Cornelius Byrne, St. Louis, MO

I am looking for more information on Cornelius Byrne (b. 1810 in Ireland) and his wife Catherine Ann Donahue (b. 1839 in Ireland). They had 6 children Cornelius (b. 1858, Kentucky), Mary (b. 1859 Kentucky), Michael (b. 1860), Catherine (b. 1863 Kentucky), Jane (b. 1866 St. Louis) and Margaret (b 1869 in St. Louis). At the time of his death in 1878, Cornelius ran a bar near the river. I am trying to trace them back into Kentucky, or even find church records for their children's baptisms, communions, weddings, etc. They were Roman Catholic as the later generations produced several children that went into holy orders. A family story is that they owned slaves and lived in Tennessee before settling in St. Louis, but I cannot find any record of this. Any help would be appreciated!

I read your reply to the McGreevy post regarding the Kenneys. Since you spelled it with two e; and my gggrandfather's brother lived there I was hoping to share some information. My gggrandfather is Richard Kenney, wife Bridget Callery Kenney, and I believe his brother's name is John. He and John and others (maybe) traveled to Montana somewhere around 1878-1879, where Richard died. This was written in the family bible. If you have any information I would really enjoy hearing it. Thank you.

Hi Amy
I just finished the reply to you and somehow wiped it. So
we do it again.
My friend Jan has told me she has sent off to you some scanned pages from two of Grace Karskens books 1) The Rocks
2) Inside the Rocks (recently published the third one The Colony of Sydney.)
We thought you may like to know there is a Museum at the
Rocks, been there two years now and it is situated not far from where you Byrne family lived. Jan said that it is possible that they might have some artifacts there from your Byrne family. Perhaps even more information.

Where do you live, in Sydney?
If not would get the details of address and contact for you if you like so you can find out what they have. If there are an artifact or two from you family it would be good to be able to see them in the museum I think
Get back to me if you wish to follow up on this.

Hello, it was great to hear from you!

Thomas was also my great grandfather. His and Elizabeth Conniff Byrne's second daughter Elizabeth married Thomas H. Gribbin. My father Harold C. Gribbin was the first child of Thomas and Elizabeth's three children. Following the death of Elizabeth in 1906 Thomas married her older sister Laura and they had two children. Robert and Ralph Gribbin are my brothers and Paul was my uncle, the second child of Thomas Gribbin and Laura Byrne Gribbin.

I have no information concerning William being in Washington State but I do have information concerning Michael being there. The only reference I have found concerning William is his baptism date from records of St Patrick's Church in Rathvilly, Co. Carlow, Ireland.

Where do you fit into the Byrne family?

If you would like to exchange additional information outside of this message board you can reach me at ggribbin@verizon.net.

Gene

Lori,
Did you find any information on Sarah Byrne? She would be my great, great, great grandmother. I show she was born in Nashville, TN on either 12-1848 or 3-25-1849 and on my family tree she is named as St. Joseph, Missouri's first school teacher (located at 6th & Locust Streets). Peter O'Roarke was indicated as St. Joseph's first tailor. I also show her daughter as Sarah C. O'Roarke and Sarah C. married Francis Xavier Rochambeau. He was born in Nice, France (no year) and died in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1889 in a 2 freight train wreck. I am trying to find out the mother and father of Francis X to verify my lineage back to General Rochambeau who fought with General Washington during the American Revolution.
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Patricia Farley Ward

Hi Amy
I am a decendant of Richard Byrnes. Some of the Byrnes family settled in the Millers Point/ Rocks area and have remained there for 8 generations. The family names that are related to Richard Byrnes are Kaye and Luck, especially in the Millers Point area of Sydney.
I was also looking for information on the deaths and marriage of Richard's parents. I do have a sheet about Richard Byrne, his sons and daughters and his life as a rebel and where he went when he got to Sydney and then sent to Norfolk Island and the 500 lashed he received etc. What buildings he was given money for etc and his pardon then unpardon from Gov Macquarie. If you havent got that I would love to scan and send it to you.
Cheers
Dimity

Hi Amy,
A friend of mine has been in touch with you and tells me that she replied to a message board query of yours through Ancestry. That she supplied you with some scanned pages with reference to your Richar Byrne.
First not sure where you live?
If you live in Sydney or ever visit there, we now have a museum that has been opened at the Rocks for about two years.
Jan believes that you should visit there if possible as they may have some artifacts that were once owned by the Byrne family who lived at the Rocks. When these homes are demolished any artifacts found left behind are usually found ending up in a museum such as this one. They also may have further information on your early family.
If you are interested I will get the name of the Museum and details for contacting them for you so you could contact them direct. You will find most of the people in the Rocks are very helpful.
re the pages of the books that she scanned the pages from,These books are still on sale but you need to hunt for them. Could advise you on that as well if you wish.
Paddy

New Clan O'Byrne History
I hope this message is not considered "commercial," becaue I think it is something any Byrne researcher would like to know. A new history of the Leinster O'Byrne clan is about to appear--"The Byrnes and The O'Byrnes" by Daniel Byrne Gleeson-Rothwell, a work in 3 volumes. Volume One expands upon the legendary and historical background, concluding with the destruction of the clan system and the Williamite Confiscations. Volume Two brings the story through to the present day, with a wealth of genealogical information upon major and minor families and septs. Both volumes contain useful and detailed genealogical tables, and they are due for publication together in late autumn.
Volume 3 contains a great deal of research material and will be held back until 2010 as additional material may come to light after the publication of the initial volumes.
If anyone is interested, more info can be found at www.houseoflothar.com.
Thanks,
Paul Burns
I would be interested in any information you have on Bridget and John Byrne. I think they are probably not part of my Byrne family but my great grandfather was Patrick Byrne and his mother was Bridget Byrne, We do not know who his father was or Bridget's maiden name. Patrick was born in 1821 in Co. Donegal Ireland. Bridget Byrne was born in Parish Glen Columkille, Co. Donegal, Ireland in 1797. I think this is a stretch to think there might be a connection but we are at a standstill when it comes to Bridget or to any brothers or sisters for Patrick.
I have finally tracked down John's parentage!

His father was John Byrne of Ireland and mother was Bridget Cusack of Ireland.

Does anyone have any further information on these two? The earliest John Byrne arrival record on Castle Garden was 1834. The earliest Bridget Cusack arrival record was 1847, which seems too late as the son of John and Bridget was born in Missouri USA in 1845.

Warmest regards

Staley Mims
Portland, OR USA

The information I have on John Byrne and wife Bridget Cusack is rather minimal at present. I found them at FamilySearch.com (a Mormon Church resource). The source is a Marriage Record for John Byrne (Bridget's second son, b. 1845 in Knox Co. Missouri, my GG Grandfather) and Mary Myers in Knox Co., MO on March 1, 1870.

There is no information on Bridget other than her name. Her son John lists Bridget as being from Ireland on the 1880 and 1900 US Census Records. On RootsWeb, there is a database (talber501_5_17_2006) belonging to Thomas Albers, that documents a prior son born to John and Bridget , Edward L, b. 1844. It appears well documented and even metions a book or article "The Family of John and Bridget Byrne" by John W Kavanaugh. I haven't seen the book nor contacted Thomas Albers yet.

That's what I know at this point.

Warmest regards
Staley "Woody" Mims
Portland OR USA
I believe your grandmother moved to washington with her uncle william and family and met and married into the gribbin family.

We are related. Check out Moses Byrne's pedigree at familysearch.com (http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?P...). He was born in Latavich, Cheshire, England in 1822. His son, William Ortez Byrne (with Anne Buex), is my great-grandfather. Moses was a good Mormon and had 2 wives, producing 20 kids between them. Anne was his second wife. Enjoy your search.

Ann
