Special to the Reflector
Hope, Kansas, May 12 - There was brought here today news of the killing of Charles Bruce at Crane's ranche, in Marion County, Friday night. The details of the murder could not be fully learned but in substance the affair was as follows:
A hunting party went from South Dickinson southward a couple or more weeks ago. Among the party were Bruce, his sister and a younger brother and a man named Sears. The sister did the cooking for the party. Friday night Sears was talking to the girl and used insulting language which she resented; he then slapped her face, Bruce saw the action and attempted to punish his sister's offender. A rough and tumble fight followed and Sears was getting the worse of it when he drew a knife and stabbed Bruce in the breast and temple, killing him almost instantly. there were not witnesses except the sister and brother, neither of who could aid in the fight.
Sears was captured last night by the sheriff of Marion County and taken to Marion to jail. The body of the victim was brought to the cemetery south of here this afternoon for burial. Sears had relatives living in this vicinity and was known to many.
