Louis "Lepke" Buchalter was an alleged member of organized
crime in New York in the 1920-1930 time frame. His family originated in Southern Poland in the area formerly known as "Galicia", not to be confused with Northern Spain or an area in central Anatolia (Turkey).
His nickname was Lepke, however it was just a nickname and had nothing to do with any family relation. It was given to him as a child, it is a diminuitive in old High German of the name "Louis", nothing more.
