My maternal grandfather's family origin
Has anybody out there heard of Rupert Byatt? He was given a life sentence for highway robbery and was sent to Sydney, Australia in 1840. Probably one of the few convicts who deserved their punishment!! I think he may possibly have been a brother of my grandfather's grandfather. My grandfather George Rupert Byatt was born in Perth, Western Australia about 1906. I am really interested in who my grandfather's grandfather was and therefore my lineage.

Re: My maternal grandfather's family origin
The only Rupert Byatt to be found on the whole of the IGI was born 1840,he was not on the 1881 census so could be your man.He was born in Abbotts Bromley which is a beautiful village in Staffordshire. Parents William and Sarah, other offspring,William 1818,Elizabeth 1822,Harriet 1824,John 1827,Mary 1831,Caroline 1835
William Byatt married Sarah Hodgson,in 1814 Blithefield,Staffordshire
If you put Abbotts Bromley and Blithefield into your search engine you will find it very interesting.

Re: My maternal grandfather's family origin
Dear Gary Please send me your personal email address. There are quite a few Byatts living in Western Australia. My grandfathers name was George Rupert Byatt and he was related in some way to Rupert Byatt the highway robber, but so far I haven't done much more research on it. Byatt means "by the yard or gate" I think.

Re: My maternal grandfather's family origin
Rupert Byatt came to Australia on the 17 November 1840 as a convict. He was on the last convict ship to come to Australia. He was sentenced after being found guilty for being a highwayman. On August 1840 Catherine Dunn arrived in a convict ship, sentenced for seven years for pickpocketing. She either came from County Cork or Kildare. She was sentenced in a Dublin Court. She arrived with a child and was a widow. By the time Catherine and Rupert wed in 1847, she had two more children... Jane Gaspar Dunn and Margaret Amelia Dunn. In 1850, a dughter was born - Sarah Byatt. The family went to the Upper Murray area of NSW and Victoria. In 1851, Mary-Anne Catherine Dunn was born to the couple in Tooma, NSW. A son was born to them in 1854 called John Byatt. Catherine died three years later. Rupert re-married Charlotte Darrell and had two more children; Harriet born in 1872 and Rupert Joseph born in 1874. When Rupert died, he was buried in the Pioneers' Cemetary at Miller's Hill, Corryong, Victoria. The children of Rupert and Catherine marreid locally and feature in many local family trees of the Upper Murray.
