I descend from Lewis Bryan b 2 mar 1756 Halifax Co., NC ((year 56 a "maybe" as Bible record hard to read) d 6 Jan 1830 Martin Co. NC. He lived near Oak City. That area of Martin Co. was part of Halifax Co. when he ws born. Wife Lucretia.Due to a courthouse fire, only an abstract of his will available. His children were
1. Catherine md Lewis Hyman. Her will probated Jan 1837 Martin Co. NC
2.Mary md Mays or Mayo. We believe she died Greene Co. MO
3. Turner, my ancestor, b 22 Oct 1779 Martin Co. NC d 11 Jan 1851 near Mt. Croghan, Chesterfield Co. SC. Md c 1802 Martin Co. NC Frances Caroline Burnett, daughter of John Burnett of. With the Burnetts and others from Martin Co. they moved, before 1810, to Marion Dist., SC (the part now Florence Co.). By 1820 moved to Chesterfield Co. and acquired the land called Mt. Croghan on part of which the town now stands. Had 8 children. Except for one who died a few miles away in Union Co. NC, all his children remained in Chesterfield Co.
4.Silas no dates. In a "Greene Co. MO History", grandson Dr. Edward McBride stated Silas married Margaret Coleman. He may have been in Marion Dist. SC before moving to Chesterfield Co. SC. In Chesterfield Co. his daughter Harriet became, in 1831, the second wife of Dr. William McBride. Dismissed from Elizabeth Baptist Church for some infraction, he moved to Marlboro Co. SC and died there according to descendants - no dates available. Edward McBride stated Silas's wife Margaret died in Mississippi when 80. Besides Harriet who remained in Chesterfield Co. , his children were (according to Edward McBride) Robert who went to Mississippi, Henry who died in the Seminole Wars, Mary (no data) and Jane. Jane md 1835 Marlboro Co. SC Aaron A. Lisenby and moved to Macon Co. AL where she died 1857. Jane's John Chapple Lisenbe (note the ending e) came to Bell Co. TX. No trace of her other children as yet.
5. John b 28 Oct 1788 Martin Co. NC d 20 July 1865, Martin Co. NC Md twice (1) Cherry Price (2) Atha Price
6. William - no data - but dec'd before 24 Dec 1829 when Lewis wrote his will.
Some think there were two separate Bryan lines in Martin Co. while others think they were branches of the same family that moved apart a generation or so before and then joined again in Martin Co. Deed records show they all lived in the area west of Oak City (Edgecombe Co. only 4 miles west of Oak City) and all the Bryans seemed to be witnessing deeds for each other as well as those in Edgecombe Co.
The John Bryan Bible, in possession of a NC descendant, lists Lewis' father as Robert and his mother as Elizabeth.
Oddly enough, in Johnston Co. NC there were also Bryan siblings named Turner and Silas, so wonder if there is kinhsip there also.
