Hello, I have been researching my family line here in Iowa. I have it back to 1799. At this time I have it back to a Robert W. Butler born in Maryland. Still trying to find his parents.... It has been said that my line were abolitionist and related to the John Brown liniage. Also, in the family line is the Harpers of Harpers Ferry.

Hello! I don't think our Butlers are related. My Butlers came from Northern Ireland and settled in New Jersey. The family then moved to Washington County, Ohio. As far as I can tell, they all stayed pretty close to that area. I don't know though if they came to the US with other Butlers that might have moved further west.

Becky

Somehow my posting of the family of Butlers in Vermont was not posted or disappeared. Here is the family history:

Butler Family as prepared by Professor James Davie Butler of Norwich, VT.
Professor Butler was born in Rutland, Vermont 1814 and was a world traveler
and writer. Info notes follow:

(1). Stephen Butler, Married with Jane __ died in Boston

Children of Stephen
(2)  Benjamin Aug 2 1653-Feb 10 1658; Issac Oct 9 1661/Aug 10, 1667;
(3) James Aug 2, died 1665 married "Grace".

Children of James & Grace
Mary Feb 21, 1683,
(6). Grace may 2 1685
Elisabeth Dec 23, 1686
(5). James Aug 21, 1688, died Boston, Married Abigail Eustice, died Dec 15,
1713.

Children of James & Abigail
Abigail, Jan 16, 1710/11
(7). Eliz, March 3, 1711/12
(8). James, Dec 4, 1713 married to (9). Elisabeth Davie, Wakefield.

Children of James & Elisabeth Davie
(10) James Feb 15, 1739, died Oxford, Ms. Married (11) Mary Sigourney

Children of James & Mary Sigourney
Mary
(12) James Davie Butler
Anthony
Elisabeth
Hannah
John
Peter
Sarah
Celia

Children of (12) James Davie Butler & Rachel Harris
Mary Sigourney
Sophia Gedney
Chloe Harris
James Davie Butler, born Jan 6 1814, married Anna Bates

Children of James Davie & Anna Bates
(13) James Davie, June 25, 1846
Anna
Agnes

NOTES:

1. Neither the family name of Stephen Butlers wife nor any other
particulars respecting him have been ascertained, except the record of the
births of his children, which was extracted from the city registers of
Boston, formerly kept in the Old State House. As he became a father in
Boston within little more than twenty years after its first settlement, it
may be presumed that he was an emigrant from Europe.

3. James Butler probably died before 1692, if the Grace Butler, married to
Andrew Rankin, April 15, of that year, by Simon Bradstreet, was his widow.

4. Information as to the kindred of Abigail Eustice may doubtless be found
in the public records of Boston.

5. James Butler was a proprietor in a rope-walk at West Boston; was married
April 6, 1710, by Rev E Pemerton of the Old South. He was probably admitted
to the First Church Jan 24, 1703/4. A folio Bible with Clarke's
annotations, now in my possession, as an heirloom from my father and
grandfather bears the name of the James Butler, my grandfathers grandfather
and the date 1713 doubtless written by his own land.

6. Grace Butler was married Dec 26, 1706 to Thomas Jackson, by Benjamin
Wadsworth, Minister of the first church. She had several children, and died
March 15, 1759.

7. Eliza Butler was admitted to the first church Nov 25, 1706, and was
married to Capt Ephraim Savage, Jan 8, 1712.

8. James Butler was by trade a goldsmith. About 1750, he removed to
Halifax Nova Scotia but proving unfortunate in his enterprise, soon return
to Boston. He afterwards lived awhile in Sutton, MS, but died in Boston in
1776, age 63.

9. Elisabeth Davie. A history of her ancestry to Great-great Grandfather
John Davie of Exeter, England and Julian Strode followed. If you desire the
info, let me know.

10. James Butler was brought up to the trade of a hatter; was married May
10, 1763 by Rev Andrew Eliot of New North church. In Aug 1774, fled with
his wife and 6 children under 10 years of age to Georgetown, ME, a four days
voyage. He was driven to this flight by the Boston port-bill, which brought
all business to a stand. After remaining four years in Maine, he returned
to Boston, and soon removed to Oxford, MS, where he resided till his death
Dec 20, 1827, age 88.

11 Mary Sigourney was great-granddaughter of a Sigourney, who being a
Huguenot, fled from Rochelle in France, with his wife and four small
children in 1685. This first emigrant was among the first settlers in
Oxford, MS, and some of his children married there. Through fear of
Indians, he removed to Boston. (Follows was information on his posterity)

12. James Davie Butler was born Boston Oct 5, 1765. In 1786, left a school
he was teaching in Oxford, to be a volunteer against Shays. Emigrated to
Rutland, VT in Aug 1787, was at first a hatter, in 1792 became a merchant
and continued in trade fifty years till his death June 3, 1842.
He was married Aug 22, 1802 to the widow Rachel Maynard and March 15,
1827 to Lois Harris. He represented the town of Rutland in the Vermont
Legislature, for the years 1812 and 1813. In the year 1814, he was a member
of the State Council.
His first wife was a daughter of Capt Israel Harris of Williamstown,
MS, who went with Ethan Allen's Green Mountain Boys to take Ticonderoga and
was an officer in the battle of Bennington.

13. This infant of days may be noticeable as being the seventh of those who
in one unbroken line during one hundred and eight one years have born the
name of James.

The father of (13) James Davie Butler was born in Rutland, VT, January
6, 1814. He was a college professor and world traveler. I have several
pages of information on him. He had children, specifically Anna 2 July 1860
and Agnes, 20 Dec 1863. I am searching for their descendants. I have
photo's of James, his wife Anna Bates and the two girls. We "believe" my
great grandmother may have worked for the Butlers in Madison, Wisconsin.

Ron Bestrom

I haven't come across an Anna Bates yet, but there are so many James Davie Butlers that it is possible. I am descended from an Anthony Butler born 1767 to James Davie Butler & Mary Sigourney. James & Mary had 20 children - Anthony is one (eldest I believe) and another is James Davie. Other children I have names for are: Eliza Ann, John, and Peter. Don't know any birth dates, but assume all were born in Rutland area. Any of this ring a bell with you?

Chris,
I accidently sent the last reply before I finished ... I just recently got some more family info from a cousin in Iowa. The James Davie Butler I am referring to was born in June 1847 in Vermont. He married a Nancy Burditt, with whom he had 6 children. He then married Elizabeth Ann Colgan and had 8 more children. One of his sons was James Daniel Butler born Feb 1884 in North English, Iowa. His second wife was my grandmother.
Again, thanks for your info.
Elizabeth

We are new at this too - so are still in the first stages of research. Your info indicated a lot of Southern place-names, but we know that our ancestors came from Ireland to Vermont/NY and then one or two brothers went to Iowa. We haven't heard of any who went south. So, we don't think we are a match at this time - sorry. Good luck with your hunting!

I'm not very good at this so the info I have may not help. Last night I was checking a time line for Butlers in Jackson County, TN. There was at least one James Butler born before 1777 and died 1839. A lot of these Butlers and their descendents left the area for places like MO and IL. I recall a reference to Iowa and several others, but there were so many I could not keep track. I was trying to connect with descendents of Whitaker Butler b. 1801 in NC but never tied them in.
I don't know of any ancestors in the Iowa area, but I do have close DNA matches in Kentucky and in Canada. Who knows. I will post your message to several other Butler researchers in hopes that someone can use your information. Thank you for your contact.

I don't think I'm related to this butler family that you are talking about, but was at an antique show yesterday and came upon a picture of a young woman with the Name Butler, no first name and Kingsley,Iowa on the picture. It spoke to me and I had to buy it. my maiden name was Butler, and I thought what if she was related, I couldn't leave her at an antique sale. silly I know but the picture just reached out to me.do you know if Kingsley is anywhere near where your relatives might have been? Sincerely, Shirley

Re: George Thomas Butler - b. abt. 1840

Was able to find this reply I made the other day to your first post.

Maybe this will help, it might be a clue:

I looked for his George's wife's family, and it looks like her father's name was Elijah Ensey, because i found a Nancy J. Ensey of the right age with Elijah as a father in an earlier census (I think it was the 1860, but didn't bookmark that).

And then found George and Nancy with dau Priscilla in the 1880. He was a bit younger than you thought, he was born about 1858-1859, but because he's with the correct wife, this seems to be him, from what the record looks like at least. I'll let you decide for sure, but the wife's name was Nancy (and they were living near her family, the Elijah Enseys).

Then I happened to check on Butlers in Coffee Tenn in the 1880 census, on this original census page:
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...

Came across a Peter Butler on the page linked above, and on the same page is Elijah Ensey in 1880 with his wife, and on the very next page of the census is George Butler with his wife Nancy J. and dau Priscilla.

So a pretty good clue, because people would often live near their relatives then. They were all recorded very close to each other in the 1880. There was even an older George Butler also, probably Peter's father or uncle, who was 72 or so, right by Peter and his family.

Maybe it will help. You should make certain these are yours though, you may need to do some cross checking on it all. But at least it's somewhere to start.

**See below for some copy and paste from the transcriptions.**

Regards,
Mary

This is the 1880 transcription for Peter and family, same page as the Elijah Ensey family and on next page is George and Nancy (Ensey).
1880 United States Federal Census about Peter T. Butler

Name:	Peter T. Butler
Age:	51
Birth Year:	abt 1829
Birthplace:	Tennessee
Home in 1880:	District 6, Coffee, Tennessee
Race:	White
Gender:	Male
Relation to Head of House:	Self (Head)
Marital Status:	Married
Spouse's Name:	Mary J. Butler
Father's Birthplace:	Tennessee
Mother's Birthplace:	Tennessee
Neighbors:	View others on page
Occupation:	Farmer
Name	Age
Peter T. Butler	51
Mary J. Butler	49
John C. Butler	27
Dilla Butler	14
William Butler	12
Michael Butler	10
Mary Butler	6

In the 1870, Peter's wife (and also in 1860) was named Nancy, but by the above 1880 it was Mary J, maybe a mistake? or who knows if Nancy died? They were living someplace else in this census in 1870, not Coffee.

Also note that the Butler name was transcribed incorrectly as you can see below, but someone came along and corrected the whole family to Butler, which if you look at the original it is:

1870 United States Federal Census about P Bertles

Name:	P Bertles
[P Butler]
Age in 1870:	40
Birth Year:	abt 1830
Birthplace:	Tennessee
Home in 1870:	District 2, Bedford, Tennessee
Race:	White
Gender:	Male
Post Office:	Shelbyville
Household Members:
Name	Age
P Bertles	40
Nancy Bertles	38
John Bertles	17
Lucy M Bertles	14
George Bertles	12
Peter P Bertles	10
Martha J Bertles	8
William Bertles	3

And when you look at the 1860 for the above Peter and family, George was only 4 months old, so his age holds up for the subsequent years.
Re: Picture of Butlers maybe Washington County, Ohio

Your Butler's have looks VERY similar to My Butler's. Do you know if any of them were ever in Georgia (There is a Washington County here as well), or in Yazoo, Mississippi or near Waco, Texas or North Carolina? Mine Butler Line lived in all those areas during different times in their lives. Another question - Have you found or Heard of Indian Heritage in Your Butler's? My Butler grandmother was Part Indian, but had enough Indian that she looked near whole Indian... But I can't find ANY proof of Indian heritage through her Butler line although we were told growing up that it was Her FATHER that she got the Indian Blood from - My research leads me to her MOTHER, who was a Tally - is likely the person she got her Indian heritage from... BUT I have SOOOOO many people telling me that their Butler line is definitely Indian, yet my Butler Line seems to trace back to England in the late 1700's & it seems many of them married into different American Indian Tribes back then. Are you have the same problem?

Hello! I have a picture circa 1900-1910 of a family sitting on a porch. One of the women is my great grandmother's sister, Bessie Butler, daughter of John Butler and Mary Pamelia Boyd. My aunt said the boy in the picture is her son. The son could be John Butler Thomas or Alfred Byron Collett. There are several generations of people in the picture. If anyone would like to see it and maybe help me figure out who they are, that would be great! Thanks!

I am decended from one of David Butler's siblings, I too am looking for the names of his parents, but I have info regarding other relatives:

My source is:
"Pictoral and Biographical Memoirs of Elkhart and St. Joseph Counties, Indiana Together with Biographies of Many Prominent Men of Northern Indiana and the whole State, Both Living and Dead"
Goodspeed Brothers Publishers, Chicago, 1893
John Morris Co. Printers and binders.

The info is from the bio of William Butler, bn in Indiana in 1831, his father was Zaccheus Butler born in Culpepper county, Va (of English Descent). Zaccheus had the following siblings, Alsea, nancy, Joshua, David, Elizabeth, George Fannie and Eliza.

Zacheaus was born in 1795, his father was killed when Zacheus was 21 years old. About 1820 or so they moved to Ohio, and then on to Indiana.

Hope this resource is helpful and if you have had any luck identifying the parents, please pass the word.

Rachel
This first link came up as a suggestion for JW Butler in a later census -- there's a 9 yo James here in the 1870, father's name only the initial A., and the mother Martha.

Now I can't guarantee that this 9 yo James is yours! But it's worth looking into this.

1870 census
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1870usfedcen&a...

When I click on the A. Butler for the father, it brings up this as a suggestion, which shows Anderson Butler 10 years earlier with a family with his wife named Martha:

1860 census:
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1860usfedcenan...

If you click on another suggestion for those who are researching Anderson Butler, it takes you to family trees which give info on a few of them that show Anderson Butler as a son of A. C. Butler. The trees show Anderson's wife as Martha or Patsy or Martha Patsy Smith.
trees:
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&db=pub...

Here's one of the trees with info:

Teri's Family Treasures
Public Member Tree
1 source Anderson Butler
Birth: 17 Oct 1807
Death: WFT Est 1857-1899
Marriage: Abt 1830 - Lawrence, Tennessee
Spouse: Martha Smith
Father: A. Butler

M: (Name Unknown)

Some trees show that Anderson died in 1880 so it must have been after the census that year because he was 72 living here in MS, and it shows he was born in SC as were his parents:
1880 census
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1880usfedcen&a...

And here's A. Butler and Martha Butler with family in 1850:
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1850usfedcenan...

The 1840 is more difficult because only head of household was named, but they have some suggestions off to the side for that too.

But a number of people are looking into Anderson Butler in the trees so it's worth looking at those for earlier info with the link above to the trees.

I'll let you decide if this is any help to you! It may or may not be your James as a 9 yo boy, but he wasn't coming up with the name Wash or Washington as a child, and the "James" was one of the suggestions off to the side when I clicked on the later census for Washington Butler.

If nothing else, maybe this will give you more leads, I hope.

Yes I have he died in 1931 MS and is buried in Jones County, MS not far from the Perry County line. His grave says "Wash Butler" I have been to the graveyard. Their children are as follows: Elijah Whitfield, b 19 Aug. 1887, d 5 Aug. 1978 (my grandfather) Then Charlie Reuben, b Jan. 1888, d before 1910. Then Archie Houston, b 3 Mar. 1892, d 7 Oct. 1986, then Luther Ray, b 23 Feb. 1906, d 10 Dec. 1955. Both Elijah and Archie lived in my mother's home before they died, so I have first hand knowledge of these. The others, Charlie and Luther I didn't ever meet. One of them married a lady named Terry Summeral, I believe it was Charlie. After he died she continued living with the family, and she is listed on one of the U.S. Census's as a daughter.
Where do you live? I am in Mississippi. Are you one of the descendants? I sure wish I could find his parents. Thanks a bunch. Melba
