As Gwynn stated in her thread. My Great Great Grandmother was Kizzie Collins (Brake). She was the mother of my Great Grandmother Ida Collins (McCranie). Who was married to Charley Corbin McCranie. My Grandfather was Marshall "Shorty" McCranie son of Charley Corbin McCranie and my Grandmother was Ruthabell Foster (McCranie).

I have a file with approximately 10,000 listing of Brakes.

I would be most interested in contacting Gwynn and would like to obtain if possible a photocopy of the listing in Gwynn's Grandmothers Bible.

I would be willing in communicating with other Brakes (especially those in Northwest Florida as well as others.

Michael,

It is possible that your direct line is through Elisha Brake and Elizabeth Reasons/Reasoner. Elisha was born in Edgecombe Co. NC abt. 1793, died in Hunt Co., Texas in 1860. Elisha and Elizabeth had ten children, six boys and four girls. Elisha was the son of John (1774) and Judey, John was the son of Benjamin (1750) and Pricilla, Benjamin was the son of Jacob (1728) and ? I have the sons of Elisha as;
1. John (1827) in Robertson Co., TN
2. George W. (1832) in Robertson Co., TN
3. Levy H. (1836) in Kentucky
4. Cyrus A. (1847) in Hunt Co., Texas
5. Hugh Andrew (1850) in Hunt Co., Texas
6. William G. (1852) in Hunt Co., Texas

I have very little information on Elisha's children . Cyrus had 7 sons and 3 daughters by two wives. He moved to Oklahoma where he died as well as several of his children. Possibly this info will help you in your search efforts. My guess is you may descend from one of Elisha's sons.

Dale Brake
Missouri

Hello Jamie,

I am two years late in replying.

Badges and Beans should be available from the Dorset and Somerset Family History Society, PO Box 4502, DT9 6YL. I hope you manage to obtain a copy as I suspect it is out of print. I think it is an excellent read and contains a lot of information about the Brake family from the time of Richard Brake in the mid 1600s.

Best wishes,

Jenny

Kizzie Brake who married William Collins and then John Poor was a sister to my Great Grandmother Mary B. Brake who married Epharim Hasty Hardy.

Kizzie is buried in the Crain Cemetery, Milton, Florida. Her headstore says Collins; however, Poor is also listed. You can look it up in Find A Grave - Crain Cemetery - Santa Rosa County - Florida

I have a book written by Norman E. Brake and published in 1993 that gives Brake information all the way back to Jacob Brake in North Carolina.

In his book he just says that Kizzie was born in Florida. I know my Great Grandmother - her sister- was born in Santa Rosa County, Florida - according to her death certificate; however, I am not sure about this.

One story says that Kizzie's and Mary's parents - Benjamin Brake and Mary Pridgen Pitts were living in Aalabama in 1840. Not sure about this. Cannot find them in the Alabama Census. I cannot track Benjamin Brake except for the 1850 Santa Rosa County Florida Census with his son Benjamin, by his first wife of Harriet Pitts. I also cannot get any information on Mary Pridgen Pitts except that she was married to a John Pitts before marrying Benjamin Brake.

A story that has been handed down is that Mary Pridgen who married a Pitts first then Benjamin Brake was Indian. I cannot find any information on this. Which brings me to the question of your last name -- Redfeather. Where did you get that name? Did you trace your Indian heritage?

You may already have the above information since your post was back in 2010 and I am now just finding it.

Would greatly appreceiate any info that I don't have listed.

You can contact me at mccombs@erec.net , if you have any questions.

Thanks

LeeQue McCombs

Re: Brake, Pilsdon, Dorset

OK, I have William Brake (1719-1787) & Mary Gillingham (1717-?) having four children:
#1 Henry Brake (1744-7878)-married Sarah Hobbs (1745-1769)
#2 Joseph Brake (1745-1800)
#3 Ann Brake (1747-?)
#4 Hugh Brake (1750-1813)
so the John Brake that married Sarah Cleal(e) being William's grandson (son of Henry Brake & Sarah Hobbs).
That may, or may not, be correct!

So…….regarding Isaac Brake.
Isaac Brake, b. 1809, unmarried, he was transported to Van Dieman’s Land (Tasmania) in 1834.
He was convicted of ‘shooting with intent to murder’ on the 15 April 1854, and sentenced to transportation for life (see records). He was transported to Van Dieman’s Land on the ship ‘Waterloo’ 18 Nov 1834.
Isaac Brake died in Launceston, Tasmania 12 Jul 1843.

And then…. Maria Brake’s husband, John Essex.
Maria married John Essex at Kinson chapelrey, Great Canford, Dorset 22 May 1832. They had 5 children born between 1833 and 1842.
John Essex, b. abt 1809, was convicted of ‘stealing a ram’ on 5 Jan 1841, and sentenced to transportation for 10 years (see attached).
In the interim he was jailed at Parkstone prison, then interred on a ‘prison hulk’, the Stirling Castle, moored at Devonport, and he was transported to Van Dieman’s Land on the ship ‘Moffat’ that departed 10 Aug 1842.
John Essex, in the meantime, served his sentence in Tasmania, but obviously decided to stay there; according to this site he died in 1866 (http://coad.perso.sfr.fr/names.htm) owning a hut on a garden of 25 acres near Glazier’s Bay, Tasmania.
I suppose that John Essex decided to stay in his cabin with a garden on 25 acres, probably being a whole lot better off than if he had gone back to a life of poverty in England. (A sheep stealer in a land of sheep, in 7th heaven!)
These sites mention John Essex:
http://www.convictrecords.com.au/convicts/essex/john/65256
http://foundersandsurvivors.org/pubsearch/convict/chain/om54...
regds, Barry
As to his wife and children? In the 1841 census (while her husband was sitting in the prison hulk) Maria Essex (nee Brake) and their 4 oldest children were living in Canford Magna, Dorset; she already described as a ‘widow’. The youngest daughter, at 9 years old, was a ‘servant’ at another address ‘on parish relief’.
From 1851 they lived in Parkstone, Dorset. Maria never remarried, and died in Poole, Dorset in 1890.

In the mid-1800’s they ran-out of prison space in England, and they used old hulks as emergency accommodation.
I read one report of a prisoner saying that 6 months on a hulk was worse punishment than 40 years transportation.
That confirms (mostly) what I have found in the meantime. The only difference being that I have John's wife, Sarah, buried 18 Mar 1853 aged 79, Pilsdon, Dorset. I think she, Sarah, might have been Sarah Cleal(e), born perhaps Musbury, Devon, perhaps the daughter of Henry Cleale & Mary Turber bapt. 21 Feb 1768 South Perrott, Devon.
I also haven't got past William.
My interest is in the family of John & Sarah's son, Henry Brake (1799-1874). He and his brother William both moved to Chelsea.
FYI, their brother Isaac, and their sister Maria's husband, John Essex, have interesting histories.

Hi there,

I am researching my ancestors and believe Josephine Duval may be the sister of my great, great grandfather- Alexander Duval. I am trying to find more information on Alexander and his parents - Charles Duvual who I believe was married to Francoise Benoit. ( Francoise may also be known as Marguerite-Francoise Benoit.) I have found information on the Internet of her DNA indicating she was Native American. I would love to find more information on this.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Joyce

Searching for Mollie Brake who married James Walter Satterfield in 1894

I have been searching a long time trying to find Mollie Brake who was born in 1875 and married in 1894.I saw on her marriage certificate where a Jarmen Brake married them. I have searched his line of family thinking he or his brother Clark Brake, both ministers, could have been kin to her. I found a Mattie "martha Brake in 1875 in the line but not Mollie. I have gone throughout that family line and find nothing where Mollie would fit. The Mattie Brake in 1875 married a Warfield and so not my Mollie I am looking for.
Mollie Brake is my g grandmother. My daddy is Comer Pulley. His mother was Lela Satterfield. Lela's mother was Mollie Brake Satterfield. I was told that her parents were Clark and Nancy Brake but they led me to the girl Mattie Brake and Jarmin Brake the minister.
Anyone with any info please write back.

Mollie Brake and James Walter Satterfield married 1894

Can anyone give me any info on Mollie Brakes' family?
A good source told me that her father was Clark Brake and her mother was Nancy Winters Brake. But I can't find a Mollie listed in any of the children. She was born around 1870. I see a Martha "Mattie" Brake listed but no Mollie.
I know she married James Walter Satterfield in 1894. On the Marriage license it shows a Josanan Brake as the minister.
In Henry Clark Brakes family he has a brother named Jemerson born 1846 who is a minister but not a Jasonan. So I don't know if I am on the right track or not. None of the daugthers married a Satterfield that I can see. Any info on the Brake family who fathered Mollie Brake would be greatly appreciated.
I do not know if Mollie Brake was married before JW Satterfield. I don't think she was but could be wrong. I like to confirm everything I key into my tree. Any help is appreciated.
thanks, Betty Jane Pulley Felts

Hello,

My name is Vincent Brake. I ran across a message that you posted about having information about Brake family members from Yetminster, England. I was particularly interested in your information about Ralph Brake and Sarah Shave. Apparently 3 of their sons, Ralph, Robert and James, had all come to Newfoundland, possibly at about the same time.

My information (mostly verbal with no real backup) is that 3 Brake brothers came to Newfoundland from England with fishing charters. One settled on the Burin Peninsula on the south east coast, one settled on the western coast in what is now the City of Corner Brook area and the other settled further up the western coast in what is known as the Codroy Valley area. I do not have dates for their arrival or when they are supposed to have settled in these areas or what their names were. There are large numbers of BRAKE family members in each of these areas and I am sure that there is a common relation between them.

If you go to www.myhertiage.com and enter “Brake Family Tree”, you will be able to see most of the information that I have entered into the programs family tree program. I have hit a bit of a brick wall at Charlie Brake, born approx. 1825, who was my great, great grandfather. I cannot find any information on how he came to be in the Burin Peninsula area or where he came from or who his immediate and former family members were.

If you have any data that could help I would really appreciate being able to gain access to it.

Good luck and happy hunting.

Respectfully yours,

Vincent M. Brake
Betty,

I have Henry Clark Brake 1815-1880 married Nancy Fowler 1828-1880. Their children that I have listed are as follows;

Jarman 1845 TN-1921 TN
married Rebecca Harper 1 jul 1874 at Dover, Stewart Co., TN
Children Thomas J. Brake 1872-? and John Tillman Brake 1879-1964, no Mollie.

Henry Clark Jr. 1846-1929
Frances 1850-?
Eudora 1852-?
Sallie 1855-aft. 1920

I have looked through my research and find no Mollie with
birth in 1875. However, most likely your Mollie is
related to this line of Brakes.

Dale Brake

John Brake was born in Cattistock in 1775 and died in 1859 Pilsdon. He married Sarah 1776-1855. John's father was Henry Brake, born in 1744 in Beaminster, baptised 27 May 1744 in Corscombe, and married to Sarah Hobbs on 13 April 1769 Corscombe. Henry died in Corscombe in 1778. Henry's father was William Brake, born in Corscombe in 1719. He married Mary Gillingham in 1744 at Corscombe and died and was buried there in 1787. I don't have anything on William's parents.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply. I have checked my info on John's wife Sarah and confirm that she died in 1853 and was buried at Pilsdon on 18th March. I have not yet found her maiden name anywhere. There is another Sarah Cleale 1755-1828 who married another John Brake, son of William and Mary Gillingham at South Perrott, Dorset, in 1787 with Hugh Brake as one of the witnesses. All very muddling! Would be enchanted to hear any stories!

Hi Ed,
My name is Dianne Brake-Scott. My parents are Michael Edward Brake (March 29, 1925- May 15, 2007) Last week I came across some pics on Facebook of Edward and Josephine, as well as other Brake family members. They would be my Great, Great, Great Grandparents. Their son Edward married Elizabeth Benoit. One of their children is Joseph Brake who is my father's father. My cousin told me that Edward (Josephine) was the son of Edward Brake and Katherine Vardy. Lots of Edwards :D I find it so interesting to look back at our ancestors. I have Charts that my niece gave me but they follow up more on the Elizabeth Benoit side of the family tree (after Chart 1) but I'm not quite sure how to read them. Hopefully some day I figure it all out. I attached Chart 1. #16 and #17 is where Edward/Josephine fit in (I think). Dianne

Re: Brakes from Esterwegen(sp?), Germany

Jennifer,
Hi - not sure if you'll get this...am replying to an Ancestry record of yours from 2009. I see your name is "Thomes" and you refer to Esterwegen and the Brakes. I am an Otten from Covington, KY/Ft Wayne, IN/Cincinnati, OH (I now live in Atlanta, but am from Covington, KY originally). My father was Stanley Otten...my grandfather was Louis Otten (Esterwegen)...my great grandparents were Gerhard Otten and Susanna Stricker (Esterwegen). Susanna Stricker's mother was Thekla Thomes from Esterwegen, my great, great grandmother. Does any of that sound or look familiar?

I started building out the Otten tree a month or so ago and have Ottens, Arens, Wiechmanns, and Kupers primarily built out thus far.

I visited Esterwegen back in 1978...met the burgermeister, Ulrich Otten and told him of my grandfather's emigration from Germany in 1890 or so...he then retrieved some old photos that the US Ottens sent back over time. The earliest one was of a baby and the photo had a photographer's name and city on it - - Covington, KY. I made a photo copy and brought it home to Cincinnati with me and showed it to my elderly aunts (father's sisters) - - - the photo was of my eldest aunt, Frances Otten, when she was a new born in 1897. So, it looked like their was a connection between Ulrich in Esterwegen and my tree.

Anyway,I'm going to start loading lots of old photos soon into my "Otten Family" tree. Would love to learn more about your Thomes side...sounds like there's a connection...

Let me know if this helps.
- Mike Otten

There is a family member in Deer Lake, NL who has a hugh amount of information on the Duval, Sparkes and so on and if you email me, I could email you her name and phone number.
Canadian George Washington Brake

I am looking for information about George Washington Brake born on Dec 17, 1878 in Petrolia, Ontario. He worked as an "Oil Producer" around the world, a good portion of this time in Peru working for British Petroleum. I believe he died in Alberta, possibly Calgary or Turner Valley. Would love to find out where he is buried and the date of his death. Any info about his ancestors would be great too! Thank you.

I have just found that my great great uncle, named Heinrich Oldiges born in 1840 in Esterwegen, son of Lucas Oldiges and Gesina Schmees, was married to Catherine Otten. They came to the USA in 1865 with their daughter Gesina who was 9 months old. Is this of any help to anyone? His brother, Hermann Oldiges, born in 1847, came later in 1881 and he was married to Gesina Memering. It seems the Oldiges, Memering and Otten families were numerous and many came to the USA around the same time. There was another brother, Wilhelm and a sister, Thekla, my great grandmother.

Re: Brakes in TX

It would help to know a little more about Ben's family, but here is one possibility for you to consider. There was a Jacob Brake who emigrated from Germany in the early 1700s and eventually ended up in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. There is a very comprensive, but difficult to navigate, data base of his descendants at http://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/cdm/compoundobject/collection/F....

Jacob had a son, Benjamin, who died prematurely and unexpectedly (but not before he married and had children) and perhaps as a consequence, several ancestors in that branch of the tree have the first name "Benjamin".

Also, several descendants of Jacob settled in Texas just before, and after the original homestead of several hundred acres were relinquished because of legal actions.

I went through the list of descendants in the database and found a Benjamin Eugene Brake, but he was born in the late 1800s or early 1900s, so that's not your Ben. There are several "Benjamins) in the list, but all having either no middle name listed, or a middle names that starts with something other than "E.".

I belong to the Johann Jacob Brake tree who settled in Virginia (Jacob of North Carolina started out in Virginia), and there is some speculation that Johann and Jacob were brothers. My Johann was thought at one time to have descended from nobility in northern Germany, just as the introduction to the Jacob Brake database says he was (or might have been). The nobility connection for Johann has been proven to have no merit, and I am confident the same is true for Jacob of NC.

Good luck in your search! If you want to read about the Virginia Johann tree, you can do so at www.perrybrake.com/brakelinie.html.

Refer to Puddeljumpers thread, I think we share info on our Brake line. It has links. But I did find at least 2 Ben's and a Michael but, they are on the east coast.
This fellow below was the only listing I found in the Brake tree w texas:

Brake, Joseph

B: 1807 Edgecombe, Edgecombe, N Carolina, USA

D: Sep 1847 - Polk, Texas, USA

Parents

Jesse Brake 1772 NC – 1835 NC, USA

Priscilla/Patience PRICE 1775 – 1854

Siblings

Rachel Brake 1802 – 1820

Wiley Brake 1803 – 1870

John Brake 1805 – 1825

William Brake 1811 – 1882

Pennina Brake 1817 – 1860

Jessie Brake's (Joseph's Grandparents) Parents:

Parents

Jacob Brake Sr. 1750 – 1830

Patience "Brake" 1755 – ?
It looks like your Texas Line may have originated in Edgecombe, North Carolina. But I still have holes in this tree and can't verify how accurate it is. Anyway, I hope this helps and you can look at my tree Frosig-Heinz, Mel's Melting Pot the Brake Line is under my daughter Haley Respress, her grt grt gpa Daniel married Harriet Brake of Alabama.
