I have not researched my husband's Butler line for a while, so I'm a bit rusty!! However, I am willing to exchange information. His ancestor, Mary Butler, was born about 1793, possibly in South Carolina. She married Phillip Wells on 2 May 1812 in Hardin Co., KY. Bondsman was William Kessinger and Attesting to the marriage was Able Butler.
She was the daughter of Shube (Shubel?) Butler and wife Elizabeth (Betsey?). According to genealogical research done by a man in Arizona years ago, Shube was probably the son of a James Butler who died in about 1820 and was of SC ... also father of Enoch, Ephraim, Seamon and others. His records indicate that there was a male child born to James Butler who died before 1800 when the US Census was taken (Fairfield Co., SC). His wife was named Elizabeth and she brought the children with the Butlers to Hardin Co., KY in the early 1800s.
There is speculation therefore that he died before 1800 in Fairfield Co., SC. There is a Betsey Butler shown on the 1810 US Census, Hardin Co., KY page 283. There is also speculation that she may have been a Kessinger/Keissinger. The probable children of this couple are:
Shuabel (Able) Butler born 5 March 1787 in NC or SC
md. Polly Portwood 24 Dec 1814 Barren Co., KY
Nathan Butler, b. about 1788 - md. Sarah Wells 22 Nov. 1810
Mary Butler - b. ca 1793 md. Phillip Wells 2 May 1812 in Hardin Co., KY
Sarah Butler, b. 1790s md. David Waddle 17 June 1813 Hardin Co., KY (surety was Able Butler and Wm. Clements)
If anybody has information on these people, please contact me.
