Hi to all on this thread,
My ancestor, Thomas BYRNE was a Butcher in Liverpool. In 1841 and 1851 he was married to a Maria, by whom he had two children, Mary and Charly. Maria died in the early 1850's and Thomas later married Ann PLATT in 1857 when his age was recorded as 35. However, every census from 1851 to 1881 indicates he was born about 1815. His marriage certificate states he was a Cattle Salesman, son of Joseph BYRNE, Husbandman. Thomas and Ann named their only daughter Maria in 1859, and she was my great-grandmother.

Thomas' first wife, Maria had a son named Joseph TRU(E)MAN by a previous marriage, but I can't locate the date or place.

I only know that Thomas was born somewhere in Ireland, so if anyone can connect him to the BYRNE family of Butchers at Birkenhead, I will be forever grateful.

regards Sandra

Sandra- My Byrne Butchers are descended from Michael Byrne (b.c.1820 in Rathdrum/Ballinderry Co Wicklow). He emigrated to Birkenhead between 1852 & 1854.He and his wife Priscilla (nee Wilmot) had 8 sons, John, James(butcher), Michael(butcher and politician),Charles, William, Edward, Stephen(Butcher)and Daniel. As far as I can establish-only John, Michael & Stephen had children- can't find any Thomas amongst them.

Hi Jane,
It was just a faint hope that my Thomas born between 1815-1822, might have been a brother to Michael, born 1820. I only know that Thomas' father was recorded as Joseph BYRNE, when Thomas got married to Ann PLATT. Although Thomas was in Liverpool by 1841, I have no idea if his father was also there, or if he remained in Ireland.

Hi Jane,
Thanks for your reply. Sorry for taking so long to get back to you - we've had a busy few days!
Firstly let me tell me what I know-
My great grandmother was Maria Byrne. She was born in Wicklow c1850's and was the daughter of Mary Byrne, formerly Roche, born c 1830, Wicklow.
Mary was widowed when Maria was young and brought her to Birkenhead to make a new start as some of her husband's family were living here. These were master butchers from Wicklow. The family have always known that Byrne Avenue was named after one of great granny's relatives but as we don't know her father's Christian name we haven't been able to make the connection via legal documents.
The reason we don't know his first name is because after Mary brought Maria to Birkenhead she married again, this time to a man called Thomas Wiliams who brought Maria up as his own daughter and was named as her father on her marriage certificate to my great granddad, Joseph Hind.
(There's a possibility "Mr Byrne's" name was John but we're not sure.)
I'd love to share info with you. You never know, if you have any elderly relatives they might remember some of the family names and be able to make a connection for us.
My family names are: Byrne and Roche, Wicklow; Byrne and Hind, Birkenhead; Hind and Quinn, Birkenhead; Quinn and Sorensen, Birkenhead.
You can contact me direct at trishg@ntlworld.com
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Trish
