Daniel Burket b 29 Mar 1799 in VA moved to Harrison Twp, Preble Co. OH by 1820

I'm seeking information on Daniel Burket's parents, Daniel is my Great Great Great Grandfather. In the census, he consistently lists VA as his birthplace, however I have found no evidence that the other Preble Co., Darke Co. or Montgomery Co Burket's, there in 1820, are directly related. This Daniel was a farmer (didn't own land) and married Catherine Nealeigh (Neely, Neelich from PA) in 1820 in Preble Co., OH. They had 11 children together. Both are buried in Roselawn Cemetery in Lewisburg, OH.

Does anyone have a clue as to where this Daniel Burket may have come from in VA? Any and all help would be deeply appreciated. (FYI his birth date was pieced together from the Census and a new death record I recently found.)
Thanks!

Re: Was Frederick C Burket hatched or did he have parents?

I wonder if he might have been connected in some way to Christian Burket (Burger, Burget, and other spellings) of Blair County, Pennsylvania. See http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=27... and http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Bu...;

I have a Sarah Burket, who was the daughter of Christian Burket/Burger and Catharine Mentzer. She married Joseph Harry Nettz in Ogle County., Illinois, about 1866. Joseph and Sarah (Burket) Nettz lived in the Grand Detour area. David Burger, a son of Christian Burket/Burger and brother of Sarah Burket, served in a Civil War company from northern Illinois, but he returned to PA later. I came across a biography of immigrant Israel Burket (Burchert) that seems like it is probably relative to the ancestors of Christian Burket/Burger, but I have not yet researched it: http://www.pagenweb.org/~somerset/bios/isreal.htm

Transcription of " The Prominent Families of the United States of America ", including surnames Beekman, Burket and Arnold on pa

This is a transcription of three pages from the book " The Prominent Families of the United States of America “ at http://www.emptynestancestry.com/transcription-the-prominent.... Of the three pages, there are three families mentioned but only the Burket page is complete as that is the family I was researching. It's worth looking at the Arnold and Beekman names as I'm sure they provide valuable clues to more information.

Sources, images and documents about this family and numerous others are available for free access through the links below the signature lines.

I would appreciate any information that would help with my own research.

Christine Blythe
http://emptynestancestry.com
http://blythegenealogy.com

It's been quite some time since you originally posted with your offer to do a lookup in the Adam Burget Family book. I sure hope this message reaches you!

I am looking for whatever information is available concerning Edith YON, b. 8 Sep 1813 who married to George METZGER (also known as George Hoover Metzger). They married ca 1830. Edith died in Morrison's Cove, Bedford Co., PA 30 May 1837.

From what I can gather, D. Frank Bayer's book is the original source for much of the genealogies online which list Edith YON as George Metzger's wife. I believe she is the daughter of my ancestor, William Yon.

William Yon came to Bedford Co., PA ca 1830 from Frederick Co., MD. He is the progenitor for all of the Yon/Yohn families of Bedford and Blair Counties.

Thank you for your help!

His son Andrew, James and some of the Steckman children are buried in Essex Cemetary in Rock Island County, near Illinois City, IL. But no mention of Harriet or Andrew.
Burket (Burkert) Family Tragedy

Burket (Burkert) Family Tragedy as Reported in Local News: The hand of affliction has been resting heavily in the household of Al Burket during the past few weeks. Within seven week's time, three children were taken by death, the last two dying only three days apart. Freddie, was born October 14, 1885, died April 30, 1889, aged 3 years, 6 months, and 16 days. He was buried in the Lutheran cemetery on last Thursday. Carlton Ray was born July 1, 1882, died May 3, 1889, aged 6 years, 10 months, and 2 days. He was buried by the side of his little brother and sister. Rev. Myers officiated on both occasions. . Thus three little mounds of fresh earth may be seen side by side which reminds us that the cruel monster death, with ruthless hand has snatched from the same stalk three little buds to be unfolded and blossom in another world. This family can truthfully say, one affliction doth upon the heels of another tread. Mrs. B. but a few months ago, fell from a chair and broke her arm. This had scarcely healed, when the baby, an only daughter, sickened and died, but this trouble was only followed by another. The remaining three little ones took down with the measles. They had not fully recovered from this malady when two were again taken with catarrhal faver, lingered two weeks and both died. In the midst of all this affliction the father of Mrs. B. was accidently killed and buried. Such a recital cannot fail but to awaken the sympathies of the hardest heart. The Cambridge City Tribune, Cambridge City, Indiana, Vol. XXV, No. 4, Thursday, May 9, 1889, p. 2

William Albert Burkert/Burket (Son of Frederick Burkert) and Ella Cash were married May 15, 1881, in Wayne Co., Indiana.

Known children include:

Carlton Ray Burket was born July 1, 1882, died May 3, 1889
_____ (son) Burket was born December 18, 1883
Freddie Burket, was born October 14, 1885, died April 30, 1889
Lillie Burket, was born December 28, 1887, died March 11, 1889
_____ (son) Burket was born 15 August 1889
_____ (son) Burket was born 14 March 1890
_____ (son) Burket was born 28 January 1893
Hi, I am looking for directions to the Cessna-Burkett family cemetery plot in Tatesville, PA. It is located near Route 26 between Yellow Creek and Tatesville. Samuel Whirl is buried there in the late 1800's. He married Catherine Batzel who was related to the Burkett family. The is a Civl War grave marker for Samuel Whirl on the grave. The plot is in a field. Thank you, Mike Carroll

Peter Burket cousin to.....also married 3 times and 33 kids

This newspaper article is the ONLY proof I have that Peter was a cousin. One has to ask the following, "Was he Franklin's father's cousin or Frank's first cousin?"
If anyone descends from the names mentioned in this article please email me. I descend from John Cyrus.

transcribed from the Weekly Courier Connellsville, PA March 20, 1913
Somerset Man belongs to family where Children are many.
Somerset, March 14- Street Commissioner Franklin Burkett of Somerset, is proud of the fact that he belongs to a family in which race suicide is unknown. Commissioner Burkett was born in Allegheny Township, near the Topper distillery, a son of Christopher and Matilda Burkett.
His father was married twice. By the first marriage, the family to which Commissioner belongs, there were four children and by the second union there were thirteen. The grandchildren are so numerous that Commissioner Burkett has not accuratley computed them. Commissioner Burkett's eldest sister, Mrs. George Null, is the mother of 14 children. Another sister, Mrs Frederick Custer, is the mother of 13. Cyrus Burkett who was married twice, was the father of 23 children, while his brother, Albert, also married twice, reared a family of (looks like 15 or 16). Mrs. Matilda Barnhart was the mother of 11 children, while Frank and Walter Burkett each have five children.
Commissioner Burkett's cousin, Peter Burkett, was married three times and had a family of 33. end of article.

At the time this was published it only mentions Franklin's living siblings. Based on other family documents Franklin's full name appears to be Benjamin Franklin.
Do you have anymore information on her?
You would almost certainly have spotted Mathildy Goll (spelling from her early church records) in my GEDCOM, since I'm really the only person who has researched this Goll lineage extensively. Most other GEDCOMs copied my data on the descendants of Balthazar Goll of Hagerstown, Md. I do indeed have her birth and baptism data, but had no further traces of her.

I have transcribed this article the best I could from the "Hearld" written in 1909 it follows the Burget, Burket family line back to 1748, living in the "Cove area. Histories of families in the area. I find the writing somewhat disjointed, but a starting point.
I hope this is helpful. Transcribed article below:
--------------------------------------------------

Opening Chapter of Family Histories

To Appear From Week to Week
In the Herald – Some Facts
Relating to Early Cove
Settlers
------------
A Feature of Interest to Many Members of the Herald Family—Date Compiled by
J.C. Frederick, Our Correspondent at
Clover Creek
Information for Readers
In the beginning the histories of several families, we anticipate the difficulty of obtaining sufficient information to make the work interesting to the reader, but we shall do the best we can with the data we have at hand, hoping that those who are interested in this work will lend us their help by sending us the information asked for by the Herald of August 24, (1906)

We shall precede the Burget family history with a sketch of the early history of Morrisons Cove. The scope of territory knows as “The Great Cove, later named Morrisons Cove, received its name from a settler coming from the Conococheague. The cove was famous some years before any settlements were made in any other part of the territory included in Blair county.

There was an Indian post at Frankstown as early as 1730, being aside of the village of Assunnepachla, which signified the meeting of many waters. Tradition says that Frankstown was named after an Indian name Old Frank. Another historian says it was named after an Indian named Stephen Frank or Frank Stephen. Conrad Weiser, the great Indian pacificator say is his record that the voyaged to Juniata as far as Frankstown in 1748.

The settlements in Morrisons Cove antedate all other in Blair county. Blair was part of Cumberland from 1750 to 1771, when it became a part of Bradford, the ninth county in the State. Various reasons are attributable why certain places are settled in preference to others, such as facility of access, irrigation, richness of soil, etc. In looking at the settlements in this sketch, we will notice that they were made, no doubt, because of water. The water supply has always been an index to first settlement. A number of grist mills were built in the Cove prior to 1800. Jacob Neff’s mill at Roaring Spring was the first one. It was burned down during the first great Indian massacre in the Cove about 1762.

Tradition says that Neff saw two Indians in that act of hiding behind a fallen tree, he quickly seized his trusty flint-lock and shot one, the other making his escape. Neff then sought safety at the fort near Saxton, returning and rebuilding prior to the Revolution, on the site where the Indian left the one in ashes. John Ullery bought it afterwards and after it has exchanged hands several times, D.M. Bare bought it in 1861 and built a much larger mill in 1869. A mill was operated on Clover Creek shortly after the Revolution; also one by Martin Loy, at Loysburg in 1795, and purchased by James Patton in 1844, by Daniel Bare. Jr. and Andrew Spanogle in 1860 and by W. H. Aaron in 1864.

Many settlers along with Jacob Neff escaped to the fort, but one family living on the David Rice farm, refusing to go wee all killed. The settlers were in danger even till the year 1790. For we find that the wife and children of John Martin were captured by the Indians. Now John Martin was the first Bishop of the drunkard or Brethren Church (Yellow Creek branch) before the Revolution. Daniel Paul and bishop Overholtzer were also ministers of the same church. In fact, Morrisons Cove settled at first altogether by German drunkard, Judge Dean said at the centennial of Blair county, 1896, that the assessment of the county in 1847, showed a population that was one-third German.

The massacre of the wife and four children of Mathew Dean, paternal great-grandfather of Judge Dean, deceased too place in 1780, in the Canoe Valley, just north of Morrisons cove, being Scotch Presbyterians.

Martinsburg was named after Jacob Martin, the surrounding vicinity having been settled prior to the Revolution.

Among the settlers in 1800 were the Martins, Neffs, Winlands, Teeters, Longs, Holsingers, Sells, Puterbaughs, Benners, Hoovers, Brumbaughs, Burgers, flukes, Browns, Pauls, Looses, Furrys, Replogles, Millers, Glasses and others, nearly all of whom come from Conococheague valley, in Franklin county, and were almost all German in language. They were thrifty people and very hospitable. Church services were not conducted on commodious churches, but in houses and barns. And the oldest historian here at Clover Creek, who is nearly 90 years old, says that the services were conducted from house to house each Sunday, and as there were 17 houses in the circuit they had preaching at home every seventeen weeks. Love-feasts were conducted in the barns. Ministers traveled on foot and horseback for many miles across the mountains, infested by wild animals, and through the monotonous, lonely plain, to their missionary work.

The early towns of the cove were Williamsburg, Martinsburg and Woodbury. The town plot of Williamsburg was laid out in 1795 by Jacob Ake, receiving the mane, Aketown. He also furnished a free school as early as 1790. An early school was taught on the Hyle farm, and the Red Ore bank, on Clover Creek as early as 1789, by John Breidenthal. John Diltz taught a school in a privite homes at Henrietta, in 1795. About 1800 John Fisher taught at what is now East Sharpsburg.

In beginning the Burget history we will start with Jacob Puterbaugh.

Jacob Puterbaugh lived on the Puterbaugh homestead, now owned and occupied by John McGraw. He was one of the earliest settlers, for he was compelled to leave with his family for the fort just east of Tussey’s mountain before the massacre of 1762, returning shortly afterward. A story has been told that the cattle and horses of one of the settlers were left behind in their flight, but the next morning all the stock had miraculously found their owner at the fort.

After some time the Puderbaugh family returned home to find everything undisturbed. They had several children. Among them were: David, who owned the farm now occupied by Frank Crissman and also operated a tannery and store in Martinsburg at different periods; one daughter, Elizabeth, was married to Jonathan Hoover, whose brother Christian, operated an oil mill in the Cove about the year 1800; another daughter, Maria, was married to Adam Burget, a young man of Conoccocheage valley. Many of the other Burger families in Blair and Bedford counties are of distant kin and we hope to trace their relative identity at some future day. Jacob Puderbaugh, according to what we have been able to learn, go a patent on the territory extending from Kunkle’s ridge to where Jacob b. Burget now lives. Here he and his wife lived and died and were buried on the eastern side of the farm in a small enclosure that has been long neglected. (This cemetery should receive some attention, for it is sorely in need of a new fence.
The trees and brush and briars should be removed.) Adam Burget married Maria Puderbaugh in 1785. They moved to the place where Isaac Hoover now lives and lived there until their death, a period of fifty years. Both were buried in the J. B. Burget cemetery which Adam Berget Sr., owned at the time of his death. They were the parents of twelve children, as follows:

David P.
John. P.
George P.
Christianna, wife of Adam Bulger
Elizabeth, wife of John Kensinger
Catharine, wife of Baltzar Young
Abraham P.
Mary, wife of Joseph Coughenour
Jacob P.
Ada. P.
Henry P.

David P. married Nancy Bulger and lived on the old homestead. While returning from the Allegheny mountain, coming down a hill near East Sharpsburg, he slipped and fell under the wheels of the wagon while in the act of drawing the breaks. This accident cost him his life. He died March 21, 1840, aged 54 years, 1 month and 7 days. Possibly no other family name con trace or name as many worker in woodcraft or carpentry.
The ancestor, Adam Burget, Sr., was a builder and it is said that he hewed the logs for many houses and barns, which by the way were all framed and built up with logs and had in early times, roofs made of long rye straw, bunched and tied in such a manner as to conduct the rain from the building. Mr. David B. Wineland of Clover Creek has a broad axe that was used by Adam Sr., it being of peculiar shape. This axe is a least 100 years old and still is good condition, notwithstanding its almost continuous use.

David, the first son of Adam Burget, Sr., was a farmer and teamster and his two sons were farmers. Isaac living on the old homestead and Adam where Jacob B. Burget now lives, all of which land apparently had belonged to David.

John P. Burget, the second son of Adam Burget Sr., was a farmer and also a builder; form him descended a score or more of contractors, builders and wood workers, some of whom are among the best workman to be found anywhere. John P. was married to Catherine Bulger, born July 3, 1791. They lived on the western side of the John Deihl farm. The only landmarks today are part of a house foundation and an old well on the spot which about 1812 was their home. They are both buried in the J.B. Burget cemetery; John P. aged 62 years, 5 months and 121 days, and his wife 58 years, 3 months and 14 days. The following children were born to them; eight in number:

Barbara, married to Jocob Keiffer
Mary, married to George Metzker
David B., married to Nancy Wyant
Adam B., married to Barabra Snowberger
Henry B., married to Magdalena Adams
Elizabeth, married to John D. Frederick
John B., married to Susan Smith
Sophia, married to Jacob Keiffer

Barbara, married Jacob Keiffer, lived near Woodbury, at Dry Hill. Among their children were, the wife of Jacob S. Brown and the wife of Abram S. Brown, and Susan, unmarried, all deceased. We regret we do not have fuller information of this and several other families. Among the descendents of this family are several ministers: Rev. Charles I. Brown, president of Findlay College, Findlay, Ohio, and Rev. J.K. Brown of near Woodbury, sons of Adam S. Brown. Brown’s mill at Loysburg is operated by a grandson, J.H. Brown, son of Jacob S. Brown.

Mary, was married to George Matzker, their children are:
Ann Maria, married to Samuel Clapper
David, married to Sarah Hoover
George, married to Susan Lynn
Rebecca, married to Andrew smith

Rev. George M. Clapper of Carrington, North Dakota, is descendent of the first of the above children.

David B. was married to Nancy Wyant. This family lived in the vicinity of Martinsburg and their children who are living today live in the same vicinity on Piney Creek. The following were their children:

Henry, married to Catharine Schell
David, married to Mary Graffins
Samuel, married to Miss Treese
Barbara, married to John Smouse
Adam B. was married to Barbara Snowberger. Adam was a carpenter and builder and his three elder sons are also of the same trade. George married to Elizabeth Miller, and Jacob married to Jane Zook, with their families, live at Everett.
David, married to Sarah Wyand, lives at Curryville, where he has a planning mill, saw mill, chop mill and also a large general store.
One daughter Nancy, was married to Joseph Clapper, both are dead. Adam was married the second time to Mrs. Lyda Burget. Their children were: James and John married and Susan married to a Mr. Smith and Annie, married to a Mr. Stern.

Henry B. was married to Magdalene Adams. We lack data concerning this family that lived in the vicinity of Loysburg.

Elizabeth was married to John D. Frederick. They lived on the homestead now owned by Adam Frederick, the oldest son of the family. There used to be a spot pointed our near the Matthews farm on the north as the ruins of the old log house where John D. Frederick grew from a youth to manhood, but originally this family come from Conococheague Creek, Franklin county. To this union were born thirteen children:

Adam, married to Anna Kauffman
John B., Married to Sarah Kauffman
Now married to Caroline Stonerook
Catharine, married to George Witters
Sarah, married to Daniel Kauffman
Samuel, Married to Susan Showalter
Mary, married to John C. This family lived near Bossler Station. Their children are:

Levi S., married to Nancy Byers
Henry S., first married Margret Folknor, now married to Mary Hagey
John S. Married to Susan Brenner
George S. Married to Susan Brown
Manuel, died in infancy
Charles W. married to Margaret Shultz

The above family contains a number of mechanics and carpenters of note, all living in Martinsburg.
The last child of John P. was Sophia, married to David Leidy. We lack information concerning this family

FAMILY HISTORIES
Continued

We now take up the data of George P. the third son of Adam Burget Sr.

George lived across the meadow about twenty-five rods south-east of David’s residence, now occupied by Isaac Hoover. An old well is about the only memento of this dwelling place.

He is married Catharine Siess. George was born in 1780; died in 1871, aged 81 years. Their children were:

Susan, married to Joseph Wineland
Mary, married to David H. Seven children were born to them:
Samuel , married to Belle Harris
Jacob, married to Nancy Metzker
George, married Catharine Smouse
William

We lack information of the remainder of the family.

David, married to Catharine Glass, lived in Martinsburg for many years, up to the time of his death. Six children were born to this union:
William H., married to Alice Snyder
Lizzie, married to James Bookhammer
Mary Ann, married to John O. Shubert
Catharine, married to Edward May
Harriet, died when yet young

Of the other children of George P. we lack sufficient information to warrant us giving a record.

Abraham P., was married to Frances Siess. They lived where John B. Frederick now lives and where his oldest son, Abraham S., lives the greater part of his life. Here he followed his occupation, being a cabinet maker. (The writer was shown a chair a week ago that he made possibly 75 years ago) They had eight children:

Abraham S., married Mary Glass first and second marriage to Susan Stonerook
Samuel S., was married four times. They shortly afterward moved to Ohio, as also did Christianna, married to Abram Bulger.

Susan married Andrew Bulger, being a brother of Abram. Andrew Bulger’s lived in the vicinity of Woodbury, rearing a large family. These children are:

Abram, married to Susan Zook
Daniel, married to Margaret Myers
David, married to Elizabeth Ebersole
Anne, married to John teeter
Pauline, married to John H. Brumbaugh now lives, but of his subsequent life I cannot say anything. Several children were born to this family, and I regret that I do not have more of their history.

I now take up the history of Adam P., who married to Catharine Metzker; they lived a good old age. Their children are:

John M., who was married to a Miss Lanz. They resided at Eldorado. John M. was formerly president of the Burget association and had gathered much data about the Burgets. He died in august. 1905. Just prior to the fourth reunion, held in Burget’s Grove, near Henrietta.
David, married to a Miss Spidle, lives about one mile and a one-fourth miles west of Millerstown.
Daniel, lives in the same vicinity where David is. Harry Burget is the only child.
Henry and Samuel are the next two. No data.
George M. of Iowa was married to Ellen Snowberger. It was my good fortune to meet George M. He is very sociable and genial. The following children grace their home:
Ellen, Laura, Harry, John, Joseph, Margret, Frank, Earl, Maud and David
Sarah, married to Henry Barr. They live on Piney Creek on a farm. Marshall, a member of the executive committee of the Burget association is a son.

Christianna, married to George Shoenfelt, lives in Taylor township.
Catharine, married to Lewis Davis, resides in Martinsburg.

Elizabeth, the tenth child, was married to John Kensinger. They lived near Fredericksburg on the old Kensinger homestead. Their children were:

Margret, married to Jacob smith, lived on the farm now occupied by Calvin Skyles, near Millerstown. Their daughter, Susan, also lives on this farm, being the owner.

Isaac, married to Elizabeth Ainsworth, lived in the vicinity of Fredericksburg at the time of their death, living in the house now occupied by their daughter Mary,

David, married to Mary Ann Smouse. They still live at the place where they have resided many, many years, near Kensinger’s school house.

Adam, married to Juliann Chamberlin. They lived on the farm now owned and occupied by D.C. and A.C Kensinger. The children living are: Isaac, George, Adam, David, and Margret Ann.
Ephraim, married to Catharine Brumbaugh
Mary, married to John Loose
Lydia, unmarried

(We regret that thus far no one has given us any letters of information; thus we have to depend upon our own fund of recollections and memories which no doubt often were meager.—J.C.F.)

September 28, 1906

FAMILY HISTORIES

We have so far given the genealogy of ten of Adam and Maria Burget’s family.

The eleventh child was Catharine, who was married to Balzar Young. They lived on the farm now owned by William Layman, at a point opposite the road leading to the farms occupied by S.B. Shriver and George Samuels. The writer knew this spot by a large clump of roses and other fragrant flowers; also by the old orchard, part of which remains even now.

They reared a family of sixteen children namely:

Abram, died in infancy
Adam, married Betty Ebersole
Susan, married to a Mr. Puderbaugh
Sarah, married to Jacob Bulger
Mary, married to Peter Wilt
Christiana, married to Henry Kensinger
Lydia, married to Samuel Byers
Margaret, unmarried
John, married to Tillie Kensinger
Sophia, married to Joseph Zimmerman
David, married to Margret Soyster

This family alone, would be able to have a large reunion, and we only regret that we do not have more of their history.

Henry P., the youngest of the twelve lived a few hundred yards northwest of Stonerook’s school house where he carried on cabinet making, furnishing very substantial furniture of all kinds. He was also engaged in the making of coffins during the earlier part of his active life.

He was married twice, the first time to Catharine Zook. Two children were born to this union: Mary and Catharine.

His second marriage was to Margaret Zook, a sister of his first wife.

Mary was married to Henry Stonerook. They lived until death at the place where they began housekeeping – at Stonerook’s school house. The following children blessed this union:

Henry, married to Amanda Weyant
Simon, married to Inez Sproul, and now editor and proprietor of the Iowa Falls Sentinel, Iowa Falls, Iowa.
Pauline, married to Levi L. Miller
John, married to Hannah Glass
Catharine, (deceased), married to J.C. Frederick
Frank, unmarried
Maggie, (deceased), married to E.S. Shuman

The second child of Henry Burget’s Catharine, was 33 years younger than her sister Mary, and is married to Henry S. Clapper, of near Curryville.

This now concludes the history of the Burget, as far as could be obtained, up to the fourth, fifth generation.

(There are many Burkes living in other parts of Blair and Bedford counties, many of whose ancestors lived in the vicinity of Claysburg. The information we have relative to the family history is too incomplete to warrant publication. If we can get enough facts they will be published at some future time. – ED)

More curious who you are by the question.
Regis F (Ferdinand)was my grandfather... Husband of Anna (passed @ '55), and Hilda. Father of Regis II, John, Irene, Margie, Anna Mae, Regina, and Della... Obviously, only the boys, Regis (my father with 6), and John (one son) would be the only other Burkets in direct line to Regis F....
That said, looking back at my family photo album, there is a photo of another Regis from '75 (about mid 30s I'd guess)who must be related as well... Let me know, and I'll find out more if you need me too...
Charlie Burket

Hi: Thanks for letting me know. All I know about Sophia is that my grandmother, Josephine Lois Gearhart nee Spade who was my father's mother-in-law (my father was George Burket of the Altoona Burkets married to Doris Jane Gearhart-my mother) had a bible with Sophias name in it. My cousin now has it and will return it to me, but we both were trying to figure out A. If Sophia was related to me through my father somehow?, and B. Why would my MATERNAL grandmother have her bible ?
NOne of us had ever heard the name Sophia mentioned until that bible popped up.

If you find out anything else, let me know. I will be glad to share any info with you that might help you in your various searches.

Regards,
Jan Burket

Does anyone have something close to a primary document that would show this father to son relationship?
The D.A.R. will not allow the use of "The Descendants of Jehu Burket".
Ephraim marries in 1849 and is not shown with his parents in the 1850 Census.
I find him in the 1860 Census in Mackinaw, Tazewell, IL.
Around 1861 he volunteers for the Civil War, Co. I, 94th IL Infantry and his wives Pension Application leads me to believe he was killed or died 24 Nov 1863, maybe in Texas. I have applied for his full military record.
I have sent for any Court House records at Warsaw, Kosciusko County, IN where he father passed away.
Any help would be appreciated.
Truman Nicholas
Colotop@aol.com

Lisa Cooke
Do you have a document that would show that Ephraim Burkett(1825-1863) was the son of Nathaniel(1794-1863)? The D.A.R. will not accept "The Descendants of Jehu Burkhard"!!!?
I am hard pressed for a document that proves the relationship.
Any info on Ephraim Burkett and wife Sarah Jane Hartman would be appreciated.
Truman Nicholas Colotop@aol.com

The D.A.R. will not accept "The Descendants of Jehu Burkhard"!!!?
I am hard pressed for a document that proves the relationship.
Any info on Ephraim Burkett and wife Sarah Jane Hartman would be appreciated.
Truman Nicholas Colotop@aol.com

It may be that she was a close friend or student. My mother told me that Sophia never married (Forget the Ward person) and that she became a school pricipal in the Altoona schools. Maybe that's how she got it?

You're right. Sophia Burket grew up in Greenfield Twp., PA. The same area I grew up in. Her parents are George Burket and Elizabeth Mock. Her first name is actually Harriet (she used her middle name). Her spouse is James Ward, but I just discovered this and will try to find out more.

You may be a long lost relative!!! After diving into this
"ancestry" site, I've become obsessed!

Please feel free to e-mail me if you have anymore info. The information I have is under "Smith Family Tree".

HI there,

My 3rd Great Grandfather was Samuel Curl and he married Barbara Burket. They were married around about 1820 to 1825 in Bedford County. Possibly in Greenfield TWP or St. Clair TWP. They moved to North Woodberry TWP and were living there in 1850. I believe her father was Samuel Burket. Samuel Curl was born about 1800 and Barbara Burket was born about 1802. Do you think her father Samuel Burket was a brother to John?

Thanks Suzanne

Nicholas Burkitt/Burket/Burkett of PA -or- OH?

My g-gf, Nicholas Burkett is on my GF (Charles)'s death certificate as being born in PA. However, on the Family Search site, they have him as being born in OH (in 1820). How accurate would the information be on his son's death certificate? It's the same situation with Nicholas' wife, Mary Leonard. She's on her son's death certificate as being from Maryland, but the Family Search info says NC. My GF was born in Indiana and I found Nicholas and Mary Ann on the 1850 and 1880 censuses in IN and I found their marriage info (June 30, 1849 - Elkhart County Indiana). He's been fairly easy to pick out in the census info because he owned a sawmill. I want to find out who his parents are, yy. How accurate is the information on the death certificates?
