Kylie,
Did you ever get an answer about your gGrandfather Stephen G.Bumstead? I've tried some other bits of this thread, but not yours, so I thought I'd give it a try.
FreeBMD says Stephen G's parents married in 1897, and so his father Stephen was probably one of two Stephen Bumsteads in Hastings, born in 1871 and 1870 respectively who are recorded in the 1881 census. The two possible fathers were James W (b 1845), a fisherman, and Stephen (b.1829) a tailor. They were 3rd cousins, being both descended from Thomas Bumpsted (1700-1782). So by either route, (if the assumption from the 1881 census is correct) you are descended from Thomas' father, Edward (c1670 - 1702), the Original Sussex Bum(p)ste(a)d.
I have the alternative pedigrees, but it would take more data to establish which is the correect line - ideally, of course, the father's name from the birth certificate of the Stephen Bumstead who was born about 1870.
Best Wishes,
Chris Boyne

Thanks for that. I know that my gGrandfather Stephen G.Bumstead parents were Stephen BUMSTEAD and Helen Daisy RANDLE. He (Stephen G.Bumstead jnr) immigrated to Australia with his brother Henry RANDLE BUMSTEAD. He was born (I think) 15th May 1899 Hastings Sussex. His wife's name was Marjorie Neil SAYER. I have little details like that, but nothing really about his family in Hastings. eg. siblings, grandparents etc.

Kylie,
I suggested you needed information from Stephen Gilbert Bumstead senior's Birth certificate. Actually his marriage certificate would also tell you his father's name, and with a marriage certificate there's little risk of getting data on the wrong Stephen. He and Helen Daisy were married in 1897. You could get a copy of the marriage certificate from the UK's Registrar of BMDs (online via 1837online.com) but you can't get it free and you can't get it electronically. That's why I haven't been able to resolve the question of which Sussex Bumstead line you are descended through.
Incidentally, you are my wife's 8th cousin, and almost certainly related to everybody who has a forbear named Bumstead or Bumpstead who came from Sussex, UK.
Best Wishes,
Chris Boyne

Many thanks for all your help Chris.
Yes, Kezia one is in the direct line. John Henry Bumsted is her son. he is actually John Henry Carter Bumsted, he was registered as Bumsted because Kezia did,nt marry John 'George' Carter till after he was born.
Kezia,s parents were John Bumsted & Jane Bumsted
possibly cousins of a kind as Jane,s father was a Stephen, in the info' we have.
John Henry,s son Fred born 1895, is the grandfather of my daughter in law. her mother being Clarice Bumsted.
Again many thanks for all the info we much appreciate it.

BUMSTEAD from Hastings

Surnames: Bumstead and Breeds at Hastings Sussex
Hilary,
Thanks for your reply.
Have since learned that John Bumstead , who married Sarah Breeds, was the son of Thomas Bumstead.

I found John and Sarah at 5 Trafalgar Cott Pl. in Hastings on the 1881 Census.
Also at 5 Trafalgar Cott is a Thomas Bumstead, age 51, with wife Harriett, son William, and a boarder.
It appears that they are most likely father and son.

Another Bumstead/Breeds marriage:

Edward Breeds (age 25) married Mary Bumstead (age 23) on 17th February 1868, also at Hastings.
Mary was the daughter of James Bumstead.

There is a James Bumstead, born 1818, living in All Saints T. on the 1881 Census - the address is not far from Wellington Cotts.
Perhaps James and Thomas were brothers?

Would like to hear from anyone interested in these families.

Surnames: Bumstead, Mann
Hi Carol,

I am currently looking into my Bumstead heritage. I come from the line of James Bumstead (b 1819 approx) & Mary (b 1818 approx) via their daughter Elizabeth (b 1856 approx.)

I am particularly interested in any connections between Ann Bumstead age 76 living at 26 All Saints Street with my James Bumstead. The Census gives her status as Mother, but I believe she is the mother to the other "Head" James Bumstead. With so many Bumstead's in Hastings it is difficult proving the family connection.

I know that based on Census information this Ann Bumstead was widowed prior to the 1841 Census and had another Hastings family called "Mann" living with her.

My Elizabeth and a "Henrietta Mann" from Hastings ended up in the Euston Road Reformatory for Fallen Women on the 1871 Census. I wonder if the families were somehow related.

Any information gratefully received.

With thanks

Wendy
