You have posted your enquiries to the Byam Surname Message Board, not the Gainsborough Surname Message Board. We have no interest in Thomas Gainsborough's genealogy. Our interest is in one of his paintings. Please be sure to read previous posts in the future before you send such questions to determine if they are pertinent.

I saw your post in the Byam family message board and was curious about not only your Byam connection but of your Pierce connection. I'm currently researching about 16 family names in my family tree which include Byam,Pierce and Whitney.I'm a descendant of Abraham Byam Jr.(the grandson of George Byam), Abel Byam and his daughter Harriet. As for the Pierce side all I know at the present time is that Caroline Pierce married Joseph Whitney, who descended from John Whitney who settled in Watertown,Mass. in 1635..the same year that George Byam came to Salem,MA. Ironically some of my Whitney ancestors were living in Chelmsford,MA at the same time as George Byam was. I wondered if your Pierce line came from Massachusetts originally and if so perhaps it will lead me to my Caroline Pierce's family.

Dear Audrey, I was very interested to know that you are decendant of Jacob byam and Sarah Hildreth, as I am also. Jacob and Sarah had a son named Joseph Byam (Rev Vet) born Aug 15 1744 in Chelmsford Mass. He married Sarah Luce and had a son Jonathan Byam b May 19 1782. He married Betsy Cole around 1801 and together they had my gggrandmother Permelia Pulshare Byam b Sept 6 1826. I know everything about her and her children from there. (there were 12 of them, but only 8 lived to adulthood.) I have a beautifull picture taken of her and her husband William Patterson taken in Potter Co PA, in 1912 at a family reunion. If any of this sound familiar to you would you please e mail me at 2 jds@gvec.net. I have some names and dates and would like to compare to what you have. Sincerely Janet Lee Clark-Davis

Dear Janet, it sounds like you have a tremendous amount of material on the Permelia Pulshare Byam line. That's exactly the kind of material I'm looking for -- George Byam's descendants through the female lines that aren't in Descendants of George Byam. Please, please send me your material on FTW or a generic genealogy program so that I can add to my work -- available on Genealogy.com in a more complete form than here on Ancestry.com -- and make it available for others. I always privatize for living descendants.

Surnames: Mayers
Hi, my name is Kyle! I'm in the same situation, too! My great-great grandfather Edgar James Mayers (1899-1966) was claimed to be related somehow. My grandmother said back at Edgar's and Doris (nee' Hibbard)'s house that they had a painting of a copy of Blue Boy. Not sure how we fit in, by ancestor, uncle, or cousin.

Does anyone think there's a BYAM/BYRAM connection?

I have been doing extensive research on the BYRAM family (and the potential ancestors of Nicholas, b. 1610) in England. Nicholas is alleged to have been sold into indentured servitude to the West Indies - and made his way to New England. Many may already be familiar with the legend. I have an Ancestry.com world membership - and searched the card catalog for Barbados....where many supposed he was a servant.

In the database of wills and burials I came across a will for a Roger Byrom, 1661, Barbados. According to the 3 pages - here's what I've been able to glean about his tree as put forth by Roger's half-sister, Alice (Byrom) Wallis (c. 1661):

Roger's was a Weaver of London. Roger's father was John Byrom (a brewer of London who married first, Elizabeth). (The Worshipful Company of Brewers in London have record of him - as I've been in touch with their archivist).

John and Elizabeth had Roger (b. abt 1605), William (executor of the will - b. abt 1607) and Margaret (b. abt 1609 - who married a guy with surname "Blount").

John married (second) Dororthy Parker of Prestwich. They had 7 kids:

George Byrom of Ashburn Green, b. 1616 (who was on Barbados for a time and was alleged at some point to have returned to Derbyshire - perhaps temporarily or permanently)

John Byrom (who was on Barbados for a time and went on to Virginia, and then name spelled Byram)

Dorothy Byrom

Elizabeth Byrom

Henry Byrom (b. abt 1615)

Mary Byrom

Alice Byrom (b. abt 1625, married Edward Wallis)

Roger's first will was written in London, with the help of his (weaver Master) in 1643, just prior to going to Barbados..

How is all this relevant to GEORGE BYAM and the BYAMs of Antigua? One theory I have is that the BYAMs may have originally be Byrams/Byroms of England....because it doesn't seem that there's any info to be fuond on the Byam family prior to George (unless I'm mistaken. Are there pedigrees for Byams in England dating back to medieval times - as there are for Byroms/Byrams?)

PERHAPS George BYAM was born George Byrom/Byram - b. 1616, son of John (the brewer of London) and his second wife, Dorothy Parker of Prestwich. Perhaps he went to Barbados with his father and sibs - returned to Derbyshire for a while - and made his way to Antigua? What is curious - is that both Nicholas Byram (b. 1610) and George Byam (b. 1616?) ended up in New England. Also - IF George Byam was (originally) George Byrom - the death date of 1680 - makes a birth year of 1616 plausible for him.

Any thoughts or info or corrections are welcome by all! Thank you.

I have recently been in touch with a historian on Antigua and have info to share on the Byams, and Byam Fort. If interested in this info or in sharing info - please email me at gerriberger@yahoo.com.

Update - Perhaps no connection (of Byam to Byram). I just heard back again from the historian on Antigua who suggested the following book for the ORIGINS in England - of the Byams of Antigua.

See the following link to google books:
