How are you related? I am a 3rd great-granddaughter. Do you kknow where she died and where she is buried? Thank you.
I am searching for the Burroughs Family of Vermont with the daughter of Fidelia Burroughs (born Feb 1827 either in Ohio or Vermont.)

On 21 Jun 1871, Fidelia married John F Shields (born 11 Jun 1814) in Rome, Jones County, Iowa, USA.

In the 1900 United States Federal Census > Washington > Pierce County > Puyallup > District 157, she is listed as Fidelia Shields, mother, living with Wilfred O Benadom, son [in census incorrectly listed as W C Benadom]. In this 1900 Census, she is listed as Fidelia Sheilds, mother, b. Feb. 1827, NY, AND as a widow as having 8 children, five who are living; they are:

I am also searching for the truth about the two wives of Simon Peter Benadom.
Fidelia did not die in 1866 as stated on p 372 of the Biographical Album of Lancaster County Nebraska:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~neresour/OLLibrary/pbal/pages/balc0...Quote: “Mr. Benadom has been twice married. Fidelia Burroughs, his first wife, was born in Vermont, and died in Iowa in 1866, leaving eight children--Almina, Emma, Mary, George W., Alice, Wilfred, and two who died in infancy. The second marriage of our subject, which occurred in 1867, was to Miss Hannah Jones, and to them two children have been born, but they are now dead [a daughter Zella, born 27 Jan 1869 and died 12 Nov 1875.] Mr. Benadom is a man of sound principles, is trustworthy as a citizen, and his character in private life is unassailable. In politics he is a stanch Democrat, and at the same time a strong Prohibitionist.”
I am the 3rd great-granddaughter of Simon Peter Benadom and Fidelia Burroughs. My grandparents and I decorated the graves of Simon Peter Benadom, Zella Benadom, and Mr. & Mrs. Charles Hood Smith (Almina Elizabeth Benadom.) All are buried in the same plot, Section 3, Plot 1, at Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln, Nebraska. I cannot determine where his two wives are buried and why they divorced or died.
FOR POSTING QUERIES (below):
Fidelia Shields-W.O. Benadom-Burroughs
Benadom, Burroughs, Shields, Marsh, Jones
Fidelia Burroughs is my 3rd great-grandmother. Fidelia was born Feb 1827 in either Vermont or Ohio.
I am searching for the history and burial place of Fidelia Shields; and the truth about her marriages (see below.)
She married Simon Peter (S.P.) Benadom on 07 Apr 1844 in Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio, USA. She divorced or left or vice versa before 1865 in Jones County, Iowa because Simon married Hannah Marsh Jones on 09 Sep 1865 in Cedar County, Iowa, USA.
Then Fidelia married John F Shields on 21 Jun 1871 in Rome, Jones County, Iowa, USA.
By 1880, only she is listed as living with her youngest son in Kansas and by 1900 in Washington. I find no mention of her in the 1910 Census.
AN UPDATE:
In 1850 S. P. Benadum [all spellings per Census index] and family were living in Rome, Jones Co., IA. S. P., b. OH, 24, blacksmith; Fidelia, b. VT, 23; Almira E., b. OH, 4; Emily, b. IA, 3 and Mary b. IA, 1. [See listing of their children in the 1900 Census.]

From 1862-1865 Simon and Fidelia parted somewhere between 1862-1865 because:
Their last child Wilfred O Benadom was born Mar 1862 in Jones County, Iowa; and
Simon married Hannah Jones (nee Marsh) on 09 Sep 1865 in Cedar County, Iowa.
In the 1870 United States Federal Census> Iowa > Jones County> Rome she is listed as: Adelia Burrows Rome, Jones, IA abt 1828 Ohio White Female SHE OWNED REAL ESTATE; living with here were her daughter & son:

7. Carrie E Benadom, b. Abt. 1857, d. Unknown, but before 1900
8. Wilfred O Benadom, b. Mar 1862, d. 24 Oct 1951
In 1903 in Anamosa, Iowa, Genealogy Obituary Index for Jones County, Iowa, the obituary for Almina Herrick (nee Burroughs), who died October 2, 1903, mentions Fidelia Shields: " . . . Besides her children, one sister, Mrs. Fidelia Shields, of Lincoln, Nebraska, three sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren remain to mourn their irreparable loss."
Perhaps Fidelia had returned to Lincoln, Nebraska by 1903.
In the 1904 Mortuary Record: a Mrs. Fidelia Shields is listed in the Semi Weekly Reporter (Waterloo, Iowa) Tuesday, January 3, 1905: "Mortuary Record for Year 1904" as dying in March 1904.
In the 1910 in Tacoma Ward 7, Pierce Co., WA Wilfred O. and family appear but no Fidelia. Wilfred O., b. IA, 48, marr 22 yrs; Harriet J., b. WA, 43, had given birth to 5 children but 4 were alive in 1910; Villa, dau, b. OR, 20, single; Clyde, b. WA, 17; Bernadean, dau, b. WA, 14 and Theodorise (dau) b. WA, 5.
In 1920 Wilfred and part of his family are living in Lynden, Whatcom Co., WA. Wilfred, b. IA, 57, widower, Methodist minister; Theodore, dau, b. WA, 15 and Jan Vanasselt, mother law, b. judyartley1@msn.comYou can contact Betty Jones, email=
fjones3849@aol.com to check the Pierce Co. Death Index.
The Tacoma-Pierce Gen. Soc., can be contacted as
www.rootsweb.com/~watpcgs.
You can search through Pierce Co. Cemeteries at
www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/washington/wa-pierce.htmI also found a separate entry for an Adelia Burroughs who d. Feb. 8, 1909, Toledo, OH, Lucas Co, record #8.747. I'd investigate this since it was from an index & we know how garbled they can get. Also, Fidelia once before used the name of Adelia.
Thank you for all your expertise. I really appreciate this. I am posting a more complete follow-up to my first query.
Burroughs, Herrick, Cowan, Benadom, Shields, DAR: Genealogy Obit. Index Jones IA
Does anyone have the complete obituary or how do I access this Obituary Index:
One item we ran across in Anamosa, Iowa, Genealogy Obituary Index for Jones County, Iowa, mentions Fidelia Shields. The obituary is for Mrs. Almina Herrick. I do not have it saved electronically, so I'll just quote parts of it here:
"Almina Burroughs Herrick, was born at Syracuse, New York, October 22nd, 1825, and died at her home in Olin, Iowa, October 2, 1903, of bronchial asthma and heart failure, aged 77 years, 11 months and 10 days.
"She lived in the state of New York until six years of age, when with her parents she moved to Canal Winchester, Ohio, where she spend her youthful days, and where she was married to Jason Darrington Herrick, in October 1843, at the age of 19."
[There is a long write-up of her children, husband's activities, and Mrs. Herrick's life.]
" . . . Besides her children, one sister, Mrs. Fidelia Shields, of Lincoln, Nebraska, three sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren remain to mourn their irreparable loss."
[Then there is a long tribute to Mrs. Herrick and a detailed description of her funeral.]
