One needs to very discerning when reading some of those mass produced "for profit" geneology books. When I was a kid kid in school I remember how exited my grandfather was when he ordered one for the Brickey Genealogy. He waited anxiously for it and when it arrived he opened it and began reading. The first day he was so angry because it had so many errors in it. He put it away vowing never to read anything ever again that was printed by "those crooks"! Lol. Try to verify before believing what you you read.

I would agree, all Brickey's in North America are probably related. Hello, my father is Edward Lee Brickey and my grandfather is Luther Lee Brickey. Grand dad was originally from Mountain Grove, Missouri but left home at an early age followed railroad work and eventually settled in Colorado and was Colorado,s first lisenced blaster. Any how, back on track, my dad did a very extensive search spanning several years. Trips to many, many states scouring over, county records, tax records, church records, cemeteries, etc. He met a lot of Brickey's and received letters, emails, phone calls, etc. Eventually he was able to trace us back 17 generations. Jean Briquette ( spelling?) was the head if memory serves me. My lineage was through a man named William Brickey, the first Brickey recorded to have sailed to the new americas. Very interesting stories, my dad is still alive and witty has a tremendous amount of knowledge and quite a bit of documentation.

Hi David Brickey, I don't know if you will still get this but I wanted to ask if you could find out if in your tree there is an Edward Marvin Brickey who gave a baby up for adoption in 1921. It was a boy. If you could find out and let me know I would greatly appreciate it.

Sorry I could not help you further. One other place you can check is the Russell county web site. I was using their books to access a lot of the information, not Scott county. Also, try accessing the library of Virginia site and then go to:
Digital Collection
Collection A to Z
Chauncey collection

You may be able to find court information. Also, on the same page, for A to Z there is an option for the newspapers. I have used that and have been lucky. You may want to try that too.

Again aim sorry I was not able to find anymore information, for you. But that is not to say there isn't any out there.

Alexandra

I did not want you to think I for got about you, because i didn't. I was sitting on the floor of the library in the archives section.

My search was a bust for my family. After two hours of searching i spoke with one of the researchers and they told me to check under Russell County. Still a bust. So frustrating.

Ok, so I gave up on me and moved on to you. Only thing I found was December 30, 1828 in Scott County Elijah Brickey and Jane Wright. No parents listed. I also saw on 6/20/1852 Elijah jr. & a Adeline Brickey getting married. Again, no parents listed.

Also, Liddia Vicars daughter of Robert marries Brickey (that is all it showed) 2/14/1821. However, on the same page I saw Lydia Vicars daughter of Robert marries James 4/25/1829.

I then saw the death certificate for a Lewis Brickey in 1852. The mother was not listed; however the father, Jarret, was. Hart, Kentucky 8/9/1852 death date. He was 10 years old.

I found Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Application for Peter Brickey. Also listed was Elizabeth Dunn Brickey, who I am assuming was his wife or another family member.

Nada on Synthia.

Hope it helps. :-)

Alexandra

I do not think Bettie ever married. I think she was a former slave of the Compton's or Berry's. I am wondering if there is a Deed/Will/Bill of Sales with a list of slaves. The story goes she was Native American, but I doubt it. Somehow, everyone is Native American in one way shape or form. After I did my DNA I discovered I have zero Native American blood. If it did ever exist, it is lost somewhere.

I have a wonderful picture of Bettie's daughter, Florence. I know this may sound strange, but keep asking Florence's picture about Bettie. I am looking for some answers. I am heading to the library on Friday morning to see if they will be able to help me. I am going to take your information with me and aks if they can assist with your search as well. Mine, should take less time then yours.

Cross your fingers :-)

(Note: Cornelius was not German) Since 1866 Mr. Jones has
been a resident of Dent County, and in 1868 he located on the
farm of 300 acres where he now
lives; 140 acres of land are under cultivation and besides
this property he has a 40 acre tract of
timber land. He has a good bearing orchard, and is in a
prosperous condition financially. He is a
Democrat politically. Mrs. Jones is a member of the Christian
Church.
(A note here...the Brickey Family was not German, Kezziah's family may
have been)

Elijah Brickey and Jane (Wright?) of Scott County Virginia

This gets a bit complicated. The evidence to support the fact that Elijh Brickey son of Peter (1761-1836) and Elizabeth Brickey is found in the records where Jonathan Lee and John Brickey tried to "break the will" of Peter Brickey. Jonathan Lee was a son-in-law of Peter, and John Brickey was the son of Peter, (John married to Rhoda Shrewsberry.) John Brickey and Jonathan Lee, and some of Peter's heirs, signed a document that they would help pay the lawyers to contest the will. That suit went on for quite awhile...most of the heirs signed over their interest or inheritance (or sold to) John Brickey the land that they received or had interest in part of the estate of Peter. I am not quite clear as to whether or not Elizabeth Brickey (Peter's widow) sold or signed over the land she inherited to her children or what happened that they had any interest in Peter's property. They were all willed slaves, but not land. By 1855 she had left Virginia and gone to Carter Co., Tennessee and applied for a pension for Peter (it was denied) but she was granted land on his service.
In any case, John Brickey attempted twice to serve papers on Elijah, James Jones (Mary Polly Brickey's husband) and Jared Brickey who were residing in SCOTT COUNTY, VIRGINIA(subpoena) to appear in court in Botetourt County, Va. Since the subpoena was by Jonathan Lee and John Brickey, it is assumed that they were trying to get Elijah, Jared Brickey and James Jones to pay their part for lawyers they had hired.
The first summons was made on May 5th 1847 (Chancery Court of Botetourt County, VA. Chancery Box 28, Folder 1) This subpoena (on backside of the document) states: "not executed because they come here after the return day G. W. Salling for Ch. Kilgore" (Sheriff of Scott County)The subpoena states:
"The commonwealth of Virginia
To the Sheriff of Scott County Greetine: We command you to summon James JONES, JARED Brickey and ELIJAH Brickey to appear at the Clerks Office of the Superior Court of Law and Chancery in and for the county of Botetourt on the first Monday in June next, to answer a bill in Chancery exhibited in our said court against them (et al) by John Brickey and Jonathan Lee, and when the said defendants shall appear and answer the complaints bill within two months after the service of this subpoena the said bill will be taken for confessed, and the Court will proceed at a future day to decree accordingly. And this they shall in no wise omit under the penalty of 100 (dollars?) ---And have then there this writ. Witness HENRY W. BOWYER, Clerk of the said Court the 5th day of May, 1847, in the 71st year of our foundation. Teste (signature of Bowyer)"

Then another subpoena SECOND ATTEMPT:
Same wording, different date: April 19th 1848. This subpoena was executed:
"Executed on Elijah Brickey 15(15th), Jared Brickey and James Jones 16th May 1848 by delivering to them in person a true copy of the within----
Hiram Kilgore Sheriff Scott County, Virginia."

Roxann Rhea who is a desc. of John Brickey and Rhoda Shrewsberry Brickey...dug up quite a few documents pertaining to Peter Brickey's will.....there are some documents that are still missing. I believe that she (Roxann) said that she had also gone to the courthouse in person to look for records.....

It is a bit odd that no WIVES were mentioned in the subpoena's, since the Elijah who married to Jane Wright was married in Dec. 1830. Still working on trying to find the RIGHT Elijah Brickey. There were 3 Elijah Brickey's in the census records in Scott County, ...one was 2 years old, then the one married to Jane Wright (1850, 1860 and 1870 Scott County, VA.) and the other Elijah Brickey who married Adeline Brickey....that one has been well researched and was b. 1830, so is too young to be Elijah son of Peter Brickey anyway. I CANNOT SAY FOR SURE THAT ELIJAH WHO MARRED JANE WRIGHT Scott County, VA. is the Elijah who is the son of Peter Brickey (1761-1836) Still researching (need to get marriage record for Elijah and Jane) and trying to figure it out. I have not scanned the documets at this point, but do have copies....I will have to post them at a later time, since I have exceeded the upload bandwidth on my satelite service - won't go into that on here(go figure!)
As for Raymond's source in the book, page 49 and 50 for JAMES BRICKEY son Elijah "Marriage Register of Scott Co. VA"
1820 census of Scott Co., VA. (useless as far as names of wife and children goes) I see no other source.
Furthermore, he lists this JAMES BRICKEY married Lydia Vicars as the JARRETT BRICKEY who went to KY and married Synthia Jeffrey, HOWEVER the Vicars family records say that JAMES BRICKEY's wife, Lydia refused to be executor of her husband, JAMES estate......that was in 1833. (It was JARRETT BRICKEY ---NOT JAMES BRICKEY who married to Synthia Jeffrey and went to Arkansas. Lots of people have added the JAMES to JARRETT....and it IS JARRETT NOT JAMES in the census records. I believe that the two men JAMES married Lydia Vicars, and JARRETT who married Synthia Jeffrey to be TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE. I have corresponded in the past with a lot of desc. of JARRETT BRICKEY/Synthia Jeffrey and not one of them knew who JARRETT's father was....with any proof at all.

And I quote from page 51 what Raymond says about JAMES BRICKEY/Lydia Vicars: " Your author is NOT SURE this is 88(36) JAMES BRICKEY, the son of 36 (7) John Brickey and Mrs. Mary Compton, but he is the only one we know who could have been born in 1797 and have other vital dates to fit"
So basically, Raymond was GUESSING that this James Brickey was the son of John and Mary (Carhart) Compton.....

Nancy
nhough22@gmail.com

Elijah Brickey and Jane Wright

Virginia marriages
ELIJAH BRICKEY to JANE WRIGHT on 30 December 1828 Scott Co

James below, was given part of Elijah's estate in Peter Brickey's (1761-died 1836) will.....and because of that is thought to be the son of Elijah. Peter listed his grandson James Allen Brickey, and was the ONLY grandchild to be listed in the will. James Allen Brickey's mother (Elizabeth) signed his marriage bond when he married Priscilla Gish.
All of this, plus the estate papers and the sale of Peter's property to John Brickey seems to tie these families together to prove that Elijah (married to Jane) was James Allen Brickey's father. If we could establish that "Jane" is Elisabeth Jane, that would better prove this family tie.
JAMES A. BRICKEY to PRISCILLA ANN GISH 19 June 1845 Botetourt Co

This gets a bit complicated. HE IS THE SON OF PETER BRICKEY (1761-1836).....HE WAS SERVED PAPERS REGARDING THE ESTATE OF PETER BRICKEY IN 1848 AND HIS WIFE JANE WAS ALSO LISTED on the transfer of estate. ELIJAH, JARRET, AND THE OTHER CHILDREN SIGNED OVER (OR SOLD) THEIR PART OF THE ESTATE TO BROTHER JOHN BRICKEY (WIFE RHODA SHREWSBURY).

They are on the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census for Scott County, Va. (Elijah on 1870 census listed as Eliza....but it is a male and wife, Jane)

AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED, ELIJAH WHO MARRIED JANE WRIGHT IS NOT THE SON OF JARRETT AND SYNTHIA (JEFFREY) AS SO MANY INTERNET TREES ARE GIVING!!!!

Mary Polly Brickey, daughter of Peter Brickey/Elizabeth married to James Jones. Peter was born 1761 and died 1836. She may have had a middle name of "Elizabeth"....she is in a lot of ancestry trees as Mary Polly Brickey and not Elizabeth. Maybe that is why you haven't found her?

James Jones and Mary Polly Brickey were married April 7, 1807 in Fincastle, VA.
I have only two daughters listed for them, altho there may be more children: Elizabeth Jones married Andrew Jackson Redman and Sarah, no marriage listed.

Mary Brickey Jones was left a female slave named Jane in Peter's will.Found Mary and James Jones on the 1850 Scott County Va. census. There was a Sarah Jones in their household.
Marriage Source: Helen Nielsen's "Brickey-Slinker-Houlette Families of Virginia" page 40. Married April 7, 1807 Fincastle, Botetourt, VA. She was left a female slave named Jane in Peter's will.
James is with Elizabeth and Andrew Jackson Redman in the 1860 census of Scott County, VA. He is listed as James Janes (most likely a typo).
Record of Rhonda Shoemaker:
3 [2] Peter Brickley b: 10 Apr 1761 in , , VA d: 13 Apr 1836 in , , VA
......... +[1] Elizabeth Brickley b: 1764 m: Abt. 1781 d: 1820
..... 4 Mary Polly Brickley b: Abt. 1786 in , Botetourt, VA
........... +James Jones b: 1785 m: 07 Apr 1808 in , Botetourt, VA
........ 5 Elizabeth Jones b: 1816 d: Bef. 26 Feb 1884 in , Scott, VA
.............. +Andrew Jackson Redman b: 1814 in , Botetourt, VA m: 25 Feb 1837 in , Botetourt, VA d: 23 Jul 1892 in , Scott, VA
........... 6 Elizabeth Redman b: 20 Apr 1847 in , Scott, VA d: 03 Jan 1935 in Baxter, Harlan Co, KY Burial: Shoemaker Johnson Cemetery, Harlan County, KY
................. +William Henry Shoemaker b: 10 Jul 1842 in , Alleghany, VA m: 10 Dec 1866 in Gate City, Scott, VA d: 24 Mar 1912 in Baxter, Harlan Co, KY Burial: Shoemaker Johnson Cemetery, Harlan County, KY
I am researching Bettie Compton, she is my great-great grandmother. She had quite a few children, one being my great-grandmother Florence. Those are the only two Compton's I know. Florence was born in 1874 and died in 1942. When it comes to Bettie, I have nothing. I am assuming 'Bettie' is another form for Elizabeth or Eliza.

I also believe there is a link to the Compton and Berry's.

I come from an interesting family; slavery, Confederate soldiers, miners, bankers and thieves.
Oh well, you can't make this stuff up. :-)

This may or may not be something you may have already attempted.. If you live in the Richmond, VA area visit the Library of Va. or if you are near SW VA go to the Library in Big Stone/Wise County. Old newspaper articles might be of some help at either location, along with any death certificates of parents or children

Hmmm. I live 15 minutes from the Library of Richmond. I will print out the information you have and see what I can give one of the assistance in the library. Ironically, I am heading out that way this coming week..took a little vacation from work; use it or lose it kind of deals. I am doing some research on my own family from Scott and Wise County.

Give me a few days :-)

Alexandra

Hello! I'm not as good at this as the others are.

Peter Brickey b. 1814 is my gggggrandfather through his marriage to Mary Craig and their child, Robert Samuel Brickey.

I have Peter's marriage to Eliza Knott producing Susan, John H, William C, and David Knott Brickey - but as you said, this was through family tree connections. William and David remained in the home during the 1870 census. Their ages would imply that they were born from the marriage to Eliza. But I can only infer! Good luck.
Re: Maria Nancy E.B. Eades in Arkansas

My records show that she was the daughter of Gabriel Eades and Leah Garner. They are on the 1860 census (arkansas I think)Albert Parks was a silversmith.
Albert was b. 10 Feb 1787 in Va. and died in AR. but no date.
Leah Garner Eades b. abt 1793 in TN. died about 1860 in AR.
You can try looking for Maria or Nancy Eades in Ancestry trees. I believe there is more information there.
I show 2 brothers to Maria/Nancy, Gabriel Jr. married Piety Brickey (As told to Lula Eades Morrow: Gabriel killed by a tree which fell as he was cutting it down. Death date from administration of estate for Gabriel.) and Jacob Allen Eades married Mary Polly Brickey.
Both Brickey girls are the daughters of Jarrett and Synthia (Jeffrey?) Brickey. There are trees on ancestry that give you more information.

I am trying to find information on Maria Nancy E.B. Eades, born about 1829 in Tennessee. She married Albert A Parks about 1850 either in Tennessee or Arkansas. She had children Jacob, John, Albert,Susan and Laura Jane and may have died between 1861 and 1865- possibly in Conway Couty, Arkansas.
