Hi,

in case you haven't seen this, and especially if your family's roots were/are in Europe, here's a page that has maps for a few countries:

http://www.verwandt.de/karten/absolut/brandl.html

Alternatively you may enter other names on top of the page and see the results below. There are links for Germany, Switzerland and Poland too on the bottom. Unfortunately in German language only, but a map doesn't need much translation to be understood. May be different with the details that are shown for each name ...

Regards
Tilman

I found your post very interesting, my Father's name was Johann Anton Brandl (born 30/06/1926) in Rosstal Bavaria, and his mothers name was Katharina Brandl, on his birth Certificate it says that she was a resident in Rosstal, but shows no Fathers name so I presume he was illigitimate, he talked about his Grandmother who's name was Freda who also lived in Rosstal he also talked about Ernst and Franz, I have been trying to trace this side of the family for some time now so I hope we have a conection.
Regards
Robert Brandl (UK)

Hello,

I believe that the German name for the Vseruby near Eschlkam was Neumark. There is a 2nd town named Vseruby near Pilsen. Both towns appear on current maps. Wscherau bei Pilsen was the German name for the 2nd town. Is it possible that the Vseruby at the border with Eschlkam was also called Wscherau? I have jpg maps of both towns if interested. Thanks for info. Here is a link to a 1934 letter regarding Vseruby near border mentioning Neumark as German name.
http://www.jewishgen.org/austriaczech/towns/vseruby.html

Regards,
Kevin
Thanks for the extensive info! A new piece of Info:
<br><br>
I just discovered that the village that "originated" our family, Eschlkam in 1994 made some "sister-village" parnerships with two Czech villages right nearby --- Kdyne und Vseruby-
<br><br>
Všeruby was called Wscherau bei Pilsen in German. I recall my maternal Grandmother once telling me that my paternal family came, ahe thought, from ther (which I had always mis-heard as "Wascherau" --- which may be a Hochdeutsch form of the name anyway, as this is similar to Swissgerman, which I understand, and "Au" means something like "meadow," but many villages have that in their name in the "Suddeutschraum" (Southern Germanophone Area --- Bavaria, Austria, Switzerland).
<br><br>
So The family probably originated as German-speakers in Wscherau, and then with the troubles hopped over the border into Eschlkam.

I am aware of another child of Michael Brandl and Mary Pfeffer. She is Anna Brandl, married to Joseph Spaeth. They lived in the Town of Newton and are buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Alverno. I have the information from her death record that gives her date of death as 4/12/1903 and 83 yrs old at the time of death. Place of birth is only listed as Bavaria.

Is anyone familiar with a Theresa Brandl who immigrated about 1854, married Peter Braun and lived in the Town of Liberty? I believe her father was Wolfgang Brandl (Brandel) and had a sister Barbara, married to Anton Wimmer. Theresa's place of birth on the census is Bohemia and I know that Peter came from Friedrichstal which was in Bohemia. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Donna

Thank you for your reply.
But unfortunately i have to say, that i don´t see any conection. My Josef Brandl was sure born in 1880. His father was Ferdinand Brandl (*1840), hist father Franz Brandl (*1794)and his father Mathias Brandl (now I don´t know yet when he was born).
Sure, I don´t have complete information about tis family, but now I don´t have that your Josef Brandl (* about 1820) :-( All of these Brandl were born in Seewiesen - expect Josef Brandl who was born in Frischwinkl (near Eisenstrass).
And now I don´t have information about Brandls emigration...I still live in Czech Republic...:-)
Stally

Hi, I´m a descendant of Josef Brandl, who was born in Frischwinkl (near Eisenstrass) in Bohemia in 1880.

He had some siblings - Katharina (*1864 in Todlau (Datelov)), Maria (*1868 in Dorstadt(Mestiste)), Anna (*1878 in Frischwinkl), Ferdinand (*1883 in Dorstadt - died as a child), maybe there were more children.

Their parents were Ferdinand Brandl (*1840 in Seewiesen - Schuhkatchken?) and Barbara Böhm (*1843 in Todlau).

My graet-grandfather married Franziska Urban from Wölsdorf (Vlckovice)and they lived in Reicheberg (maybe in Gablonz an der Neisse - I am not sure).

They had 4 children - Frida (my grandmother), Ferdinand, Julie and Marie. All of them (expect my grandmother) were after WWII moved to Germany. My mother should have there one cousin and she should have one daughter.

Is there anyone who is related to this Brandls?

I was born in this city, and I'm a descendant of this Joseph Brandl. This family came to Brazil from Eisenstrass, close to the bavarian border. I also research the Zipperer family, which came to São Bento from Flecken, Bohemia.

Henrique Fendrich
Curitiba - Brazi

I think not.. my Joseph Brandl was born around 1833 in Eisenstrass, married to Anna Schweinfurter, son of Michael Brandl and Margareth Mundl. Is this Joseph you mentioned from that region? Maybe there's a relation.

Henrique Fendrich
Curitiba - Brazil

Donna - Thanks for the info. Theresia is the same I think as Theresa, as she would have been my Great Grandfather Michael Sr.'s wife. His father was Joseph Brandl born abt. 1820. Theresia's parents were George Schreiner and Theresa Weiner, although I don't have any dates or birthplaces for them.

Much of what I have learned comes from Marsha Brandl who's great grandfather was also Michael Jr., so obviously you two are more closely related. Don't know anything about the others that you mentioned, but if you find more in the St. Mary's records please share it with me.

Finally yes, the other Donna Brandl is indeed Donna Crotteau from Rudolph, and is my wife of almost 40 years. We lived in Wis. Rapids for a long time, then Wausau and now in Charlottesville, VA.

Stally23 - I sure hope that we are somehow related to your Josef Brandl, as many of us have been searching for the link to Josef and his predecessors. Eisenstrass seems to be near Eisenstein (present day Czech town of Zelezna Ruda and the villagae formed at WWII conclusion called Bayerish Eisenstein). Many of these folks from this area (Kelnhofer's, Brandl's, etc.) emmigrated to the United States and seemed to settle near Aburndale, WI. That is my connection.

All we know about Josef is that he was born about 1820 in Austria. His son Michael Senior was born in Eisenstein 16 May 1844. Then Michael Junior, Carrie, Theresia, George G,and my Grandfather Anton came along.

Do you have a complete list of Josef's children that will confirm this Josef had a son named Michael?

William Brandl

My grandfather was Anton Brandl, son of Michael Sr., son of Joseph from Auburndale. My father was Martin and I am William. You can find my family tree posted on ancestry.com.

I am also looking for more information about Joseph, such as wife's name, dates of birth, death, etc., and of course the lineage before Joseph.

Theresia Schreiner is buried in the old Catholic Cemetary past the High School in Auburndale. The grave marker is quite worn as she died in 1887, only 5 years after coming to the states. My daughter and I made an etching of it this past summer and it is mostly in German. Haven't yet made any attempt at translating. My grandfather never really knew his mother as he was an infant when they came to America.

Theresia's parents were George and Theresia Weiner, but I have no birth or death dates on them. Would like more info if you have it.

We also made a trip out to the Pioneer's of St. Mary's Cemetery on Monday. Found Theresa Brandl' s Stone. There is a plaque there of all the people and there are a few more Brandl's. There is a Theresia Brandl and a Theresa Brandl (Schreiner), which would be Michael Sr. wife. The other one I am woundering if it could be Michael SR. daughter, because she married a Joseph Baierl, and there is his name listed also. There is a Emma Brandl, she could be the Emma of Michael Jr., as in my records she only lived a year.) and a Wilhelmina Brandl also. Also a Ignatius and Michael Schreiner, maybe brothers of Theresa?

I talked to a lady at St. Mary's Church that works in the office there and she said I could come out any time and look through the records. So I am looking to schedule a day to do this and see if I can find out any more information.

Now to explain how we are related Your Grandpa Anton is a brother to Michael Jr? Michael JR would have been my Grandpa Edwards dad. Does this make sense?

Also just out of Curiousity did your wife live out in Rudolph WI for a time when she was growing up? There was Donna Crotteau living up the road from my parents when I was growing up and she married a Brandl.

Donna (Brandl) Kickland

searching for Brandls isn't easy, that name it much too common in some regions. The Austrian phone directory at www.herold.at as of today has 278 Brandl entries, there must be about 1800 in Austria altogether.

To make it short - you'll need more information like a date of birth, marriage, etc. and/or a specific location in Vienna to find these people.

Look at http://www.magwien.gv.at/english/history/municipalarchiv/anc... for details an searching in Vienna.

Tilman

Hello,

those of you who read the BRANDL mailing list will notice that messages going & coming through to the list from the message board are now showing the gateway address as the sender and NOT the address or name of the person who posted the message on the board.

This is due to upgrades made to the board system. The proper course of action has always been to click the
link in the gateway post and reply on the board. Now this method of replying has become mandatory as there is no way to reply via email to the board poster. Any replies you wish to make MUST be posted here on this board.

Replying to only the LIST will NOT reach the list or the board poster and clicking REPLY to the gateway post will result in the gateway address bouncing as it is not a valid address for receiving mail.

All subscribers to and readers of the BRANDL list - please be aware of these changes.

Regards
Tilman Brandl

My great grandfather Anton Brandl was born July 29, 1887 in Wisconsin and he died August 1971 in Manitowoc. He was in the 1920 census in another county and listed as a blacksmith with his own shop after that I guess he moved to Manitowoc and had changed to farming. He did have his own farm and my father recalls visiting it as a child. But he can't recall much else.
Anton's wife was Margrate Bonnell. I can't find anything about her out. She was born in 1891 and died in 1965. I did find out where they are buried. They had a few children : Virginia, Loraine, Germaine, Gerold, James, and my grandfather Howard Joseph. My grandfather is buried in Oregon, that's all I know. I'm not familiar with Wisconsin and it's made everything alittle harder trying to locate them.

anton brandl feedback

Thank you for your emails! I didn't expect a reply so soon. To answer a few questions 1.My grandfather is Howard Joseph Brandl born in 1928? in Manitowoc, Wis. he died in Salem, Oregon and was separated from my grandmother Dolores Gwendolyn (maiden name Moore) Brandl since my dad was a child. He was in the army for at least 20yrs. I do have a picture of him, his brother James and mygreat-grandfather Anton at their farm in Wis. I do know that Anton (born July 29, 1887 in Manitowoc) married Margaret Bonnell who was the mother of Howard Joseph and his siblings because my father has the birth certificate. I did find a cemetary online that has a Margaret Brandl born 1893, Anton Brandl born 1887. I'm sure this is the same people because it;s a Catholic cemetary and the only one I found with their names listed with the right dates. I can't find info on Margaret Bonnell expect on the Bonnell message board listed someone named Margaret Lucille Bonnell who was possibley native american and adopted by the Bonnells. I don't know if it;s the same person. No one in my fathers family has had contact with the Brandl's of wisconsin in atleast 40 years. I don't know if my great aunt's are alive but they were Lorraine and Virginia a schoolteacher in Milwaukee and a nun in wis. They would be in their 80's by now.
2. As far as I know from ssdeath info Anton was born and died in Manitowoc. Where I don't know, because I'm from the east coast, but I'm still checking things out.
3. I don't know Anton's parents names. Unless someone comes up with a paper hidden away.
4.yes i did check the 1880 census, but I'm not sure who i'm
looking for , (Anton's parents)yet.

Thank you everyone, I'm greatful for your help, it really means alot to know about by Brandl family and I will keep looking even if I have to check each Brandl family from 1800's wisconsin to present.

Megan Brandl

Hi thanks for the offer of help. I'm not sure which order my grandfather's sister belonged to or the aunt. I know that my grandfather's sisters where located in Milwaukee and Manitowoc. I checked the phone book and there are still 1 person alive and the same age as they are I'm debating on whether to call and see if it could be them or not. They were born in 1922 and 1923 and their aunt would be born around 1887 give or take 5 years.
Thank you.
Megan Brandl

Anton Brandl's daughter

I'm not sure which order Anton's daughter belonged to, but I know one daughter lived in Milwaukee and the other around Manitowoc the town. One daugher was Virginia and the other daughter was Lorraine. They were born in 1921 and 22. I don't know if they are still alive. I know there are two people with the same name and age as they are in the white pages. If you could help find the order they were in I would appreciate it.
Thanks.
Megan
