John, I have done further research, and am very confident that your Daniel Briles and my Daniel Briles are one-in-the-same.

Nancy's maiden name is Kinnison. The spellings of Menison and Minnison have produced ZERO results in any searches I have conducted. The following link supports this claim:
http://www.ebooksread.com/dl2.shtml?id=280006&ext=pdf_ex...

Please let me know what you think.

Sandy, may I ask why you are asking about the VANCE family on the BRILES Message Board?

If your VANCE family has ties to the BRILES/BROYLES family you should state such ties.

What you posted is kind of like asking, "How high is the sky?", or "When was it?"

It always helps when posters give information such as specific names, spouses, children, dates, places, etc.

I'm assuming you are a "newbie" and don't really know your way around Message Boards/Mailing Lists at Rootsweb/Ancestry?

If you say "Trying to find anything I can on the VANCE family", you don't give anyone a CLUE as to what you want.

Regards,
Sarge,
George W.
Hello Trent,

I am the manager for the Germanna Colonies Tree at Ancestry that was referenced in the preceding post. (Am also the admin for the BROYLES and BRILES Mailing Lists and Message Boards at Ancestry/Rootsweb, as well as several other Germanna surnames.)

I have the tree set as "Public". I can send you an "Invite" so that you have full access to the tree even if you're not a paying subscriber to Ancestry. All you have to do is email me your email address and I'll send the "Invite". Then, when you receive the notification from Ancestry, click the link and set up a user name and password. After that you'll be able to see the entire Germanna Colonies Tree that contains all the BROYLES/BRILES (and other spellings) descendants that I've collected over the past 30+ years.

Any of the rest of you who would like the same access, just send your email address to my personal email address and I'll set you up. I'll even set it up so you can make changes to the tree!

As for how Conrad BROYLES (as he was known in Virginia) became Conrad BRILES, it goes as follows. Conrad was the first of the 2nd Germanna Colony to leave Virginia. He migrated to North Carolina, where he received a Land Grant. For some reason, the clerk at the records office spelled his name BRILES. I suppose he thought it too complicated to go through the red tape and have it corrected to BROYLES, so he just went with BRILES. Most of his children also became BRILES, although some of his children did revert to BROYLES, especially those that traveled across the mountains into Tennessee and joined their BROYLES cousins there. Some children ended up in California, where they became BRYLES. You'll find Conrad's descendants all over the country with many different spellings of the name.

Again, if any you who aren't paid subscribers to Ancestry, want access to the Tree, email me at:

GermannaResearch@comcast.net

Regards,
Sarge
George W.
Also, the 1900 Census has him living in the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, in Danville, Vermilion Co., Illinois.

He is listed in Ancestry as Daniel BOILES. Looking at the image, it should be Briles. There is also a Daniel Briles (age 72) listed in the home of Kit Briner in Catlin, Vermilion, Illinois. I wonder if the census for Catlin was completed before the census in Danville. Are they the same person?

He is also listed in the home in the 1910 Census.

They family of Daniel "Bryles" Briles (age 42) is listed in the 1860 census, wife Nancy (age 42), with Children: Mary age 8, Charles age 6, John age 5. Residence in Highland Vermilion Indiana.

In the 1870, Daniel C. Briles and Nancy are listed with Charles and John, but not Mary, who would have been 18 by this time. I have to believe this is not a coincidence. Residence in Highland Vermilion Indiana.

Any idea what Daniel's middle name is? I'm guessing Charles considering his first son was named Charles.

I have seen Nancy's maiden name listed as "Menison" but cannot get any information about her or her family. Have you discovered any thing about her parents?

I have a connection to Daniel Briles. His daughter Mary Louise married Robert M. Kilgore. Daniel and wife Nancy are buried in Georgetown Cemetery in Georgetown, Illinois. i have his Civil War Record and it makes no mention of who his father is. He was in the 97 th Indiana Infantry Co. K. It says he was born in Marion Co. Indiana. Ephraim would have been 30 when Daniel was born so I would say he is the Father. The next generation would have been 50 when he was born. Robert M. Kilgore was born in Scott Co. Virginia in 1844 He was a friend of Daniels in being in same Regiment the 97 th. Indiana. I know several people that would kin . Do You have any pictures of Daniel? He died in Soldiers home in Danville, Illinois. Robert also died in 1926 at Hospital, I happen to have some pictures of Maey Louise and some of her children. Robert in Kin to the famous Carter Family which includes Mrs. Johnny Cash Hope I helped you. I wrote a family book thar told a story about Daniel and his son in-lay Robert Have a nice Holiday

John Briles, son of Noah and Catherine Briles settled in Modoc Co., CA. That's just east of Dorris CA. John's wife, Amy and several of their children died in the Influenza epidemic. John Briles died in Napa Co., CA. where one of his remaining sons lived. There is, today, a descendant of John and Amy Briles still living on the homestead ranch on Goose Lake, Modoc Co., CA. So I'm going to guess that Nelson Briles is a descendant of Noah and Catherine (with a C on her tombstone) Briles. I don't have a death certificate for N & C. There are buried in a small cemetery in Lane Co., Or. One of the curators of the Historical Museum in Alturas, CA is a direct descentant of N & C. Hope this helps.
Jeannette Kingery
descendant of Noah and Catherine Briles
I'm trying to identify the father of Daniel C. Briles (21 Oct 1827-4 Sep 1913) Daniel grew up in IN, but some of the family moved to Michigan. He was married to Nancy Menison. Some sources have him the grandson of Ephraim Briles/Broyles, son of Tobias Broyles. Ephraim was born in 1797 so I'm not sure if Daniel could be his grandson...maybe his son?

Any information would be appreciated.
