I am doing this research for my neighbor Margaret Ann (Briles) Davis who was the only child of Orvel Briles and Gladys Christine (Vinson) Briles. Her mother Christine just passed away on 12March2008 here in Greenville, Ky and is buried with Orvel in Corley Chapel Cemetery, in Graham, Muhlenberg County, Ky. Margaretn will be thrilled with this.

Just updating my own message I have found that Alsee (Aley) H Briles parents were Frederick Briles and Cynthia Rollins.
There children were John, Aley, Mary, Catherine & Jane.
All were born in North Carolilna and then moved to Kentucky.

I know that this message is directed at SBroyles. However, on some documents found Henry Washington Briles, has been known to be named Henry Manford Briles. Such as the marriage record of him and Dovey Daughtery in Harrison County, Indiana.

Just wanted to let you know, in case you are still searching for evidence of A L Briles, that I was contacted by someone who owns two of his paintings and was doing a Google search to find out more about him. Abraham was known as Abie to his friends and family. My painting is about 3 X 5. It says 'To my primo - Enjoy, Billy'

I have not had an opportunity to track his dates of birth and death but I expect they would be in the archives of the New Mexican newspaper in Santa Fe.

Thanks for your response. The information I have is Abraham Lincoln Briles, born in Santa Fe (or Santa Fe County) in the 1920's. Served in WW II (I have a photocopy of his picture in uniform) and he did this painting for his cousin, Billy Rodriquez. Don't know exactly when A B died, Billy died about two years ago. I was told that Briles has a daughter who is also a well known painter of American Indians who lives in or near Scottsdale AZ. That's all the information I have, but it came from Billy before he died.

I found her born in Nebraska on Mar 18, 1881 and died Oct 14, 1963 in Los Angeles, California.
I would like to know who her parents are. Does she have any brothers and sisters?
Vesta married Joseph Marvin Hunt in 1899. What date and where at did they marry?
I would also like to know more about Joseph, also.

Strange turn of events here: I googled Abraham Lincoln Briles this morning and discovered your post. You noted that you have a photocopy of him in uniform. Someone by the name of Abraham Lincoln Briles was my father. I have never met him and am wondering if you would be kind enough to send me a digital copy of this image. My mother's old family album has a gentleman holding me as a child and I have never know who he was.

I have Vesta in my files. My grandmother, Josephine, was her sister. Vesta's parents were John Briles and Mira Aphelia Scofield. Vesta and Joseph Hunt were married 23 April 1899, but I do not know where. The only information I have on Joseph is that he was born Jan. 1879 in Iowa. Vesta had siblings:, Lida, Jack, May, Josephine, Maggie, and Dewey.

This is Sarge (George) who administers the BROYLES & BRILES Message Boards and mailing Lists. I maintain a huge database of BROYLES & BRILES descendants and would love to have what you have on Vesta, Josephine, etc., to add to the database. I don't have this branch/line in the database, although I do have several John BRILES people who might match.

Could you send what you have? Names, places, dates, parents, spouses, siblings, children, etc., etc.?

I have lots more on BROYLES than I do on BRILES. Sure need to add to the BRILES part. Any help would be appreciated, from anyone reading this. Gedcoms are welcome, and are the preferred medium for transporting genealogy data.

OK, since I posted the original reply, I have done some more searching at Ancestry.Com and "think" I have cleared up the problem of some of us having different wives for John BRILES, Sr. (b.1816, Randolph Co., NC), and the problem of which children belonged to whom.

I have entered into my database the new data I found (much of which is well sourced) and here is how it looks:

I've been following this thread about Vesta BRILES with some interest. As I said yesterday, I'm the admin for the BRILES and BROYLES Message Boards and Mailing Lists at Rootsweb (plus admin for about 3 dozen others). I heard privately from one of the other posters concerning Vesta and she is sending me some info.

Now to your post. I have the John BRILES, b.1852, married to Mira Aphelia Scofield, in my large BRILES/BROYLES database. The only problem is that I have him as John, Jr., son of a John, Sr., who was married to a Mary Jane MICHAEL, not married to Ann REED. Somehow I have incorrect data in my database, or we're all confusing the different "Johns".

I have a single line from John and Mira Aphelia down through their daughter, Josephine Florence, who married a John Ross RUMELHART.

I'm happy to have received the data you sent, but we need to figure out which is the correct parents of John, Jr., born 1852. Do you, or anyone else reading this, have any sources for his parents? If so, I would love to have them. Unlike some "purists", my database isn't completely "sourced". There are just too many BRILES/BROYLES branches/lines in the country to be able to absolutely document every fact.

Looking forward to hear from you and all the others who are participating in the discussion of this family/branch.

Maximum Size of Posts on These Boards

As you know, the posts here to the Message Boards are "gatewayed" (cross-posted) to the corresponding Message Lists at Rootsweb. The Message Lists have limits of 15,000 bytes (15 Kb) per email message.

Thus, if you post a message here that exceeds 15,000 bytes, it cannot be forwarded to the corresponding Message List, unless I manually break it into smaller pieces and then post them to the List.

Lately I've had some problems with users sending posts that exceed the maximum allowed size. Some users ARE limiting their posts of genealogy data to 15,000 bytes, but are forgetting that headers and footers are added to all emails, and the resulting size is over the 15,000 byte limit.

So, please, in the future, keep your posts to about 12,000 bytes so that the final size of the email is still under the 15,000 bytes limit.

This is George W. Durman, the manager of the BRILES Message Board. Nice "meeting" you. (GRIN) I saw your reply to Kevin and clicked on the URL link to your website. I was not aware of the site; it is nicely done. Glad to see someone else interested in the BRILES family.

As a way of explanation of my interest in BRILES, my mother's maiden name was BROYLES. She descends from Hans Jacob BROYLES, brother to Conrad BRILES, from whom most BRILES people descend. I manage Mailing Lists and Message Boards for the following Germanna-related families:

I'm curious about the BRILES Coat Of Arms you have on your website. There has never been, to my knowledge, any Coats Of Arms or Family Crests for any of the Germanna Colonies families. I have seen one for BROHL, which some have altered for the BROYLES family, but which is not authentic. Where did you come across the one for BRILES? I do like the Coat Of Arms you show, but wonder about its origin.

Listing SURNAMES in the "Surnames" Box When Posting

Some Board users are confused about which surnames to list when posting here to the Boards. The proper procedure is to list ONLY those surnames that appear in the body of your post. In other words, you do NOT list all the surnames you are researching. And, it is important to list ALL surnames that appear in the message body.

The box for Surnames is searched whenever anyone does a global search at either Ancestry or Rootsweb, and users will see those Board posts that deal with the surnames listed there.

If you include all the surnames you are researching in the Subject box, and, if you list "Clore" and the post doesn't concern that surname, anyone searching for it will get "hits" for any posts you have made where you listed that name in the box, EVEN THOUGH YOU DID NOT MENTION "CLORE" IN THE BODY OF YOUR POST.

I know it's not clear what you should type in there, but just remember, it's ONLY for those surnames that you mention in the body of the post.

First, are you sure the A. BRILES that did the painting is Abraham Lincoln BRILES? If so, I don't have Abraham in any of my BROYLES/BRILES/BRYLES databases.

If you could establish exactly who the artist A. BRILES is, you could then let me know and I could post the information on all the pertinent Mailing Lists and Message Boards. Rootsweb/Ancestry frowns on "advertising" on the Lists and Boards, but I think we can word the post so that it's OK.

I did find one reference to Abraham BRILES at Ancestry.Com, in the World Tree section:

Abraham BRILES, b1830 in Harrison Co., IN, son of Ephraim BRILES, and Miriam LOCKHART.

In all other sections at Ancestry, e.g., Census, Birth, Death, Marriage, Military, etc., there is only one listing in each of those sections. So, if Abraham is the one who painted the picture, this could be the one.

If anyone reading this can let us know of any other Abraham BRILES (BROYLES) individuals, please post a reply here and let us know.

Just as an add-on, in case Abraham "could" have been known also as a BROYLES, there are only 5 Abraham BROYLES at Ancestry:
