I hope you will visit the website I have created on Family Tree Maker's site concerning the Byam/Byham family.
http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/b/y/h/Edgar-K-Byham/

I'm slowly but surely posting the entire "Descendants of George Byam (?-1680)" by Edwin Colby Byam, 1975. I have also been adding lines that I have found on the internet and through World Family Tree disks.

I would appreciate your sending me an electronic version of any trees you have with descendants of George Byam at Kim.Byham@NYPA.gov.

A reunion is planned for 2004 in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, the ancestral home of the Byams. Join us then.

My Grandfather LeRoy H. Byam born 2/29/1876 researched the family tree from when George Byam settled in Salem in 1635 and later moved to Chelmsford, MA. He tried to find more about the family in England but could only trace the family back to a Gainsborough portrait which now hangs at the Tate in London. My side of the Byam family originates, as I see it, from Jacob, b 7-13-1672 and m. Sarah Hildreth (?)1/1/1720. They proceeded to have 8 children. I am presently living in Cambridge, MD on the Eastern Shore and am interested in the Byam family reunion and interested in helping. I am a twin and was born on 4/17/38. My snail mail address is 107 High Street, Cambridge,MD 21613, My phone # is 410-228-8532. My twin sister lives in White Plains, N.Y. and my half-brother is William Meluish Byam living now in Lewes, DE. We are the last of what can I say this branch of Byams, other than three cousins.

The Gainsborough Painting and the Search for George's Roots

No descendants of George Byam (?-1680) are descendants of Mr. and Mrs George Byam and their daughter Selina, who are the subjects of Thomas Gainsborough's largest painting, "The Byam Family". The painting was done in 1764, well over a hundred years after our George crossed the ocean. The Byam Family in the painting are descendants of the three priestly Byam brothers described in one of my earlier posts. Their money came from sugar plantations in Antigua. The painting was briefly on loan to the Tate Gallery in London but now is at the Holburne Museum in Bath, appropriate since Gainsborough lived in Bath at the time the painting was done.

I'm delighted to report that work is underway on finding out where our George came from in England. I hope to have news to report this fall.

We're all cousins of each other and of Ezekial, the man who did so much to make practical the household match. You can figure out what degree of cousin you are by consulting "Descendants of George Byam" or my website (address under my post "Desecendants of George Byam." I have reproduced most if not all of what Edwin Colby Byam said about Ezekial and also included some information about the early work of developing the safety match.

Since we don't know where George Byam came from or who his parents were we have no certain connections to anyone in England. I suspect that the Gainsborough "connection" grew (as rumors do) from someone hearing that the famous painter did a portrait of the Byam family (no known kin to us). That painting is the subject of several other posts hereto. Remember that George Byam lived over a hundred years BEFORE Gainsborough, so at most they had some common ancestors, but I doubt it.
