From France to Kaskaskia...
The following is an excerpt from a book an aunt of mine has:
Louis Buyat came directly from France to Kaskaskia, Illinois. He belonged to a family of some rank, and on his arrival took a leading position among the people. The bell which hangs in the church, wose tones were the first to be heard in the Mississippi Valley, was sent as a present to Mr. Buyat to be given by him to the infant church of America from King Louis XV in 1741. His name is intimately connected with the church and the town. From him sprang numerous descendants. Louis Buyat, the first son of the pioneer, was the father of Louis, Michael, Nicholas, Henry, and Joseph. (Taken from Historical Sketches of Randolph County, by E.J. Montague, 1859.)
Louis Felix Buatte, born 1818, was father of Louis Felix Buatte, born May 31, 1849. The younger Louis Felix married May Adaline Atchison in 1873. Mary Adeline was born 1856 at Fredericktown, MO, daughter of Jane Busch Atchison Means, and Niece of Sarah Bush Johnson Lincoln.
Louis Buatte was a farmer, as were his father and grandfather. Together Mary Adaline and Louis had several children: Theresa, Laura, Norma, Jenny, Joseph, Charlotte, and John Walter.
John Walter Buatte was born in 1882. He was married to Minnie Augusta Sneeringer in 1907 at Woodward, Oklahoma. She was a girl of fourteen. Minnie was born in 1893 at Beloitw, Kansas, to Leo Sneeringer and Ada Mary Morris. John brought Minnie home to Kaskaskia, IL in 1909. They were the parents of four children: Ada Adaline (1909), Leo Louis (1911), Lorene (1913), and James Morris (1916). John Walter dies in the flu epidemic of 1917. Minnie was a widow with four children at the age of 21. In 1918, she married Bernard E. DeRousse; together they had five children: Arthur (1919), Donald (1922), deceased, Robert (1925), Georgia (1933). Minnie DeRousse passed away in 1981; Bernard died in 1983.

Henry BUATE; Washington Co. MO
Dear Raegan, Hi. I'm trying to find out more about the family. Just discovered, after ages of looking, the name of my 3X Great, Eleonore Odille Biatt [sic] who md. George W. Larkin in 1854 Washington Co. MO. Julia's parents are given as HENRY BUATE [sic] and JULIA RANGER on their own marriage record, also in Washington Co. MO, on 1/19/1828. I noticed that a Francois and Louie Buat appear on the 1840 census in St. Genevieve Co. Could my Henry be related to Francois & Louis? How do you pronounce this name? I speak fairly fluent French, but admit I am stumped by the variety of spellings. I have tried finding BUAT info online without success, using every spelling and soundex searches, but no one else seems to have them in their trees, so I was very excited to read your posts. ANYTHING you could tell me would be a great help, a gratefully appreciated. I have alot to share on George & Odile's descendants, and add more every day. Thanks, Deborah

Re: Henry BUATE; Washington Co. MO
Hi, Deborah!
Great to hear from you...the pronunciation of the current name is "byoo-AT" (some accent the first syllable). The family is Norman, and a friend of mine is from Brittney, France (rival to Normandy); he says the original name was probably pronounced "boo-ya(t)" and "du Bwa(t)" [(t) means a swallowed "t" sound here] since it is an old name, before much contact with Mediterranean France. So there's that.
I am from Ste. Genevieve myself, but now live in Kansas City with my husband. I haven't had much time to do more research since I started Grad School, but I should be able to dig up some more info over the summer (i hope, anyway). I'm sure these are the same Buatte/Briat/etc family. In another post, i mentioned that I saw an Antoine Briatte of Ste. Genevieve on a Civil War Union pension roll, so no doubt the non-French have had a lot of fun with the name.
I started from some old records that were compiled before family groups were used in genealogy, so I don't have much info at all on non-direct family members. But the name is so rare and distinctive that it's pretty hard to miss, and I'm sure our trees meet up somewhere in that lineage.
Take care! Raegan Buatte

My name is Cinnamon Davidson, daughter of Sharon Kindle, daughter of Muriel Hart-Buatte, daughter of Frank (Francios) Xavier and Clara May Lipscome, Frank is the son of Joseph Sylvester. We are interested in what the name of the book your Aunt has. And any information you can give us. We are trying to connect our family to the Louis who brought the bell and then possible to Jocques du Buat who was the page to the King of France.
