Nov 10, 1838 James L Briggs buys land in Lafayette Co, Ms. Feb 1, 1841 James L Briggs patented two tracts of land each containing 39.8 acres in Monroe Co, MS. May 9th 1843 Oxford courthouse, Lafayette Co, Ms. James L Briggs appointed overseer of the Sardonia road from the Pontotac county line to parllum in old field. 1850 Lafayette Co, Ms census shows James as owning 40 acres of land valued at 80 dollars, with farm implements valued at 300 dollars, 300 bushels of corn and 15 bales of cotton raised. 1860 census shows James with 160 acres of land valued at 400 dollars, farm implements valued at 450 dollars, 350 bushels of corn and 2 bales of cotton raised. FRANCIS MARION BRIGGS, b. Oct 1842, Oxford, MS; d. Jun 11, 1920, Como, Hopkins, TX; m. MARY ANN LUDWICK, Aug 09, 1865, Lafayette Co, Mississippi. Mary Ann Ludwick was first married to Joseph W Briggs. After Joseph’s death at the battle of Shiloh, Francis married Mary Ann and adopted the child of Joseph and Mary Ann, Rebecca to raise as his own.
Obituary of Francis Marion Briggs
A leading citizen of the Eastern part of Hopkins Co for the past 20 years died at Como Friday at the home of his son-in-law, J E Skinner, after a very short illness with acute indigestion. Interment took place at Pickton. He was 79 years old and had live at Pickton for the past 20 years until a few months ago when he and his wife moved to Como to make their home with their daughter, Mrs J E Skinner. He was an active member of the Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife and the following childeren; O B Briggs, Sulphur Springs; J E Briggs, Pickton; D M Briggs, Dexter; Mrs J E Skinner, Como; and Mrs J E Scott Midlothian. (Hopkins Co Echo, Fri., Jun 18, 1920).
Francis Briggs served in the Civil War in Co K 22 Ms Infantry known as Pegues Defenders. He enlisted in Lafayette Co, Ms July 2, 1861. Records show that he obtained the rank of Corporal. He served with his company till the surrender and parole at Greensboro, NC May 1, 1865.
