I was a witness to your fathers crash on 28-Nov-68 at DaNang Air Base. The F-4 Phantom came to rest approximately 75 feet in front of me at the edge of the taxiway. I was stationed with the Navy Fleet Air Support Unit in 68/69. I attempted to rescue him but it too late. I have carried this memory through out my life. I have always wished that I could have know this brave man - He stayed with his plane and I believe this action gave the co-pilot time to eject. I found your posting while searching for the name of the co-pilot. I recieved an accommodation from the Air Force for my efforts to rescue the co-pilot but have never been able to find out his name or if he survived. I hope I am not causing you or your family members any more pain but if you would like to discuss this event please feel free to contact me.
I am so very sorry for your loss.
My very best regards,
Steven Smelser
liveoak@q.com
520 378 7288
Karen: Laird was my hero. We lived about half a block away from each other in the Alameda Grade School district. I was about 8 years younger. I went to all the Grant Hi football practices with him and all the games. I also went to Oregon State and was a Sigma Nu. I became a pilot as well only in the Marine Corps. I went to see him when we were both in the service. He was stationed in Florida at the time. I probably was in Navy flight school (Pensacola). He was someone I always looked up to. He was like his father- very quiet, self assured and strong inside and out. You can be quite proud of him. He was a great guy. Very best regards, Kaye Manchester

Just recently published third edition of my book "John Brattain (1720-1784) First American Brattain and his Descendants. It is over 190 pages long with 24 chapters starting with John Brattain and ends with a chapter on the Brattains who were head of households in the 1930 census. It also has a genealogical record of over 4000 individual entries with 430 surnames and is indexed on CD.
This book describes each subsequent generation of Brattains and related families including those Brattains who remained in North Carolina and those Brattain families who migrated to Indiana, Ohio, Tennesssee, Arkansas, Iowa, Oregon, Washington and Oklahoma. There is a chapter devoted to the Civil War where 21 Brattains fought on both sides of the conflict. There is one chapter discussing Walter Houser Brattain, Nobel Prize Winner in Physics, who co-invented the transistor, the forerunner to today's silicon chip.
The book also lists every Brattain who registered for the draft in WWI and WWII. It also has a chapter on Ulysses Bratton, famed civil rights Arkansas attorney who represented black tenant farmers in the early 1910s.
There is a chapter on Alice Gertrude Vincent Brattain's Maori and English ancestors. Those who are interested email me at brattainancestor@aol.com for order form.

Hi, saw your post. I looked on Amazon and your book is no longer available. Do you know if you'll print some more? I'm interested in Hiram Bratton..do not know his parents. He was a steamboat captain and died in 1832 from cholera on the lower Mississippi. He was married to Aditha (Edith) Moore and lived in Kentucky and/or Indiana. He had a son, Wilson R. Bratton who was born in KY around 1830, lived in Indiana and later moved to Texas around 1850. He died in Texas abt. 1905.

Thanks for any info you can provide on Hiram Bratton.

Chris Bond chrisbond14@hotmail.com

Since you posted this a few years ago, you've probably already solved the puzzle, but here's what I have:

I have a property deed involving Mary Y Britton and Julia Ann Britton (this spelling is also how she signed it). They were transferring property in Philadelphia PA on June 1st 1853 to a William Carr. It says in the dead that Julia was a widower; her husband's name was John. Julia apparently inherited the property from Isabella Britton. Mary is her daughter; other children (7 total) Ellen M, John B, Harriet E, George E, Isabela S, and William H.

I don't know it my Mary is your Mary, but you'll see from my name that it's Druley. Eunice, who was married to John Britton (JR I'm thinking) was the daughter of Samuel Druley and Nancy Stanley. If you have some DOBs, maybe I can help match them up a little tighter.

If you have any more info now, please contact me.

Thanks much.
Barbara Druley

Mordecai Brattain born Butler Co., Ohio 19 Sept 1827

Does anyone have info on Mordecai Brattain. His wife was Matilda Huffman and they were married in Butler Co. Ohio in 1847 and had the following children: Malinda, Ann, Henry, Milligan, Rachel, Nancy, Rosa, Robert and Ella. I am trying to establish a link to the Brattains on Randolph Co. North Carolina who migrated to Indiana in the early 1800s.
The only evidence I have in this connection is the Mordecai's son Milligan whose first name is same as the maiden name of Mordecai's great grandmother's Mary Milligan who married Robert Brattain.

Mary rem. to Thomas J. Ross. So we need to know what happened to Ephraim (her 1st husb.) Ephraim Nicholson was b. in NC, we don't know where he died. Think he could have been a soldier.

Hi!
I am making headway on my Brattain line. I have two brothers, William and Lemmons both born in IN. William born 13 Oct 1810 and Lemmons born 20 Mar 1850 in Wayne Co., IN. I found a land record for William stating he was William Brattain Jr. in Farmington, Van Buren, IA, where he and Lemmons lived in 1830-1840's.
Williams obit states that his father moved from Indiana to Lake Peoria(now Peoria) in 1816 then later they moved to Iowa about 1836.
William moved later to Mt. Pleasant, Henry, Iowa and then Mahaska, IA where he died 26 Feb 1889. He married Martha Croxil or Cropstill in 1836 in Farmington, IA and had the following children: Humphrey L., Mary, Lemmons W., May S., and Charles. Humphrey married Cordelia A. Dawson, Mary married Thomas Havener, Lemmons W. married Caroline Seeker, May married William M. Burton and George Beechler,
Lemmons moved from Farmington to Polk, Adair, MO in 1860, to Eden Decatur, Iowa in 1870's, to Lindley, Mercer, MO in 1880's where he died in Mercer Co., MO or Pleasanton, Decatur, IA on 15 Mar 1885. He married Sibyl Cooper 6 Apr 1865 in Van Buren Co., IA. He had the following children: Stephen? , Nancy Catherine, Georgianna, William Thomas, Emma Jane, Lemmons W., and Mary. Nancy Catherine married Joseph Wheeler, Georgianna married John J. Eastin,
Emma Jane married William or M.F. Richardson, Lemmons W. married Mary Ann Hawthorne. I have a lot of information besides this to share. Betseylee Browning(Mrs. Deven K.), 4301 Daisy Dr., Mt.
Hi!
I was wondering if you are related to William and Lemmons and if so how are you related. I have a lot of new information about this family. I believe there is a good possibility that the father of William and Lemmons is a William Brattain Sr. There is a William Brattain Sr on the Jury in Farmington, Iowa in 1837(need to double check the year). Also recently I found a land record of William Brattain where he signed it as William Brattain Jr. I do believe they are related to the Quaker Brattains that you are looking into. I have gathered extensive research on Lemmons and William that I would be happy to share with you. Some of the info is on gencircles.com. But I have recently found William Brattain's obit and grave. The obit is very lenghty but it did mention that William Brattain's father lived in Lake Peoria after leaving Indiana. I also have established that William was a Universalist Preacher.

I just returned from a trip to Oregon and that is why I did not answer you right away.

Please let me know how you are related. I look forward to hearing from you.

Betseylee Browning

Elbridge was the son of Stephen Joseph Brattain (b. 1797in Logan Co. OH or in SC (seen both listed) d. October 30, 1868 Champaign Co., OH) married on November 01, 1838 in Logan Co., OH to Tabitha Fawcett (b. 1810 in VA d. December 21, 1873 in Rushcreek, Logan Co., OH). They had the following children:

Silas London b. July 16, 1846 d. Jan 3, 1917
Elizabeth b. April 1842
Joseph M. b. 1843
Elbridge b. 1844
Lewis b. 1847
Caroline b. 1848
John b. 1850
Siebert Allen b. January 30, 1855
Sarah Hamilton
Phoebe.

I am descended from Silas Brattain (my gg-grandfather) who married Phoebe Fry.

Stephen Joseph was married twice. Tabitha was his second wife. His first wife was Elizabeth Lowe. They were married September 21, 1819 in Logan Co., Ohio. They had the following children:

Rheumamia
Zimiri
Ira
Sydney
Mary Ann
Ralph Lowe
Ruth Jane

Hope this helps. This is pretty much all I have on this family. If anyone can link up with it, please feel free to email me.

Rae Wood

Janet,

The only date I have for Elbridge is that he was born in 1843. I am actually related through his brother, Silas Brattain. I have seen other postings by people who are directly descended from Elbridge. Perhaps one of them would want it. However, if you don't hear from any of them, I would gladly take it. Feel free to email me.

Rae
