Surnames: BYRNES, Batchelder
Hello,
I am working on the Batchelder/Smith line, and while searching for information on the sisters of my 3rd great grandfather, Joseph Kidder Batchelder, I came across this rootsweb posting from several years ago. You were searching for information on the descendants of Joel B. and Anna (Batchelder) Byrnes of Kansas. Anna Batchelder was the sister of Joseph Batchelder. I myself have only started trying to find them recently so do not have a whole lot of information but would be interested in sharing what I have with you.
Joel married Anna Batchelder (or Bachelder) in Kankakee County, Illinois, in October of 1868. They lived in Chase County, Dickinson County, and Chautauqua County Kansas. Joel died in August of 1896, and is buried in Grant Creek Cemetery, Chautauqua County, Kansas. His grave marker states that he was "murdered by a drunken assassin". I only have information for three sons; Homer, George and Duane. I have pictures of Joel and Anna, and their three sons.
Please let me know if you are interested in sharing information. I am not a descendant of Joel but I have been trying to add the collateral lines of my direct ancestors so would be interested in obtaining more information on his descendants.
Thanks!
I realize these are old postings but hope that they are still being read!

I am at work right now, so can't access any of my research materials. But I did want to say that I have a picture of Homer Byrnes and wasn't certain who it was! I'm glad to know the names of Joel Byrnes' children.
I am a descendent of Joel Byrnes brother, James Bryan Byrnes. I'd be very interested in seeing any of the photos you have of Joel and his family. Besides the picture of Homer, I have a family group picture (from about 1870) of George W. Byrnes, his sons Joel and James Bryan, and 3 of Bryan's children, including my grandfather George Earl Byrnes. However, the image of Joel is not very clear.
I'll send you a further message later today.
Marsha Roach

Hi I'd be very interested in the information you have on the Byrnes/Batchelder line. I'm descended from this line as well. I've been trying to piece together the Byrnes line in my family. The elders of this side of my family did not talk much or know much of their lineage. Thanks!

Hi,
Have you read the postings by tntgen123 posted in the last couple of days? They have much more information about that branch of the family than I have.
I am descended from James Bryan Byrnes, the second son of George W. Byrnes and Sabra Anna Hawkins. He was born
Dec. 16, 1847 in Kankakee County, Ill, married Lucy Lura Hammond on Apr 2, 1868 in Kankakee, they moved to Kansas and had 3 boys and one girl. Their first son, George Earl Byrnes was my grandfather, born in Kansas, married Mary Ellen Backus. They moved to the Northwest in 1899. They had 3 girls, my mother was their middle daughter, Ethel May Byrnes, born in Coweeman County, Washington in 1900.

George W. Byrnes, the father of Joel and James Bryan Byrnes was a pioneer settler of Kankakee County. He was the first (appointed sheriff) of the county. He was fairly well-to-do, for the time and had a large house in Limestone Township. I have a copy of an illustration of the house featured in the 1884 Atlas of Kankakee County. I also have a couple of pictures of George W. Byrnes, one picture of his family, including my great-grandfather James Bryan and his brother Joel Byrnes.

I have a photo of his son Homer as a boy. I've had it always, but wasn't sure who it was until I got the information from Terry Larson (tntgenealogy). He had a copy of the same photo. He also sent a couple of pictures of Joel and his wife Anna, and a picture of each of their sons, George and Duane.

If you'd like me to send you any of the photos, reply to my e-mail address: marsharoach@hotmail.com

I apparently never answered your reply to my post, for which I am very sorry.

If you're still interested in information, I have quite a bit that I can give you. Just give me another reply.

Thanks for all the info that you put in your post.

If you check the post from 2005 you'll see that the person who posted the information follows the line of Homer Byrnes, son of Joel and Anna; I don't have any more information on the rest of the family. I am a descendant of Anna (Batchelder) Byrnes' brother, Joseph Kidder Batchelder and his wife Mattie Smith. But I can try to help you with finding more info if you'd like; I'm trying to fill in all of the collateral lines. Good luck!

What intrigued me most about your post was the combination of family names, Batchelder, Smith, and Byrnes. These three surnames in my tree. I've been trying to piece all of this together. Information on the Batchelder line would be helpful. Thanks Ann

Our line descends from Joseph Kidder Batchelder and his wife Mattie Emeline Smith. She was the daughter of Henry Franklin Smith and his first wife, Sarah Mariah Powell. Joseph was the son of John Alfred Batchelder and wife Marie? who moved from Vermont to Illinois. The Batchelder line can be followed in the "Batchelder, Bacheller Genealogy" and "The Kidder Family descendants of Ensign James Kidder". John's father was Henry(7), Uzziel(6), Joseph(5), John(4), John(3), John(2), John(1). Joseph's sister, Anna, married Joel Byrnes. His second sister, Susan, married Andrew Bruce. Anna's family and Susan's family went to Kansas while Joseph and Mattie went to Nevada. Let me know if any of this fits or I can be of more help!
