William Branigan born 27 June 1882 in Mooltan, India

My grandfather is Guido Patrick Joseph Branigan, born in Mooltan, India (now Multan, Pakistan) on 22nd June 1881or 1882 and I am looking for the descendants of his brother WILLIAM BRANIGAN born 27 June 1882 in Mooltan, India. Their parents were Patrick H Branigan (Bandmaster of the 1st Battalion Connaught Rangers) and his wife Maria J Branigan (born Byrne).

William followed in his fathers footsteps and also became the Bandmaster of the 1st Battalion Connaught Rangers.

William married Mary (born 1878 or 1881 in Galway, Ireland) and their children are:-
- Maria Bridget Branigan born 1907 in Mullingar, Ireland;
- Patrick Augustine Branigan born 1908 in Dagshai, India;
- William Branigan F born 1911 in Ferozepore, India and died 1912 Ferozepore, India; and
- Kathleen A Branigan was born in Ferozepore 1913 India.

Following the death of his father Patrick Augustine Branigan, at the age of 17 years old (1926), was sent to the USA and lived and worked in New York.

In 1929 Patrick visited Ireland and returned to New York together with his mother and youngest sister Kathleen – their names appear on the President Roosevelt’s Ship List when it docked in New York on 04th October 1929 – Branigan has been incorrectly spelt as Brannigan.

They appear on the 1930 Census as living in (2735 – 110 - 568) Bronx, Bronx, New York. Their surname has been misspelt Brannagan instead of Branigan and Maria whose name has been misspelt as Myad, appears twice on the census. Once at home with her mother and sibling and again at her place of work in Manhattan, New York, New York where her surname has been correctly spelt as BRANIGAN.

I cannot find any trace of them after the 1930 Census. Although the correct spelling of their surname is BRANIGAN it could have been misspelt as Brannigan, Brannagan or other. There is also the possibility that they might have changed the spelling of their surname.

My grandfather Guido Patrick Joseph Branigan came to Pietermaritzburg, South Africa to join the Natal Mounted Police in 1901 and I know that he stayed in contact with William's family after they went to live in the USA.

I'd love to hear from any Branigan who thinks he may be closely related to me.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, Julia's son Hugh is my Grandfather! cool. Can you scan or mail me the article. I have not found anything about Thhomas' brother Edward and until you just confirmed it, I was only speculating that he was Thomas' brother. My address, if you would be so kind to just send a copy (if it is easier for you) is Garett Staley, 9356 Meadow Street, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91730.

I have a line on Edward's death certificate, if it pans out, and you are interested, I would be happy to forward you a copy.

Regards, Garett

I have a newspaper article that my great uncle saved which was written about Thomas (John middle name not Francis) Branigan, my great, great grandfather. It lists all kinds of relatives and neat dates and information.

I need to figure out how to scan in documents but I will happily share the information with you! Or I'd send you a copy the old fashioned way...

Basically the info I have is that Thomas left Ireland on 4/27/1861 and arrived 8 days later. He arrived in Beloit on 5/10/1861. Thomas came with at least 1 of his brothers. I did find the ship log info but I need to find it. Thomas was a shoemaker by trade and he invented and patented a shoe tree. He built/mangaged the Branigan Hotel in Beloit. I am related to his daughter, Catherine, who took over managing the hotel when her parents retired.

He had 3 siblings: Elizabeth Lavery (Jas Lavery)of Chicago who had no children; Richard (never married and lived and died in Beloit) and Edward who is listed as died in Beloit at age 28.

Edward's children are listed as 1. Edward R.(children listed as Ursula Bourgerding and Robert Branigan)

and 2. Julia Gilbert (Married Fred Gilbert of Cayahoga Falls, OH with Children Margaret, Edward, Hubert, Mary, Josephine, Thomas and Ellen.)

Thomas'father is listed as John Branigan who was born in Arnamullen, County Meath, Ireland in 1798!

If any of this sounds familiar, we are probably distantly related!

Sue Cranley

I think my ggranfather might have been Thomas' brother. My gggrandfather was named Edward Branigan, also from Meath Ireland, also with a father named John, and also lived in Beloit. Problem is, I can't find ANYTHING about him other than I think he died really young (1842 to 1874?). His daughter Julia is my ggrandmother.

Hi Sandy, Tom was my grandfather's brother. I have a great photo of his sale barn in Columbus (circa 1914). Send me your address and I will get a copy of it to you. Years ago we had an article about Tom that was printed in the Catholic newspaper in western NE. He spoke about growing up among the cowboys in Wyoming and the other detail that I remembered is the one you mentioned about him being the first white child born in Julesburg. His son Bill used to stop and visit us when he passed through North Platte (where I grew up). My E-mail address is Pbranigan@nab.org. Best regards, Pat

Searching for any info on my ggrandmother. She was born in Pennsylvania, approximately late 1870's-late 1880's. She married my ggrandfather John Riley Cartwright, who was born in Arkansas in about 1885, and died in Texas in about 1941. They had 3 children, my grandfather, John Joseph Cartwright born in 1912 in Texas, Wilburn Cartwright born 1919 in Oklahoma and Adelaide Cartwright born in 1923 in Oklahoma.
Catherine/Katherine died in about 1929 of a burst appendix, either in Oklahoma or Texas.
There's a possibility that Catherine/Katherine's last name could also be Brannan/Brannon.

Maurice,

I'm also a Branigan. I'm from Drogheda, Co. Louth, Ireland. Our family name is fairly common in this area. The history behind the name is that the Branigans were originally a sub clan of the now anglicised 'Owens' clan which ruled most of Ulster, Ireland [now Northern Ireland], prior to the plantations of the 16th century. The kingdom was called 'Tír Eogháin', which is gaelic for Kingdom of Eoghain/Owen and is now represented on the map of Ireland by the county known as Tyrone, again the anglicised version of the place name. I'm not sure whether the name is still prevalent in that area, but I do know that most of the Branigans who are located just south of the Northern Irland, Rep. of Ireland border are historically said to have been driven from their original areas by the incoming planters and relocated to southern areas of Ireland. I can also tell you that the 'real' or original version of our name is O'Brannigáin, meaning simmply 'of branigan'. The name also has serveral anglicised versions, Branigan, Brannigan, Branagan, Brangan and a few more which could also be said to have come from the original such as Brannagh, Brannan and some others.

Hi my name is MacKenzie and I am 16 years old. I was kind of bored so i decided to try to look up my mothers family history, her name being Maura Brannigan (and her siblings Terry, Colleen, and twin brother Shane) She was raised in both Poughkeepsie NY and Alexandria VA. and Her parents were Thomas & Eileen Brannigan. I dont really know much about her childhood and im not so sure she really does either but i know that she was raised in an Irish, Cathloic home and even though her parents had a rough marriage they never divorced but were seperated. My mother never really knew her father and her mother was forced to raise all 4 of her childern as a single mother. It just intrested me in the fact that your fathers name is the same as my grandfathers... and that they lived very close... I would like to know more about my family and if u are related to me that would be nice to exchange information back and forth, so will you please write back email- spike_it_@hotmail.com
Thank you,
MacKenzie
