The family story was he was ostracized because he married Margaret Otterman, who was not a catholic. Supposedly he never heard from anyone in his family ever again. But another family story is an Aunt and Uncle of mine who was running the McCormick's farm outside Chicago ran into a Burkart but never stayed in contact.

No I cannot confirm that Benedict was ostracized. Most of what I know about Dionysius's family was supplied by the Ohio descendants of Ambrose who was Benedict's older brother.

Michael, sorry for replying so late. Thanks for the information. I have a question, I understand that Benedict was ostracized from the family for marrying outside of the catholic church. Can verify that?

I am looking for Louis Burkart's father who was listed as Joe Burkart on Louis' wedding certificate record. Louis' mother's maiden name was unknown. One of the witnesses was Clara Burkart. Both Louis and Clara's residence were listed as West Unity, Ohio. I am guessing that Joe Burkart was also from West Unity, Ohio and Clara was probably Louis' sister. The other witness was the brother of the bride, Sarah C Rupley. Louis was born about 1874 in Ohio. I am guessing that Joe would have been born around 1850's. I don't know where yet. If any one can help me I would be grateful. Thank you Sherri Luce tryingtobelikejesus2@gmail.com.

Jack Andrew Burkart: First name is John. Clementine's surname is Bourdour. John would be my great uncle as his sister Lucia Kathryn is my great grandmother. Clementine's parents are Louis Boudour and Rose Rodergus, both born in Belgium. John and Clementine's daughters Roseanna Burkart b: 31 Oct 1925 in MI. She died o4 Nov 2000 in Ferndale, MI.
Patrice M Burkart: b: 1929 in MI. She died in 1999. I don't have month or day for either one of the girls. the same for the month or day or city. I would assume that both girls died in Michigan. If you need more information on any of the Burkart's I should be able to supply it. Please let me know.

William Burkhart m. Elizabeth Nagle/Naugle

William was born in Pennsylvania about 1820 and married Elizabeth "Nagle or Naugle". I don't have any information on Elizabeth except her name. They had one daughter named Margaret Anna (b. 1843) who married John W. Jackson b. 1835), a clothing salesman in Canonsburg, PA. My great grandmother wrote down the information, Margaret was her mother, and as far as I have found people up to now, the names are spelled accurately.

Any help on this would be sooo appreciated! Thanks.

John,
I was just sent about 7 pages of a fairly complete history of the Burkart family dating back to Deonis & Rosalie Alinger and their marriage in Germany. It seems they arrived in the United States in 1852 and settled in Tiffin, Ohio in 1861. My lineage comes from one of their children, Benedict Burkart who married Margaret Ann Otterman on 10/24/1865. I would love to share this info with you if you are still interested. 2003 was a long time ago.
Ah whose daughter, Bev Brand or Barb? I had seen there was another work in progress on the Burkert family tree with Aunt Mary's info posted. It seems that that I remember Bev's side was doing that research. Floyd was a safety director for Gateway trucking and participated in the trucking rodeos around the country. Was quite a sight to watch them. Dad and Floyd were physical opposites, George was hefty and Floyd looked like a bean pole next to him. I am in contact with a cousin in Rockford (from their sister's side) who is going to check out an old family Bible. Hope this helps a bit. Nancy ps where are you located at may I ask? Is Barb and Bev still alive?

I have been able to construct a family group with census records and death records. Below is the family group:

Here is my Burkart (Burkhart, Burkard, Burkheart, Burkhardt) family:

John Burkart b.c. 1815 Germany
Pauline Burkart b.c. 1818 Germany
Frances Burkart b.c. 1841 Germany
August Burkart b.c. 1843 Germany
Leopold Burkart b.c. 1846 Germany
Joseph Burkart b.c. 1850-1852 Germany or Ohio
Caroline Burkart b.c. 1856 Ohio
Charles Burkart b.c. 1855 Ohio) family:

John and Pauline were in Cincinnati for a short time, and then went to Hamilton, Butler Co., where they lived the rest of there lives. Joseph, Frances (married Fey) and Caroline (married Grimm) also lived and died in Butler Co., Ohio. Tom and Charles supposedly 'went west', I am assuming west of Ohio, and I have found nothing on Leopold yet. If anything rings a bell, please feel free to ask any questions. Thanks Tina Burkart Gibson tinamarie7@juno.om

I have a book entitled "History of York County, Penn., Illustrated 1886" by John Gibson, Historical Editor, and there is an article in the book about a J. De Burkarte. Most of the dates are from 1760-1800's. If anyone would like a copy of this article you can contact me at Hitchheick@aol.com

Hello Tina. I am Jean Burkart in Cold Spring, KY and am researching the Burkarts.

The earliest Burkart I have is August Burkart (1838 - 1907)who married Barbara Stephany (1838 - 1836. They had seven children: Charles, John, Rose, Mathilda, Louis, Catherine, Joseph.

I don't know where August or Barbara lived but they are buried in Wilder, KY (about 5 miles south of Cincinnati).

If you think there is a relationship I would be happy to send you what I have.

I have two August Burkarts in my database. August Sr. (1835 -1907) arrived in US in 1852 at age 16 and settled in Newport, KY (just across the river from Cincinnati, OH). His father was Ignas and mother was Theresia. He had a sister Dergal (b. 1838). I suspect that August Sr. may have had other siblings. August Jr. remained a bachelor.

August Sr. married M. Barbara Stephany.

Do any of the above dates or names mesh with your Burkarts?

I have a John B. Burkart -- b. 1863 d. 12/7/1937 in Campbell County. He was married to a Mary A. Fairbank and was the son of August Burkart and Barbara Stephany. It doesn't look like there is any connection here.

I was hoping I could link a brother to August but have since found emigration records indicating he came over from Germany with a sister (Dergal) and parents (Ignaz Burkart and Mary Elizabeth Wolfzorn) in 1852. Info regarding Dergal is minimal. She was listed on the ship's passenger list. Period. It is like she dropped off the face of the earth!

Thanks for replying and happy hunting.

Hi Carolyn,

Thanks for all the info on Daniel S. That is pretty much what I have as well. I did recently find a divorce record for him and Mary Elizabeth Beeson, so I can now say its verified that he was married to both her and "Nannie" Beeson.

I still have not verified that George Burkhart was the son of William and Cynthia from Meade Co. Or the brother to James P for that matter.

I am interested in what information you have on Ester Jane as well if you are willing to share. I show her as being married to Dewitt Clinton? Burkhart who was son to James and Rachel Burkhart? And dieing in 1883. I also can't find anything about Dewitt after that time. You are her gg-granddaughter??

Daniel S. was my g-grandfather. I'm more than willing to share anything I come up with.

Thanks again,

Lynda Chapman (Burkhart)

My dad was George Edwin who died in 1968 in Westmont, Il., his dad was George who passed in 1946 on the south side of Chicago. Somehow I attached things wrong. George who died in 1968 had one brother Floyd and half sister, Martha Julia Hand Frase Teer. The father of George and Floyd was born in late 1800's, his brother was Charles. George Edwin is my dad. I am in contact with Julia's side of the family also. She came from George's wife, Adora (Dora) not any blood connection to your wife's family. So who was your wife's ancestor then? Am a bit new to this so can get a bit wild. Nancy Burkert Koivisto

Burkart's in Ohio

It is so unusual to see the Burkart name without an H. I was wondering where in Indiana your Burkart's were located. I have a John Burkart who was in Cininnati in 1850 to have the one child we know of, but have no other info about him. We have heard rumors that there were several more children, but have yet to find them. Do you know if your Burkart's were in Ohio at some time? Thanks, Tina

Burkart's Ohio\Iowa?

OK...... now I looked at my records, and I have a John Burkart who had a son in 1850 in Cincinnati. I know nothing else of him. His son Joseph Ludwig Burkart was Catholic and was a wagon maker in Hamilton, Butler Co., Ohio (just north of Cincinnati). In 1913 he and a brother named August lived in Hamilton, Butler Co., Ohio and their name was recorded "Burkhart". As of June 27, 1913 August had moved on to Iowa (Same state as yours !!), but I have no idea where. There were stories of at least two other brothers (Tom? and Charles?) who went 'west'. West of Ohio leaves a large area to cover. One other thing I did not mention before is that I have heard that John's wife's name was Pauline, but I have no proof, just a name. Does any of this sound familiar? (If so maybe John was in Cincinnati for a short while- or it could be a different family) Thanks, Tina
