Since yur post is so old I am sure you have already acquired this info.

This is a brickwall for me. Nancy (nee Buffalo) Davis b. June 6 1813, d. Jan 27 1872 and buried at MT GILEAD Cemetery in Union Co., MS, just SE of the town of New Albany. Her husband was John Davis b. Oct 22 1814 d. Aug 20 1900 and is buried at MT GILEAD Cemetery also. Next to them is a gravestone that reads "Vandellor Elizabeth Daughter Of J A & N A Davis, Born Apr 6 1867, Died Oct 23 1868". Which gives the inital 'A' as the middle inital for both John and Nancy. Known children were Thomas, Rufus, William, James and Julia. Both William and Julia married into the Reid family. Thomas Calhoun Davis married Matilda Eliphalet Bridges. I have been unable to trace this line past John and Nancy, my gg-grandparents. All I have to go on is that they MAY have been from SC and that Nancy was of the Cherokee Nation.

I am new to this message broad, and new to the family. But not new to the history of the Buffaloe family. I am a the
great-great grandson of Joseph Henry and Alice Walden Buffaloe. Their daughter Lillie Buffaloe married Chepas Cheatham. Their son's name, my grandfather, was Moses Nezar Cheatham. His son, my father, was Arthur Mack Cheatham. I have a copy of Uncle Alexander's and Aunt Bettie's original marriage license. Ican send you a copy if you like. From my reseach, it appears Uncles John and Thomas also married into the Hill family by marrying Aunt Bettie's sisters.

Hi Genie, Here's some info you may or may not have. It comes from a letter written on 30 Jan., 1963 from Mary Hebel Buffaloe to her neice, Flora Bell Minor. ( Mary was the sister of Frank Kee Hebel. Flora Bell is still alive and the youngest and maybe only surviving child of Frank Kee Hebel. Frank Kee was also my father's father by his first wife, Laura Lee Whittenberg.) Anyway, Mary explains to FB that her parents (Gothard and Barbara) first lived in Galveston, near Flatonia when they arrived in the USA. She noted that her mother was a real good doctor. While they lived there, two boys and a girl were born. The girl was named Mary. Then they moved to Wisconsin. Mary died, so when the next girl was born, they named her Mary, too. They lived in Wisc. until Mary was six at which time they returned to TX. They settled in Kaufman Co. and some of them are buried in the Kemp Cemetery.
My sister, our first cousin, and I are planning to go visit Aunt Flora Bell at the end of July. She is 91 yrs old and lives in a nursing home in Solvang, CA. We hope to get more history from her.
Frank Kee Hebel and Mary Buffaloe had two half-brothers named James and Joe. For some reason, I think they may have lived in the Palacious area. I have tons of relatives in TX.
more on Mary Ann Buffaloe

Genie, I have another copy of a letter from Mary Ann B. dated Palacious 15 Sept. 1966. It is addressed to dear neice (probably Flora Bell) telling her that her husband has been dead about 10 years. She says that she hasd 15 acres Royalty in a gas well. She said it pays good in winter, but not in the summer She goes on to talk about various sources of small income she has and also expenses. She says all her girls are working, but in other towns. Three are widows and one has a husband. She says she has 4 girls and one boy and one step-son living and two dead, 10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. She says she lives on Palacious Bay and it joins the Gulf.
Back in the 70's one of my dad's sisters-in-law did family tree on the Hebel side of the family. Flora Bell provided a lot of info to her and she passed it on through a little newsletter she put out called "Our Hebel Heritage." (keep reading)There's a page that doesn't seem to have a beginning that tells more.
Mary says she belongs to the Church of God of Prophesey. She encourages Flora Bell to go to one of the churches in CA and heed the message of God, to read her Bible and find herself and help. (Mary's brother, Frank Kee Hebel, was also very relilgious and knew the Bible by heart so I've heard.) She says that her children are lliving all over TX -- Freeport, Angleton, Houston, San Antonio, Corpus.

Alice K.

Mitochondria DNA (mtDNA) genetic testing

I am hoping that a direct female descendant of Mary Ann Hebel Buffaloe might be interested in having her mtDNA tested. This person would be a granddaughter, great-granddaughter, or great-great-granddughter of Mary Barbara Apel Hebel. I know that Mary Barbarba Apel/Hebel was born in Bohemia (Prague) . She had two daughters who lived to have children. Female descendants of her daughters are needed to find out where Mary Barbara Hebel's ancestry originated.

Explanation: If you have ever heard of the best selling book "The Seven Daughters of Eve" you will know what I am talking about. There are structures within each person's cells called mitochondria DNA (mtDNA). Mitochondria are passed down to children by the female parent. Only females can pass mitochondria on, which does not change from mothers back for generations. This makes it possible to trace back thousands of years to find out where a particular female line first occured. Here is a website where you can learn more.

http://www.familytreedna.com/trs_explain.html

I am a descendant (great granddaughter) of Mary Barbara Hebel through her son Frank Kee Hebel, so I do not carrry her mtDNA. Another of Frank Kee's grandsons is willing to pay for the testing if the right person is found. This person can even be a male provided his mother and grandmother were direct descendants of Mary Barbara Apel Hebel.
Okay, I know it's been several years since you posted and I'm just getting into this genealogy thing. I am married to 'Mike' Buffaloe and we live in Needville, Tx. Mike is the son of Ed and Lillie Buffaloe from Bay City, Tx. Ed and Lillie Buffaloe had the following children:
Sue Buffaloe Brannon - living in BayCity, Tx (2 children)
William Mike Buffaloe - my husband, living (2 children)
Patt Buffaloe Chandler - living in Wheelersburg, Ohio
TJ Buffaloe - living in Friendswood, Tx (2 children)
Don Buffaloe - living in Anuhac, Tx
Todd Buffaloe - living in Bay City, Tx (1 child)

I too would love to find out as much information as possible in regards to the Buffaloe family. I've been asked several times if we are Indian (if so, what tribe and how do I go about finding that out). Also heard that Buffaloe's were French and now I hear Italian. Would love to be able to share this information with my 2 girls before it's lost! My husband and his family are not much help. Hoping I can get some help here!
Thanks!
Lisa

Re: Buffaloe Family

I have a copy of a letter written by Bob Buffalow dated Feb 18, 1989. It is written to a cousin in the Davis family line.

It reads in part, "... a petition by a Sarah Brown and James Buffalo against a Sion Rogers, administrator of the estate of their father, James Buffalow, and Marina, wife of Jeremiah Lassiter, John Davis and wife Mary, and Monroe Buffalow. Later on it states that the petitioners, and his widow, Becky Brown (should be Buffalow) together with defendents Marina, Mary Davis & Monroe are his only distributees.

That is proof that Mary Sally Buffaloe(w), who married John Davis, is the daughter of James Buffaloe(w) and his first wife, Mary (Polly) Jenks. You can now fill in the data on page 56 of the book as it relates to Mary Buffaloe. Now you know your great great great Grandmother's line back to Arthur Buffelow."

The letter writer must be referring to the book "The Trail of the Buffelows"
