Hi Erin, I think we must be some degree of cousins. Your great-grandmother was my grandfather's sister. Boyd was my grandfather. He had two sons, Robert Edward and John. Robert Edward was my father, and he had my brother Robert Eugene and myself. My brother Robert Eugene has two sons, Austin and Robert, and I have two sons, Richard and James. I have more details at home, I'll have to dig them out.

I believe I have a missing Brownson Family tie here. My great-grandmother's name was Crystal Fern Brownson/Boreman (1908-1996) from Wooster/Wayne, Ohio. Her parents were Henry James Brownson and Margaret E. Smith/Brownson. She had 3 siblings: Harry James Brownson (1905-?), Grace Irene Brownson/Schwary (1910-?), and Boyd R Brownson/Schwary (1912-?). I'd like to establish more family ties, so please get back to me!

Like you, this is a little late in responding! Yes, this is our line also. It was actually just discovered very recently. It appears that your Elizabeth Wensley (daughter of Roger) that married Thomas Brownson, is the sister of our James L Wensley, b. 1826. My sister, smithml46, has posted in the past on this board, looking for info. From current research, it appears James L Wensley immigrated to USA in 1830s by himself...haven't found out why yet. One of his children was Thomas Brownson Wensley, my great grandfather. From what research we have been able to obtain, Roger Wensley, died in the 1830s.

If you have learned any additional information, would love to hear more. This family has several mysteries that have yet to be unraveled!
John b's parents - correction Re: Simeon Brownson article

You are correct that John Brownson (Bronson, Brunson) found a line of the family in South Carolina. John b. ca 1643 in Connecticut, d. bet 11 Jan 1711- 28 April 1712 in South Carolina. [Coddington, John Insley, “THE BROWNSON, BRONSON, OR BRUNSON FAMILY OF EARL'S COLNE, ESSEX, ENGLAND, - CONNECTICUT, AND SOUTH CAROLINA,” American Genealogist, The, Number 152 V 38 # 4, October 5 1962.] He m. Hannah Scott 25 Oct 1664 Farmington, Connecticut. [For marriage and dates of birth of the first 6 children, records of Wethersfield CT, in NEHGR 15:298.]

However, the article by Richard F Brownson demonstrates convincingly that John was the son of John Bronson (~ 1602 - ~1680) and Frances Hills (1605 - aft.1680) [See Coddington, Enderton among others. for John Sr. and Frances.] [See Bronson, Richard F. Plumbing the Depths of a Mystery in The House of Bronson/Brownson/Brunson. The Connecticut Nutmegger Vol 28 #4 (March 1996) pgs 553-5.]

OK Cousin here it goes...

I have traced the Brownson Family back to 1490 " Cornelys Brownson. He was born in Earls Colner, England. From all the information I have from Brownson cousins in South, Dakota, and the research I've done, I'm very sure this is right. So the crest you want would be English, and it's primarily green. We have Irish blood but, it comes mostly from the Hannan/Clagg side.
If you want more information, either send me your e-mail address or your mailing address and I will forward what I have. My e-mail is (dolores11@comcast.net )
My trees are: Hannan family, DoloresRosenthal family, and Bennett.
Hi, my name is John Bradley. I have been trying to contact a Thomas L. Brownson and my research has gotten me to this site. I served in th Army with a SFC Thomas Brownson at Fort Riley Kansas and Camp Mccoy, Wisconsin in the Military Police from 1972 to 1973. I was suprised and sadden by the fact he passed away so many years ago and is buried in Hawaii. His date of birth is true, as he was about 9 years older tham me. I know he served in Korea and vietnam with the 25th Division. If this sounds like your dad, could you please let me know what happen and how he ended up in Hawaii.

Thank-you
Lt Col John Bradley, Retired
terrace65@hotmail.com

Re: Simeon Brownson article

There is no Simeon Brunson connection to the Fuselier family in our branch. There are Stellys, Brunsons, and Fuseliers all over Southwest Louisiana. I don't know about all the descendants of James Stille, discussed below - it's possible the name mutated into Stelly. And when you have church records written in Spanish and French, the names tend to morph anyway.

Our Caroline is Caroline Penn Stille. Sometimes the name is spelled Stelle, but usually only when used as a middle given name, rather than last name. Her mother, Marguerite Cyrilla Watts, was born on Belmont Plantation on the Mississippi River in 1775. Marguerite was the second wife of Manuel Gayoso, Governor of the Spanish Province of Louisiana. After Gayoso died in 1799, Marguerite married Captain James Stille of the U.S. Artillery, who resigned his commission and became a planter in Opelousas, LA. Caroline's sister, Fanny Assheton Stille, married Joshua Baker, Military Governor of Louisiana in 1868. Caroline Penn Stille born 11May1811, died 28Sep1883, married John Joseph Brownson. John Joseph is from the line Richard, Cornelius, Timothy,Amos, Joel.

If your ancestor's and your name is spelled Brunson, it's possible your family comes from Richard Brownson's son John (brother of Cornelius above) who married Hannah Scott and along with his son Isaac, drew a lot for the New Carolina Territory and moved to South Carolina where he establihsed the southern branch of the Brunson family in South Carolina.
In fact, if you Google Simeon Brownson, or Brunson Family of South Carolina, you'll find lots of info. No doubt the Brunsons in SC owned plantations and traded in slaves like John Brownson and the Fuseliers in LA. I have found records of African American Brownsons and Fuseliers who either took the name from the owner of the platation they worked on, or in some cases, were the children of the owners with their African American slaves.

You can see the home of Agricole Joseph Fuselier de la Claire called "Alice" if you go to Jeanerette, LA. It was moved by barge up the bayou from the plantation land around Baldwin, and at last time I checked it was a bed and breakfast hotel.

Hope this helps.

Louisiana/New York Brownsons - Information and a Request

Many websites list Gabriel Alexander Brownson, son of John Joseph Brownson and Emma Marie Louise Fuselier of LA/NY, as died in 1875. This is incorrect. Gabriel Alexander was born 27Mar1874, and appeared on the 1880 LA Census with his family, listed as "Alexander". He lived to be at least 6 years old. He is sometimes confused with his brother Gabriel Laclaire Fuselier Brownson (b 13May1861) died infant. This line is Richard,Cornelius,Timothy, Amos, Joel,John,John.

My request: I am looking for further information on Gabriel and his brothers, Alfred Fuselier Brownson (b 3Oct1870) and James Stelle Brownson (b13Feb1879) Alfred and James appear on the 1900 census in New Orleans still living with their mother, Emma Marie Louise Fuselier. Does anyone know if they married or when they died? The grandparents of Gabriel, Alfred and James are John Brownson and Caroline Stelle (sometimes spelled Stille).

I have quite a bit of information on this line and am willing to help if you have questions also.

Phebe Brownson Mystery - Can You Help?

Phebe Brownson appears on the 1850 Census, Brooklyn, NY, in the home of John and Caroline Brownson. She is listed after John, Caroline, and their children. John was the son of Joel Brownson (1762-1843)and Betty Lee. She gives her age as 58. John gives his age as 61. There is no Phebe Brownson listed in the children of Joel and Betty Lee Brownson, although there is a gap in birth order that could account for Phebe. She was probably born in 1793. She could be John Brownson's sister, unmarried or widowed cousin, widowed sister-in-law. Phebe died and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York 2Apr1877, in the Brownson family plot. Her will is listed on the index "Wills of Personal Estate" in New York, Number 4, Page 224, 13Aug1877. None of the Phebes I find match this person.

Has anyone heard of this Phebe?

Thank you for sharing your very interesting article on Simeon. And again, thanks for the information you gave me previously. I am working on the connection of Northern merchant families with Southern planters: John Joseph Brownson, born in Vermont but lived in New York, who married Caroline Stelle (Stille) of Louisiana, and established plantations in Louisiana, while maintaining homes and businesses in New York. Their son John (junior) followed the pattern and married into the Fuselier family, wealthy Louisiana planters. Ditto for some of their allied families.

Though John senior traded in slaves in Louisiana, it surprised me to find that he had sent an agent around 1835 to buy slaves in Maryland. The historical accounts relating to these ancestors in the North gloss over or outright omit mention of slavery. Have you run across any other Northern Brownsons who owned slaves?
Thanks, Mariann Brownson

Hi Wendy,

I came across your name when searching the Family Search data base. you had submitted some information on Alexander Ross and Elizabeth Falconer. I am hoping you might be able to help me with my research into the Ross family who settled in Ross Glen in NSW. Ross Glen was named after Frederick D Ross and I am trying to work out if he was Frederick Dalyrmple Ross born in Ardersier Scotland in 1824 and was the son of Alexander and Elizabeth. All documents I can find regarding my Frederick Ross just have the 'D' after his Christian name. If he is from the family you are researching I would be delighted if you could confirm the fact and would be happy to share all that I know about him and his descendents.

My personal email is bernadette_mahony@hotmail.com

Thank you,

Bernadette Mahony

If you haven’t already seen Richard Bronson’s article I suggest you start there. He summarizes a major correction to the Enderton genealogy.

Bronson, Richard F. Plumbing the Depths of a Mystery in The House of Bronson/Brownson/Brunson. The Connecticut Nutmegger Vol 28 #4 (March 1996) pgs 553-5.

Richard gives credit to Ray and Jean Bronson. They have published at least two books on the South Carolina branch of the family. The second corrects errors in the first. The books are out of print and difficult to find.

Copies at the New York G&B are now in the New York Public Library.

Brunson, Ray and Jean, Brunson Descendants of John and Hannah Brownson of South Carolina, privately published 1991 - copy in NYPL.

Brunson, Ray and Jean, Four centuries of Brunson and Allied Families, Privately published 1988 copy in NYPL.

Even with these books I feel there are still several questionable links in this line. Use online files very cautiously.

Good luck.

Ray (now deceased) and Jean BRUNSON, who co-authored the books, generously gave me a copy of each. Jean still lives a few miles away in Lafayette, La. She hasn't published any more corrections, but I'm sure she can help if telephoned. She is always doing genealogy!
I am interested in Caroline Stele (this name is commonly spelled Stelly in Louisiana) and the Simeon Brownson connection to the Fusilier family. I am a Brunson descendant who lives in Louisiana and I teach Louisiana history. I am curious as to the parish locations of the plantations -- sounds like they could be in eithr Avoyelles or St. Landry Parishes. Could you please supply that information?

Simeon Brownson article

Simeon Brownson Paper

We treasure family documents. My family is fortunate to have access to the diary and a few paper of Simeon Brownson (1779-1852). I recently published a paper based on these papers. The writing of paper provided an opportunity to put some “meat and bones” on the data in my genealogical files.

Simeon Brownson was the son of Olliver Brownson(Bronson) (1746 - 1815) a musician and composer who was the son of Isaac Brownson Jr. (1707? - 1769) the son of Isaac Brownson and probably Thankful Dibble (many are trying to figure how she figures in the family).

http://home.earthlink.net/~preese125/family/slavery/brownson...

Visitors and comments welcome.

Paul Reese
GGG grandson of Simeon

Anything you need to know about Jonathan and Abigail Clark Bronsons family is in History of Southington, Conn by Timlow. Richard Bronson's info. is far superior and contains several corrections from Enderton - I own copies of both their genealogies. CW Dudley
