Hello Peggy, I am searching for information on Benjamin Franklin(my GGGGgrandfather) and his Father Andrew Jackson as well. I have done the Ancestry DNA test and have genetic matches from others with Brumback's in their trees but I can't connect them yet. Most of the matches have Martin Brumback B: abt 1735 in North Rhine-Westphalia, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, D: 1794 lost at sea, Silawesi Tengah, Indonesia. I also came across a man named Andrew Jackson Brumback B: 18 Oct 1830 in Spencer Co., Ky D: 13 Jan 1920 in Scott County, Ky who's death cert. says his father was A. Brumback and Mother _Lane. He is the right age to be a brother of our B F Brumback. I am just guessing that they could be brothers. If you have figured this out since you first posted, please let me know. If not, maybe this can help. Thanks, Julie

Thank you for insights. I ended up here because someone on our tree suposedly died in Sulawesi also.

Another example of words popping up when a person starts typing is the HOL vs HOLLAND issue. Many of my ancestors were from HOL, a city in Norway. When HOL is typed in, the country of HOLLAND pops up and there it is forever, so people think they are Dutch when they are, in fact, Norwegian.

Sally
Cordelia Brumbeck was my grandmother. My father was Cecil Irwin. I am doing research on the family. I did find out that Cordelia was married to William H. Newport on September 21, 1897, they had a daughter Blanche born in 1902. She married Thomas E. Irwin in Cherokee County, Kansas on November 23, 1903. In both instances she used Katie Brumback as her name. Hope this helps. Who are you married to? I am Joan (Irwin) Lee.

The "at sea" automatic default of Indonesia is very frustrating to those who want actual facts...my Potts of Wales line has the same thing in 1690 so it's apparently not related to particular era. The comments I leave on the various trees are ignored by the member, even when I offer verification, so that doesn't work either! Additionally, there are too many that have "copied and pasted" the same information in my line to even try and worry about it.

I'm getting a kick out of the explanation in your line...an "unwanted pregnancy" that someone wants to cover up...that's classic!

I enjoyed reading about these errors. My issue is very similar, but does not involve the death of someone, but rather the birth of someone I believe to be a 'mythical' figure. Name is given as unknown Smith in my family tree and birth is listed "at sea" Sulawesi Tengah, Indonesia. Honestly, most feel this listing is only to continue to cover or explain an unwanted pregnancy just prior to the Civil War. I have seen this same name running rampant through other family trees. If they are charging for this service, is there no way to get information more well verified?

Thank you for posting this....it is very aggravating to see so many trees make this same, generic error for someone who died "at sea". In my line, it keeps popping up (without any source or documentation at all) on almost every tree relating to my ancestor, George Potts of Wales (1666-1690), emigrating from Wales to Pennsylvania. How would he have wound up in Indonesia from that route no one can explain when I query them! I wish there was a way to correct this "glich" with Ancestry, too!
Claudia

You're welcome, Janet!

There are many of these erroneous entries on Ancestry.com besides the "Lost at Sea" one....wish there was some board where we could post them all, to share with everyone!

"Iowa City, Wright, Iowa, United States" is one that instantly comes to my mind, as there is no "Iowa City" in Wright county Iowa, nor has there ever been. However, this error abounds, whenever someone types in "Iowa" and the system automatically fills in the rest. As I happen to have alot of ancestors that resided in Iowa, I've come across this one ALOT.

I have one ancestor whom someone else had listed as dying in a "Place Out West" in their tree. While he actually died in Wyoming; several other folks had him mistakenly listed as dying in such exotic locales as "Placé, Mayenne, Pays de la Loire, France" and "West, Nimba, Liberia" (Africa) due to the erroneous info. that appeared when they typed "Place Out West" into the death location box for him, in their trees!
Hi Pat,

Sulawesi Tengah, Indonesia is the location reported for the Nantucket ship "Diamond" which sank in the early 1800's--it apparently seems to have been the very first listing for anyone ever entered as "Lost at Sea" on Ancestry.com's database...
So, whenever someone types "Lost at Sea" in the "death" category, this is what pops-up: (i.e. in place of a city, county, state & country; such as "Sag Harbor, Long Island, New York, USA"...etc. etc.)

As always, many people on Ancestry.com just take whatever erroneous information appears, when they type something similar to "lost at sea" - without checking or verifying what the software "gives" them, as a possible choice. (such as typing in "Long Island" and allowing the software to substitute "Long Island City, Queens, New York, USA" instead of the above example location of "Sag Harbor".)
I hope this makes sense to you!
I believe the "Diamond" was a Nantucket whaling ship (as almost all Nantucket vessels were, prior to about 1870) and I actually do have ancestors who were on the ship when it sank, (and a copy of the ship's log is available at the Nantucket Historical Association - www.nha.org)
I don't think your ancestor's shipment of iron would've been on board a whaling vessel, however!
I've seen this erroneous "Sulawesi Tengah, Indonesia" listed on various other ancestor's (who were also "lost at sea", aboard numerous other whaling vessels, with multiple differing dates) and it drove me nuts, until I figured out why!
Wish I knew how to report this problem to the folks who run Ancestry.com so they could "fix" this issue!

p.s. the correct "modern" name is "Southeast Sulawesi Province or (Sulawesi Tenggara)" FYI- Michele ;)

I am trying to find a record of my grandmother Alice Hannah Brumback, daughter of Benjamin Franklin Brumback, son of Willis Brumback. She died before death records were kept and I can't find her anywhere. She died in 1910 according to the family bible but I'm not sure where. May have been Casey Co. KY.

They lived there for a while but don't appear on 1850-60 census of Clark Co. Did they move elsewhere or died. There was a younger Braumback showed on the 1870 census of Clark Co.
