Hi,

I'm searching for a gentleman with the last name of Brunken, who lived in/around San Francsico, CA in 1963 - 1964, and was possibly in the insurance industry. Our guess is that he was born approximately 1935 or so, and may have been married. This is the only bit of specific information I have regarding this person. I have been in contact with one Brunken who is checking his tree to find out if - by some miracle - I found the correct line.

Also searching for the above's son, born in August 1964 in San Francisco. The birth certificate says that Brunken is the first name, and Ratican is the last name. Ratican is his mother's maiden name. The last we know of this child is that he was adopted by a couple and living in the central valley of California - possibly Bakersfield.

If you have any info, or if your Brunken line has any connection, please let me know via message on ancestry.com - my emails tend to go to junk!

Thanks,
Michelle

Friedrick Brunken was my great grandfather. He and 3 of his brothers came over from Germany. Two of his brothers Diedrick and Johann "John" settled in Nebraska and one settled in New York. The one in New York had no children. The was also one brother that stayed in Germany and I think I might have found a descendant of his named Hans Brunken. There were also two sisters that stayed in Germany one married a Janssen, but that is as much information as I have. I have been working on trying to find as many living descendants to update their information. If you would like to email me laurelbrunken@gmail.com

I have seen several Haukenfrers in the same area on other trees. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be a well searched ancestry even though the name seems to be somewhat rare in Germany and abroad. I have found 2 Gesche's and 1 Gebke born around the same time period. My Anna was also born around the early 1800's and I'm hoping someone may know of her.

Thanks for letting me know.

The names you mentioned are very familiar and I have had some confusion with names, dates and no one to discuss the situation with. I have been in contact with Dale Brunken who is the son of August "Bud" Brunken. John Gerhard Brunken (son of Gerhard Brunken and Gesche Margareta Haukenfrers) had two daughters named Dora & ellen who married Schoepfs. My mother-in-law is a Schoepf who lived in the Spencer, SD area.
My questions are as follows :
Gerhard & Gesche had 6 children but I have little information on the following children : Helene, Henry and Friedrich. Any clues ?

My grandmothers name was Magdelena(?) Brunken
and she was married to Hyo (?) Brunken. My
best info is that both came from Germany
seperately, first settled in Illinois, then
Remsen, Iowa. From there they went to
Bloomfield, Nebraska in the early 1900's.
They had 3 boy, Henry, Arthur, and Edward.
They also had a daughter. I believe she lived
in Iowa until her death. As I remember, her
name was Ann or Anna. Kenneth Brunken who
lives in Jefferson, SD has done some research
on his father (Henry) but I have not seen it.
Hope this helps.

Dear Phil, There are many common names and places between our two Brunken families. So, I can see how you felt there was a tie-in. I am sorry that they don't seem to match. We are members of the Mormon faith and one of our sons served a mission in Germany about 20 years ago. At the conclusion of his mission we joined him in Germany and went to Oldenburg. We took advantage of his language skills to do some research and found a lot of Brunkens in the historical records. So, it is possible, and probably likely, that farther back our two families do tie in. But, at this point I don't have any further suggestions.

Dear Phil, My father, August Brunken, had 3 brothers (John born 23 Oct 1875, Fred born 31 Oct 1880 and Henry born 28 Oct 1883) and 2 sisters (Mary, born 1 Sep 1877 and Emma, born 9 Nov 1889). All of these children were born in Columbus, NE. Their parents were Gerd Diederich Brunken (born 15 Jan 1841 in Germany) and Gesche Sophie Meilahn (born 16 Nov 1846). Sophie died 20 Jan 1901 and Diederich married Terese Maxant and had two children from that marriage (Olga and Walter). I do not know of a Richard or Dick being born to this Gerd Diederich Brunken. Among the descendents there were several Richards; Richard Kenneth Brunken born in 1946, a Richard Lee Brunken born in 1943 and a Richard Kenneth Brunken born in 1971. I have not found any Gerhard John Brunkens nor an Anna Spars amoung any of the ancestors. What relationship are you to the Brunkens?

Linda,
Our direct Brunken line goes back to Gerd Diederich Brunken who came to the U.S. from Westerstede, Oldenburg, Germany in 1868 and eventually took up farming in Nebraska. They were farmers in Germany as well. I don't know of any profressional piano players among our ancestors.

Dear Joy,

Our families are probably connected as our line of Brunkens also came from Oldenburg, Germany. But, my grandfather, Gerd Diederick Brunken immigrated to the USA in 1868. He married Gesche Sophie Meilahn and settled on a farm near Columbus, Nebraska where they had 6 children. My father, August Bud Brunken, being the next to the youngest was born on 1 Nov 1886 in Columbus, Nebraska. We would probably have to go farther back to see where our families connect. Interestingly enough, my father was also in the San Francisco earthquake in 1906. He worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad, had a bad accident resulting in one of his legs being amputated, and was a patient in the SP Hospital in SF when the quake occurred.

Thanks for the info on your side of the family tree. However, I think I have some confusing information that I need to sort out. I have in my records, August Brunken had a brother named Dick (or Richard ?) and their parents were Gerd Diedrich and Gesche
Sophie. Next I have Gerd's parents as Gerhard John Brunken and Anna Spars. I think this is incorrect but do these names sound familiar otherwise ? Also did Gerd Diedrich have have any brothers sisters that you know of ? I have a few listed but the dates don't match up well.

My mother-in-law is Hazel Schoepf-Coatsworth originally from Spencer, SD. I believe 2 of her uncles, Reynold Otto, married Brunken girls (Ellen Dora). These Brunkens were from Hallam, Lancaster County, NE as best as I can tell. Their father was John Gerhard Brunken (1862-1912) who was from Oldenburg, Germany. John Gerhard had siblings Helene, Frederick, Henry Anna. I originally thought
Gerd Diedrich was of this group but I guess I was wrong. I have some information that Dick Brunken was a house painter in Laverne, MN. Any ideas ?

Dear Joy,

I cannot find any Brunken's in our records with the given name of Julius. If you can give me a little more information about him and his siblings and other related Brunkens I will be happy to check further. Our Brunken line settled in Nebraska when they came over from Germany. Now, of course, there are descendents in many other places.
