Hi....just reading your message of May of this year..whoops.
I really don't know if we have a connection here because the Scanlans I do know about were out of Boherlahan, Cashel, Co. Tipperary, Ire, traced to supposedly William & Honora Britt Scanlan, tho there were several other Scanlan families there at the same time who also had numerous children. But, I believe my Gr grandfather Patrick came to the US in 1850 when he was about 20 and while in NY married Mary Ann Mykins. Then they both moved on to Peoria Co., IL, with their family, etc. (We do have the name Ellen in this lineage over several generations, but not yours.)
I don't know who my Gr grandmother Mary Byrnes Harmon's parents were. She was supposedly born in Co. Louth, IRE, Oct. 10, 1829, immigrated, then met and marr James Patrick Harmon in Peoria, IL, on May 14, 1854, tho he too was from Co. Louth but had been in IL since 1842/
That is not my only Byrnes ancestral link tho. That is the paternal side.
On the maternal side, my great great grandparents were also named Byrnes, and also from Co. Louth. He was Patrick Byrnes 1798-1865 and she was Alice Murray 1805-1896. They came here in 1845-47 with at least 7 children, born in IRE, then had two more in the US. I have wondered if they could have had a daughter Mary as well, but I have no confirmation, tho the time is right.
Good luck. Will be happy to share more if you think there is anything worth following.

Surnames: Byrnes, Connor, McEntee
I saw the Name Mary Byrnes Harmon. I have a Mary Byrnes Harmon, interred 12-19-1866, aged 64 years. The internment was in Holyhood Ce., Brookline MA. Place of death is unknown as no death cert. is on file at MA Div. of Vital Stats. She was born to Terrence Byrnes and Mary Connor of Dunleer, Co. Louth. Other children of Terrence & Mary are Anne (6-17-1803), Patrick (5-26-1805), Mary (7-31-1807), John (5-22-09), James (-6-28-1811). James, My Great Grandfather, married Margaret McEntee in Ardee, Co. Louth , 2-25-1835, The couple lived on Hale St. Ardee until they immigrated to the US of A. Its known that this couple had 6 children, Terence (7-1-1836), Mary (1-25-39), Patt (8-14-41), John (3-30-1844), Anne (9-9-1846), James (9-27-1850). Records available at this time indicate that Terence and John may not have come with the rest of the family in 1851. Does this sound familiar to anybody out there. I have a particular interest in Terence and John. Griffiths ( an abstract of) indicates a Terence Byrnes living at Irish Street, (Townparks) & John Byrnes living at Bridge St. (Townparks), Ardee, Co. Louth. In addition there is a John Harmon at Almondstown, Clogher, Co. Louth.

Thank you for asking about Anne Foley, but my Ann was born in June of 1847 - I don't know where other than 'Ireland'. She remains a big mystery to me.

Hi...sorry I have not checked this site out for ages...
re your Scanlan query.....My Scanlan connection is as follows: My Great grandfather was Patrick Scanlan, born allegedly to Wm Scanlan and Honora Britt Scanlan on 7 Aug 1831 in the parish of Boherlahan, Cashel, Co. Tipperary, IRE
I say allegedly because there was also a Patrick born to Patrick & Catherine Ryan Scanlan on 20 Nov 1845, same parish, and a Patrick born to John Scanlan & Alice Kennedy Scanlan on 27 Mar 1835...same parish. So it's a hotbed of Scanlans. I know my g grandfather came to USA about 1850 and there is one listed in NY City Census, age 18, with a brother John. And, my Patrick did marry in NY about 1856 to a lady named Mary Mykins. I have them tracked and verified to Peoria, IL, by 1860. Also verified is that Bishop Lawrence Scanlan, buried in Salt Lake City, Utah, was the brother of a Patrick from Boherlahan.....but prob the one born to Patrick & Catherine Ryan Scanlan.........confused????Help at all????

Thanks for your reply - yes, the trouble with tracing irish ancestors is the problem of so many names the same - it can sometimes help to trace a link, but so many names are common - only needs one gr-gr-gr-grandfather to be named Patrick, Lawrence, Charles etc and then like the ripples on a pond, all the following generations have at least one child called after them and the next people called after them. Thanks anyway, may help somewhere along the line!

Surnames: Burns Byrnes
I am researching Patrick Burns of County Louth, born in 1822, and immigrating to New Orleans in 1848. I picked this latest post, and thought I might get a hit on someone in the family.
