I was a witness to your fathers crash on 28-Nov-68 at DaNang Air Base. The F-4 Phantom came to rest approximately 75 feet in front of me at the edge of the taxiway. I was stationed with the Navy Fleet Air Support Unit in 68/69. I attempted to rescue him but it too late. I have carried this memory through out my life. I have always wished that I could have know this brave man - He stayed with his plane and I believe this action gave the co-pilot time to eject. I found your posting while searching for the name of the co-pilot. I recieved an accommodation from the Air Force for my efforts to rescue the co-pilot but have never been able to find out his name or if he survived. I hope I am not causing you or your family members any more pain but if you would like to discuss this event please feel free to contact me.
I am so very sorry for your loss.
My very best regards,
Steven Smelser
