His father was John Bruce, born 1787 in Northumberland Isle, England and died 9 Feb 1836, findagrave.com Memorial# 100465327.

His mother was Margaret Gratz, born in 1790 in either England or Kentucky. I think she died in 1868, but have been unable to find her memorial.

I've been unable to find either John's or Margaret's parents.

Are you a descendant of John? My gg was John's sister Jenny/Jane. Andrew's wife was Jane and she was born in Ireland. She was either a Lorimer or Walker. Andrew's father was James and was one of the very earliest pioneers of the area of Union and certainly would have followed the Zane Trace trail from Pennsylvania. The family farm is just off of this trail.

Sounds like more than one generation. the last reference I am pretty sure the initials stand for National Archives with the microfilm roll number and page. The others may be reference books. What I really hoping for was a solid reference or record of Where John Bruce came from or was born. I found many references to Scotland without a source listed. thank you for your prompt reply.

To - Gummy_Mommy and Janet Bell;
Thank you for your contributions to this subject. I am a Barnhill and my interest in the Barnhill/Bruce relationship is purely to correct much of the misinformation found on the internet. I am skeptical about "documented" information found in reference material such as books, family journals, etc. My experience confirms the fact that mistakes can be found even in historical documents. I will be reading that book, however, as I have scots-Irish ancestors.
Janet - Mary Elizabeth Barnhill (b. 1808) Daughter of Robert Barnhill (b. 1779) and Elizabeth Carter (b. 1782) married John Masterson Bruce on 3 Apr 1818 in Jefferson County, Ohio. The 1840 and 1850 census appears to be correct, as John's children were Robert, Elizabeth, Nancy, Thomas, John, George, and James. As for the female, 60-69 found in the 1840 census, I believe she is John's mother, Sarah Ann (Masterson) Bruce, who died in 1846. She is buried in Morrow County, Ohio.
I cannot say John Bruce Clinton is closely related to this family except for the given name similarities.
Again, thank you for your contributions, and your interest in accurate research. ~ Stan Barnhill ~

Looking for descendants of John Bruce and Mary Barnhill. They were married April 3d, 1828 in Jefferson County, Ohio. I know of 7 children. erroneous "Documentation" pertaining to this family is widespread in this forum. Admittedly, I have not seen the sources, but my interest is just getting the facts straight so they will fit the timeline. Evidently, I am looking for descendants of Two brothers of John who were George (b. 1803, m "Dora") and James (b. 1808, m. ?). Joel Bruce married about 1841 (Abagail). I am lacking information here too. Any help will be appreciated. ~ Stan ~

Bruce family in Norfolk Co., Virginia/18th century

The Bruce and Carney families intermarried for several generations, and searching for parentage of ABRAHAM BRUCE, who died ca. 1783, Norfolk Co., VA. Charity Carney Hodges, who I believe was his sister, was appointed guardian of his children including a son Edward Bruce, who Charity raised as her own. There was an Abraham Bruce that left a will in 1772, and an earlier Abraham whose estate was appraised in 1711, also in Norfolk.
I would be grateful for any information on this family.

Thanks

It appears that Floyd Lynn and also Gaylen are his half siblings, there father Oliver met my mother in England during the war, she didn't have a clue he had been married or had a child, they had a son in 1945.It would be great if you could get back to me about this Elaine.
