The Mayflower sailed to America, I never heard of it sailing to Australia.
We have Bumsteds in our tree. All came from Sussex England

First could you tell me who Frank Leach is?.
We were in touch a few years ago, when I first began the research on behalf of Clarice Bumsted of Rye.
I have now done extensive research. Kezia Bumsted was her great grandmother. She married John George Carter in 1856.
Clarice's grandfather was John Henry Carter Bumsted, born 1855 before Kezia & John Carter were married & he was registered as a Bumsted. Kezia's sister Ann Bumsted married Wiiliam Carter brother of John George in a double ceremony with Kezia.
So they are a direct line. Clarice remembers being told the family story & does have some family records.
Joseph Bumsted 1845, married Frances Willard in 1864.
Their parents were Jane Bumsted 1806 Playden & John Bumsted
1793 Hooe Sussex.
Janes parents were Stephen Bumsted & Mary Watman. while John Bumsted's parents were Edward Bumsted & Elizabeth ?.
This Edward Bumsteds parents were John Bumsted & Mary Coleman. Parents of this Edward Bumsted were, Edward Bumsted 1696 & Ann ?. This Edward Bumsted was a son of Edward Bumsted 1670 Guestling & Dorothy Mills.
So the line does go way back.

Searching for any info on the family of Harry L. Bumstead b. Nov 1877 in Ga. and wife Mary Emma Lillard b. Mar 1876 in Tn. d. Dec 1966 in Harris Co., Tx. They had a daughter, Willie Mae b. abt. 1905 (place ?) who married Lyndon Emil Eckhoff (b. May 1905 MO d. Jul 1979 Tx.) Lyndon and Willie Mae may of divorced in 1942 in Polk Co., Fl. Lyndon and Willie Mae had a son Lynn Eckhoff. He gave the info on the death cert of Mary Emma Lillard Bumstead. Any info appreciated.

Hi,My name is Keith Roberts.Richard Bumstead is also my gggrandfather thro' my mother Gladys Bumstead.I'm afraid I do not have any more information than you about William Edward except he may have had a son,Johnathon.It is just nice to know that somebody else is researching the Bumstead tree.

Hi there,
I have Bumsteads going back many generations in Suffolk, England and they finally settled in Ipswich Suffolk where Gorge Bumstead married Sophia Brown.

Does this ring any bells, let me know and I can always let you see my public tree, if you key in George Bumstead it will take you back a fair way!

I'd like to know what family Beckie Bumstead belongs to.

She is found on a Texas death certificate -- and all Bumsteads in Texas I know of are cousins of mine, descendants of Mourad Whitfield Bumstead of New Jersey.

Here is what I have discovered:

death certificate:
Beckie Bumstead, white, female, married.
bir. Jul 28, 1902, LA
lived South Dayton, Liberty cty, TX
dea. Sep 20 1963, Dayton, Liberty cty
burial same day in Old Hardin Cemetery, Kountze, Hardin cty, TX

parents -- Elijah Maflin and Jula (?) Haley

informant: "Robert Fowler; son"

she died of an automobile accident -- "multiple fractured ribs with hemothorax; multiple fractures both femurs; probably internal injuries" (?? you think ??)

the accident occurred at 3:00 p.m. on "Old Wallisville Rd." in Liberty. She lived for six hours before she died in the Dayton hospital.

I'd like to know who she was married to. I find no records for them and I can't find her parents and family in the census -- no Elijah Maflin in the census -- and no one that fits even using Soundex. I only find two Maflins in SSDI and both are in NY. I assumed she was first married to a FOWLER since her son was Robert Fowler, of Dayton. I assume her son was born no earlier than about 1920 since she was born 1902. I can find no Raymond FOWLER on the census born within that time frame with a mother named Becky or Rebecca.

Hello, I am a direct descendant of John Dickinson, b. 22 May 1787 in Bethpage, Long Island, NY, and his wife Ruth Bumstead, born 1794, location unknown. Ruth Bumstead died on 05 Jun 1871 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, USA. I do not know who her parents are or anything else about her. Hoping someone might know more information about her place of birth and family members. I am assuming that she was born in New York, as that is where John Dickinson was born and died.

I am looking for the origin of the BUMSTEAD surname. There were numerous Bumsteads in ear;y colonial America in New York and Connecticut and I am researching them.
Does anyone know if the Bumstead surname has any relation to the Bumstead area in Essex county?

Hi Marion,

thanks for the tip of Frederick Francis Lee, this is a strong possibility, as Elizabeth may well have been using the surname Lee in 1877, although we know she reverted to calling herself "Bumstead spinster" on her 2nd marriage certificate.

The FFF that married Elizabeth was from Chiswick. My FFF had a row with his brother over a china teapot, which ended up in a libel case going to court over one brother calling the other illegitimate. Ultimately, the Judge threw the case out of court. We dont know if this brother was Alfred, or another child not flagged up on any of the Census.

Any more information you have on this batch of Farrington's would be very welcome!

I am sorry, Frederick Francis Farrington himself never knew about his true paternal lineage until he had already registered births of several children and got married under the wrong name. He never had a birth certificate, Elizabeth was either unwilling or unable to give him the specifics as he had to check the records at Somerset House himself 90 years ago. But could only find the records of his mother's marriages.

I have obtained some more information since my original post, hopefully this may shed some more light:

Possible locations are:

Hastings
Pancras
Islington
Shadwell
Chiswick
possibly anywhere else in London,
Lancashire or Yorkshire.

We believe he was born between 1870 - 7 Sept 1880.

Sept 1880 was when Elizabeth married Frederick Francis Farrington Snr (b 1853 in Chiswick,) the boy William Alfred Lee became then became known as Frederick Francis Farrinton.

I have now found Elizabeth Bumstead on the 1871 Census, in reformatory for fallen women in Euston Road Pancras, when in truth she was 15 years of age, but claimed to be 17. This has raised the possibility of previous pregnancies before marriage, most likely a Lizzie Bumstead recorded in Jul-Aug-Sep 1872 in Islington.

The Enumerators book for 1881 shows the family living at 47 Richard St, St George In The East, with the head and ages and genders amended, but quoting the correct birth locations ie Chiswick and Hastings and occupations occupations of "Carman" for both Father and Son, but the son's age is given as 11 or 17 depending how you read the handwriting, indicating that is possible he may have been born as early as 1870, which could explain why Elizabeth was in the reformatory.

I believe that she returned to Hastings purely to get married to William Alfred Lee in 1873.

The address given on the marriage certificate for both Elizabeth & William, was 14 Alfred Street. This address does not appear for any Bumstead family members for any recorded censuses, however it appears that an number of different "lodgers" appear. I reckon there is a good possibility that Elizabeth was already pregnant with Frederick Francis Farrington (aka William Alfred Lee) and was not permitted to stay at her father's address before the wedding.

However, I don't believe they actually lived there for any period before or after the wedding, as the wedding certificate quotes William Alfred Lee's occupation as "Dyer". I cannot find any Wool or Cotton mills in the Sussex area at all. Using the Find My Past occupation searches, there are some Dyers in London, but loads in Yorkshire and Lancashire, which is totally unhelpful.

The 1891 Census has Elizabeth, her second husband, my FFF and two other children Alfred & Augusta living at 12 Scales Road Tottenham Middlesex. My FFF is passed off as a 12 year old scholar rather than a Carman, which I believe is an attempt to pass him off to outsiders as the "biological" child of 2nd marriage.

Hi. I hope that this info may help.Frederick Francis Lee Birth Sept 1877 Bethnal Green 1c 285 this could be him as in the 1881,91 and 1901 he is said to have been born in Chiswick. If this is the same family he had a sister Augusta who died 1891 and a brother Alfred. If I can help further please let me know.

Hi Carol,

I am currently looking into my Bumstead heritage. I come from the line of James Bumstead (b 1819 approx) & Mary (b 1818 approx) via their daughter Elizabeth (b 1856 approx.)

I am particularly interested in any connections between Ann Bumstead age 76 living at 26 All Saints Street with my James Bumstead. The Census gives her status as Mother, but I believe she is the mother to the other "Head" James Bumstead. With so many Bumstead's in Hastings it is difficult proving the family connection.

I know that based on Census information this Ann Bumstead was widowed prior to the 1841 Census and had another Hastings family called "Mann" living with her.

My Elizabeth and a "Henrietta Mann" from Hastings ended up in the Euston Road Reformatory for Fallen Women on the 1871 Census. I wonder if the families were somehow related.

Any information gratefully received.

Thanks for your reply.
Have since learned that John Bumstead , who married Sarah Breeds, was the son of Thomas Bumstead.

I found John and Sarah at 5 Trafalgar Cott Pl. in Hastings on the 1881 Census.
Also at 5 Trafalgar Cott is a Thomas Bumstead, age 51, with wife Harriett, son William, and a boarder.
It appears that they are most likely father and son.

Another Bumstead/Breeds marriage:

Edward Breeds (age 25) married Mary Bumstead (age 23) on 17th February 1868, also at Hastings.
Mary was the daughter of James Bumstead.

There is a James Bumstead, born 1818, living in All Saints T. on the 1881 Census - the address is not far from Wellington Cotts.
Perhaps James and Thomas were brothers?

Would like to hear from anyone interested in these families.

I have not come across them yet but there were a lot of Bustead/ Bumsteds in the area for several hundreds of years. so do not give up. I I find anything I will let you know.

hi we just found this site by accident were bumsteads in australia . Emmigrated in 1964 parents frederick daniel bumstead( b 1923) and marjory fletcher grandparents henry william bumstead and mary donovan/bumstead.

we know that in averly there is a field, bumstead mead, the last relic of a bumsted hall named from gilbert de bumsted ad turrim who seems to have been accompanied by bumstead men of breton descent (1206)
I remember being taken to a church in hastings and shown my fathers uncles names on the war memorial .
mary bumstead would go to hastings to visit family.
