I'm the oldest son of John J. Fleenor Jr.(listed in your post). My grandmother was Pearl Fleenor-Thomas and my step-grandfather was Frank Thomas. I also knew her brother Robey. After Frank died, Pearl married Fred Dunklee who also passed away during their marriage. Pearl then moved in with her oldest daughter, Charlotte, in Tuscon, Arizona where she passed away in November of 1995.
Frank was a friendly easy-going guy and I really loved him as a grandfather. I visited him in his last month of life and participated in his funeral.

A book, The Genealogy and History of the Brown/Browne Family of Granville, New York & Granville, Wisconsin and Other States of Our Union was authored by Cynthia Ingalls Brown. It was published in Waupun, Wisconsin in 1970. This book contains the probable line of Hezekiah Brown of Erie County, Pennsylvania. It appears from this work that Richard Browne who was “born in England about 1614 came to America with his wife and brother, George in the ‘Mary and John’ which sailed from Southampton March 24, 1633/4.” One of his sons was Joshua who was born “April 10, 1642, married Sarah Sawyer. Joshua Brown had a son named Tristram who was “born December 21, 1672, Mary Tilton.” They moved to Norwich, Connecticut in 1715. Tristram and Mary Brown had a son Tristram Brown who was “born March 17, 1702, married Abigail Parke. Tristram and Abigail Brown moved to “Nine Partners, Dutchess County, in the province of New York,”. Tristram and Abigail Brown had a son Hezekiah, “baptized 19 July 1743; married Martha Young, 3 May 1764, in Sharon, Connecticut. Private in Capt. Jacobus Swarthout’s Company of Dutchess County Militia 1760. Moved to Granville, Washington County, New York.” This connects Hezekiah to the Revolutionary War and to Connecticut. The history of Erie County, Pennsylvania connects those Brown families to Connecticut.

His grandfather came to Erie in 1778, and took up land at 50 cents per acre, the same land on which the family now reside, and where he lived and died. Lyman Brown had 12 children, viz., Betsy, Lyman, Sewel, Lavina, Harriet and Henry (twins), Maria, Lydia, Eunice, David, Mary and our subject, who was married, in 1847, to Rebecca, daughter of Joseph Dippo. To this union were born 6 children-Harvey L., married Sept. 25, 1872, to Kate Killhane, have 3 chidlren-Katie, Annie and Hattie; Barnett W., married, in 1878, to Josephine Ennis, have 2 children-Bertie and May E.; Mary E., at home; Horace T., married June 4, 1881, has 1 child-Maude A.; Joseph D., married June 27, 1876, Carrie Geibel, have 3 children-Lillie P., Carrie R. and Rosa T.; and Hattie S., a most estimable young lady, killed by the cars at the crossing in North East Township.
TEMPLETON or DOBBINS
One group says DOBBINS who died 11 Feb 1870 in Missouri.
I have a letter written by Sarah to her son John Wesley Brown dated May 18 1882, 12 years 2 months and 7 days after Jane (Dobbins) Brown, and one will find Sarah Brown listed in the 1870 Census taken on the 30 June 1870, Douglas Co. OR, Myrtle Creek, listed with Ransom, and 5 children, 4 months and several days after Sarah Jane (Dobbins) Brown died in Missouri. Ransom and Sarah on the bottom of one page and John, Seymore, Margaret, Milton, and Eva Valley at the top of the next page.
So, is all the information on record wrong about Sarah Jane (Dobbins) Brown or is our Sarah - Sarah Jane (Templeton) Brown?

I am looking for information on the Brown family from Lancaster NY. My GG Robert came over in 1900 from Ontario Canada, he had 8 siblings that I know of...James, Margret, William, Alexander, Josdeph, Sarah and George. I think his parents were Alexander and Agness Brown. They lived in Huron and Troy counties in Ontario Canada. They were all originally born in Ireland. After Alexander died, Agness lived with her son James in Greenfield, Wayne County Michigan around 1879. Any info would be great.

Hi, I am also a descendent of James Marian Brown. His daughter Hallie was my great-grandmother. It is difficult to find much information about the family because they moved so much. You can find them in the 1850 and 1860 Census of Owen County, KY. You will then pick them up again in the 1870 and 1880 Census of Hickman County, Ky. It is difficult to pen them down after that point or prior to the 1850 Census. From a distant relative, it seems that several went to Arkansas and to other places out West. I hope this helps a little.

Have not desertrd you. Genology has taken a back seat this year due to a serious fall last January. Broke the left wrist, sprained the right ankle, severed a ligiment in the left thumb and spen a month in the hospital and in and out of therophy. Found your list interesting and will post my finds soon. Many dates do not agree. Are yours from a family source (Bible or something Differen?) Mine are from the US Government Census of 1860 and 1870 and maybe 1850.. Been a while and memory is fuzzy. Also there is ref to a small child that died. Curious where that info. came from. When I get my stuff on line I'll inform you. There is alot and will most likely take all winter. Have a cast on the left arm, so typing proves cumberson. Hope your summer went well and are surviving the unusual heavy rains.
Take care. Your long distant Yankee cousin.. Ralph Brown

Tristram, Lemuel, Lyman and Hezikiah Brown, Erie Co. PA 1820

History of Erie County, Pennsylvania 1884, by Samuel P. Bates includes the following:
The population of the township has been as follows at the periods stated: 1,068, in 1820; 1,706, in 1830; 1,793, in 1840; 2,379, in 1850; 1,900, in 1860; 2,313, in 1870; and 2,152 in 1880.
Early Settlers: North East was the first of the lakeshore townships to be settled, and by 1810 was pretty well covered with a hardy and worthy class of emigrants. Thomas Crawford, with his sons, William, James and Robert, Lemuel Brown, Mathew Taylor, William Allison, Henry Burgett, and John, James and Mathew Greer arrived in 1797-98. Among those who reached the township about 1800 were Alexander T. Blaine, John and Andrew McCord, Samuel Graham, Robert Burrows, William Dundas, Mr. Campbell, Joel Loomis, James Barr, Timothy, Amos and Jerry Tuttle, Timothy Newton, James Silliman, Thomas Mellen, Cornyn Shadduck, Hezekiah and Tristram Brown, Robert McNeill, Stephen Sparrow, Perrin Ross, Charles Allen, John Russell, M. Brown and Hezekiah Brown.
Borough of North East: The land covered by the borough was purchased from the State by a man named Brown, who sold it in 1804 to an Eastern speculator by the name of Gibson. The earliest dwelling within the borough limits was a log cabin, built by William Dundas, a little to the east of the Presbyterian parsonage. In this modest abode the sacrament of the Lord's supper was administered for the first time in Erie County according to the Protestant form, on Sunday, the 27th of September, 1801. The Dundas property was sold in 1806 to Henry Burgett, who converted it into a tavern, and occupied it as such for many years. A more pretentious tavern was erected in 1808, by Lemuel Brown, grandfather of Gen. H. L. Brown, of Erie city, on the site of the present Haynes House.
Religious Institution: The Methodist Episcopal congregation was organized in 1812, with ten members, by Rev. Thomas Branch, a missionary from Connecticut. The original members were Tristam Brown, George Culver, John Russell and two others, with their wives.
Public Schools and College: A day school was taught in the old log meeting house, above referred to, soon after the year 1804, which was maintained until about 1817, when a log schoolhouse was built and stood not far from the center of the park. This was the regular school for the vicinity, and among the teachers who taught in it were John Brown, Miss Leech and Miss Riddle.
Hotels, Banks, Etc.: The hotels of North East are the Brawley House, built in 1883; the Haynes House, in 1852-53, and the Palace Hotel, by Sampson Short, in 1877. They are all well kept, and have a liberal patronage. The Palace Hotel is probably the finest public house in the county outside of Erie. The first hotel -- or more properly, tavern -- in the borough, as before stated, was opened by George Lowry, the second by Henry Burgett, the third by Lemuel Brown, and the fourth by the latter's son, Hiram L., who erected the house lately owned by Miss Davison for that purpose. In course of time, the two Browns almost monopolized the tavern business of the town. Hiram L. eventually purchased the Eagle Hotel at the corner of State Street and the northeast side of the Park in Erie. It burnt down and he erected another house on its site, which was known as Brown's Hotel until its purchase by Col. Ellsworth, when the name was changed to the Ellsworth House. The father of B. F. Sloan, of Erie, at one time kept a hotel in North East opposite the Brawley House.

North East Township: Tristram Brown, farmer, P.O. North east, was born April 19, 1824, on the farm he now resides on, son of Lyman (born in 1800) and Lavina (Shadduck) Brown, natives of Connecticut. His grandfather came to Erie in 1778, and took up land at 50 cents per acre, the same land on which the family now reside, and where he lived and died. Lyaman Brown had 12 children, viz., Betsy, Lyman, Sewel, Lavina, Harriet and Henry (twins), Maria, Lydia, Eunice, David, Mary, and our subject, who was married, in 1847 to Rebecca, daughter of Joseph Dippo. To this union were born 6 children-Harvey L., married Sept 25, 1872 to Kate Killhane, have 3 children-Katie, Annie and Hattie; Barnett W., married, in 1878, to Josephine Ennis, have 2 children living-Bertie and Joseph D., married June 1876, Carrie Geibel, have 3 children-Lillie P., Carrie R., and Rosa T.; and Hattie S., a most estimable young lady, killed by cars at the crossing in North East Township. Mrs. Brown died in 1879. Mr. Brown’s brother, David, served during the rebellion, in Capt. Dyer Loomis’ company.

Angeline Brown married Lacy Brant in North East in 1830. I am looking for her connections to these Brown families.
Merritt A Brown and Miller Horton Brown were half brothers. Their mother, Aurilla Abbott first married John Craigh, and Merritt was born on 10/14/1837 prob. in Luzerne Co., PA. She then married James Brown, and Miller Horton Brown was born on 12/22/1842 in Luzerne Co. James Brown must have adopted Merritt, since he used the name Brown throughout his life.

Terry Foster

LAURENCE, I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN. THANK YOU FOR YOUR EXTENSIVE REPLY, IT SURE FILLED SOME HOLES FOR ME. THE EDWARD BORN DUDLEY IS MY GRANDFATHER AND THAT IS THE LINE I HAVE BEEN CHECKING.MY DAD , "ADOPTED" MARKEY, WAS ACTUALLY BORN WILLIAM CAIN. HE WAS BORN IN THE AYR POORHOUSE IN 1896 AND HIS RECORDS LIST EDWARD CAIN AND JESSIE BROWN AS PARENTS. RECORDS ALSO SHOW HIS BROTHER, AUSTIN CAIN, WHOM HE ALWAYS TALKED ABOUT, BORN TO THE SAME PARENTS IN 1895. THE AGE GIVEN FOR JESSIE AT THAT TIME INDICATED A BIRTH YEAR OF 1865/1866 AND LISTED HER MARRIAGE TO EDWARD AS 1888 ALTHOUGH I NEVER COULD FIND THE RECORD IN ENGLAND OR SCOTLAND. I HAD CHECKED THE 1858 BIRTH OF EDWARD TO AUSTIN CAIN AND JESSIE SHAW BUT IT DID NOT FIT. I'M SURE THAT I AM OVERLOOKING SOMETHING IN MY REPLY AND AS SOON AS I CAN STOP MY HEAD FROM SPINNING, I WILL DIG IT OUT. AGAIN, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TERRIFIC REPLY. I WILL PRINT IT AND RE STUDY IT. HAVE A GREAT DAY, BILL.

Hello
I believe that your William Robert Henry Brown lived at Grove House, Hampton (1841 census) with his wife Ann. Also in the same house were George Tinson and his second wife Agnes. Do you know of any connnection between the two? I see that Tinson is at times described as a wine merchant and wondered if this was a connection with Brown's Golden Lane Brewery Company.
Look forward to hearing from you
Alice

Re: Tristram, Lemuel, Lyman and Hezikiah Brown, Erie Co. PA 1820

Boy am I intrigued! In my search for my 2nd great grandfather Richard Gibson Brown, I've found some information that makes me wonder about him being connected to the Erie, PA Browns.
1. The article you referenced mentions a Brown selling property to a Gibson (my 2nd ggf's middle name).
2. One of my grandfather's brother's name is Sanford Lemuel and sister - Katherine (both names you mentioned)
3. Elijah Huron Brown lived in Huron, Erie Co. and married Rebecca Marie Brayton there in 1819. Rebecca is my 2nd great grand aunt. I've had a theory that Elijah is related to my 2nd great grandfather Richard because the Browns and Braytons seem to be closely aligned throughout generations.

I look forward to hearing more from you.
Beth in NC

Re: John Alston Brown

John Alston Brown, was the brother of Benjamin Alston Brown, Benjamin would be my great grandfather three times. There father George, and James Pike, who married his first cousin Mary Herriot, where all first cousins. There parents were James Brown, who married Agnes Foreman, Zebulon Pike, married Jenet Foreman, David Harriot, married Ursula Foreman, the children of John Foreman, who migrated form Scotland in 1685. John A. Brown and Zebulon Pike were second cousins. There is no Isabella brown in George Brown's Will, I also have the Pike wills. It's lately that I worked this information out. Freeman Worth Gardner, my great Uncle, left some of this imformation about the families of Woodbridge NJ. I beleave John A. had a first wife Letitia who is buried in 1st Presbyterian Cem. in Woodbridge NJ. I have been reserching the Brown family for some time now. Like to hear some imput.
