marie? who moved from Vermont to Illinois. The Batchelder line can be followed in the "Batchelder, Bacheller Genealogy" and "The Kidder Family descendants of Ensign James Kidder". John's father was Henry(7), Uzziel(6), Joseph(5), John(4), John(3), John(2), John(1). Joseph's sister, Anna, married Joel Byrnes. His second sister, Susan, married Andrew Bruce. Anna's family and Susan's family went to Kansas while Joseph and Mattie went to Nevada. Let me know if any of this fits or I can be of more help!

If you check the post from 2005 you'll see that the person who posted the information follows the line of Homer Byrnes, son of Joel and Anna; I don't have any more information on the rest of the family. I am a descendant of Anna (Batchelder) Byrnes' brother, Joseph Kidder Batchelder and his wife Mattie Smith. But I can try to help you with finding more info if you'd like; I'm trying to fill in all of the collateral lines. Good luck!

Hi,
Have you read the postings by tntgen123 posted in the last couple of days? They have much more information about that branch of the family than I have.
I am descended from James Bryan Byrnes, the second son of George W. Byrnes and Sabra Anna Hawkins. He was born
Dec. 16, 1847 in Kankakee County, Ill, married Lucy Lura Hammond on Apr 2, 1868 in Kankakee, they moved to Kansas and had 3 boys and one girl. Their first son, George Earl Byrnes was my grandfather, born in Kansas, married Mary Ellen Backus. They moved to the Northwest in 1899. They had 3 girls, my mother was their middle daughter, Ethel May Byrnes, born in Coweeman County, Washington in 1900.

George W. Byrnes, the father of Joel and James Bryan Byrnes was a pioneer settler of Kankakee County. He was the first (appointed sheriff) of the county. He was fairly well-to-do, for the time and had a large house in Limestone Township. I have a copy of an illustration of the house featured in the 1884 Atlas of Kankakee County. I also have a couple of pictures of George W. Byrnes, one picture of his family, including my great-grandfather James Bryan and his brother Joel Byrnes.

I have a photo of his son Homer as a boy. I've had it always, but wasn't sure who it was until I got the information from Terry Larson (tntgenealogy). He had a copy of the same photo. He also sent a couple of pictures of Joel and his wife Anna, and a picture of each of their sons, George and Duane.

If you'd like me to send you any of the photos, reply to my e-mail address: marsharoach@hotmail.com

I am at work right now, so can't access any of my research materials. But I did want to say that I have a picture of Homer Byrnes and wasn't certain who it was! I'm glad to know the names of Joel Byrnes' children.
I am a descendent of Joel Byrnes brother, James Bryan Byrnes. I'd be very interested in seeing any of the photos you have of Joel and his family. Besides the picture of Homer, I have a family group picture (from about 1870) of George W. Byrnes, his sons Joel and James Bryan, and 3 of Bryan's children, including my grandfather George Earl Byrnes. However, the image of Joel is not very clear.
I'll send you a further message later today.
Marsha Roach

Hi Rick,
I cannot help you with the names that you have listed but we may have a connection. I am in Australia following the line of the Byrnes Family.
The eldest ancestor is Garrett Byrnes born in c1801 Killkenny married Eleanor (maiden name unknown)I got her christian name from James'death certificate in 1904.
Garrett and Eleanor had a son James b1825 who emigrated to Australia in 1857 on sailingship Black Eagle; he was married to Anastasia Boland, Anastasia and their son Patrick followed James to Australia in 1857 on board the sailingship 'Conway'
I also found a Garret Byrne on Prince of the Seas in October 1861 arrival in Australia. There has been many name changes just within the three generations I have listed here, death and birth certs suggesting James illiterate, irish catholic and name changes of Byrne, Burns and Byrnes. I have the added problem of the next generation changing religions as well!
These extra names may help your research - I think we connect and would love to hear from you.
Warm Wishes Debbie

Hi Rick,
I was searching this website for Garret Byrnes and came across a Mary Cody - seeing as Cody is not a name seen very often perhaps this will be of some value to you - it is land ownership.
Hi Rick,
Thanks for the reply. I know it's a long shot but that is all I have for now. I have taken note of all your names and information - I will set about seeing if there is a connection. My biggest problem is the name changes over the years. The family name since about 1880 has been Byrnes but this has not always been the case - more likely to have been Byrne. The Burns spelling of the name is more likely to be Scottish spelling but you know how 'more likely' goes .....
If I find a link I will be the first to let you know. I am off to Ireland in July so am madly looking for links before I go. My Byrnes' landed in Melbourne rather than NSW and settled in Creswick Victoria then along the Murray at Murrabit and Swan Hill VIctoria also - but did spend many years in Eidsvold QLD.
Thanks Again Debbie

Hello,
I am working on the Batchelder/Smith line, and while searching for information on the sisters of my 3rd great grandfather, Joseph Kidder Batchelder, I came across this rootsweb posting from several years ago. You were searching for information on the descendants of Joel B. and Anna (Batchelder) Byrnes of Kansas. Anna Batchelder was the sister of Joseph Batchelder. I myself have only started trying to find them recently so do not have a whole lot of information but would be interested in sharing what I have with you.
Joel married Anna Batchelder (or Bachelder) in Kankakee County, Illinois, in October of 1868. They lived in Chase County, Dickinson County, and Chautauqua County Kansas. Joel died in August of 1896, and is buried in Grant Creek Cemetery, Chautauqua County, Kansas. His grave marker states that he was "murdered by a drunken assassin". I only have information for three sons; Homer, George and Duane. I have pictures of Joel and Anna, and their three sons.
Please let me know if you are interested in sharing information. I am not a descendant of Joel but I have been trying to add the collateral lines of my direct ancestors so would be interested in obtaining more information on his descendants.
Thanks!
I realize these are old postings but hope that they are still being read!

Debbie,

Its a long shot but I will give you a background account of what I know.

Patrick Dwyer and Bridget Byrne were bought out to Australia in their later years by their son William in 1868. Also accompanying them was Williams brother Denis and sister Catherine.

William and Anastasia immigrated in 1864 living in Bathurst then Albury and then Maitland as William was an Inspector of Schools.

William also bought his elder brother Timothy and his wife to Australia in 1858, Timothy was also a school teacher and was at the Fort Street School in Sydney.

In memoirs of William he stated that there were ten children in his family 4 including him were in Australia and that 6 had stayed behind in Ireland but none living from what we read into it.

We havent come across anything in regards to Byrne's family in our quest but Anastasia's sister and Husband my GGGgrandparents came to Australia in 1862.

We are still to find Anastasia and Maria's parents in Ireland which is a pain but will have just keep looking.

My tree is at gw.geneanet.org/coweyreidy if you are interested.

Rick

Debbie,

Forgot to tell you they the Dwyer's and Dermody's are all from Kilkenny.

William c1834 was born in Greens Road Kilkenny and went to school in Church Lane Kilkenny......our only dilemma is that not only are these two street names in Kilkenny but they are also in Callan a few miles out on the fringe of Kilkenny City. But at this stage the authorities!!! in Kilkenny say it is the former.

If you come across anything I would be ever so grateful, likewise if I come across anything of your names.

The Dermody, Darmody link could be interesting. Have you contacted the lady you spoke about. The Dermody names are Kyrian, Anastasia, Maria Kyrian was spelled any number of ways and he was married to a Mary Cody who went to the USA between the time Anastasia immigrated to Australia 1854-5 and when Maria immigrated in 1862. Although have never found her in the USA Census of 1860 1870 1880.

Regards

Rick

BURNS(Byrnes?)from Donegal & Derry, Ireland
Hi folks,

I am descended from Charles and Bridget's son Charles(1846) and am wondering if there's anyone here who has more info on them... any other descendents of this Burns family(or know of ancestors for them)... it's possible that the earlier spelling of the name could be Byrnes, but we only have only had the Burns spelling. Bridget's prts were Mary Gillespie and John Thomas. I am interested in the Burns line mainly. Bridget died in Glasgow harbour from drowning but I am unsure of where or when Charles died, Bridget is listed as 'widow' at the time of her death in 1885 and he was still alive in 1861 on the census. Their eldest son James isn't listed om the census, he was born in Donegal, Ireland in 1838. The younger child Henry, b. 1850 Glasgow is not on it either... may have been deceased(?) at that point as I have no further info on him.

1861 Scotland Census
Address: 16 Vennel Greenock West Renfrewshire
Charles Burns abt 1806 Ireland, Donegal Head, Occupation: Labourer Dock
Bridget Burns abt 1811 Ireland, Donegal Wife
John Burns abt 1842 Ireland, Donegal Son, Occupation: Border Maker (prentice)
William Burns abt 1844 Ireland, Derry Son, Occupation: Border Maker (prentice)
Charles Burns abt 1846 Ireland, Derry Son, Occupation: Border Maker (prentice)
Mary Burns abt 1849 Ireland, Derry Daughter

banjer6028
So sorry I haven't been on checking. Hugh Byrne married Blanche Landers who lived on Houston St in lower Manhattan. The had a son Harry (my G'father) before she died in 1895 and he died before 1900. The "s" was added with Harry. Harry was raised by his Aunt on 125th St. I've since found a Marriage certificate - Hugh's father was Peter Byrne from RI. Came to US in 1840's. Worked in the Cotton business as a bleacher. Family moved to NJ by 1880 where Hugh must have moved into the city.

I have a great grandfather named Hugh Byrnes, born in the late 1850's/early 1860 in NYC. It is believed his father was also a Hugh. My grandfather (Harry Byrnes) had a cousin named Jimmy Raymond although never could find out the relationship.
