Braaten/Braathen/Britton -Hayward, Saywer County, Wisconsin
My Grandmother's birth record name is Jennie Braaten. She was born 12/18/1888. Her parents were Carl Braaten/Mathea Nelson from Drammen, Askershus, Norway. Carl went by Charley Britton. They settled in Hayward, Saywer County, Wisconsin. My grandmother changed her name to Geneveive Britton. There were 5 other children William, Norman, Benjamin, Clara and Sadie All but Benjamin and Jennie went west to Seattle or Portland. I beleive they all used Britton. I have never found any of Jennie's siblings decendants. Carl came to America with 4 brothers. I beleive Carl and Mathea lived near each other in Norway, but I think they married in the US.

Have you had any luck with your Braatens yet? I am looking for a Charles A. Brighton who left Bergen, Norway Spring of 1861 traveling first to Quebec, Montreal then Madison, Wis. to his Uncle Ole Brighton's place. I have information on my Charles Brighton *after* 1861, but not much before. I have not been able to sort out what his Norwegian name was. Brighton is most likely ~not~ it! LOL. Have statement saying his father was also Ole Brighton, a sea captain and mom was Sigree. Uncle Ole was the only relative he had in the States and did not marry that we know of, dying sometime 1861-64. His pension application didn't mention any siblings, but I have always wondered if there were any. Do you know much about Braatens in Norway?
I'm also looking at these variants; Britzein, Brixien, Broughton, Broten, and Bryten. If you find anything-give me a shout.
My Charles married Charity E. Dun in 1875 in Texas.

My Charles was born in Norway in 1856. He came to America in 1879. He had 3 brothers and 1 sister that came to America and settled in the Sawyer county area. Their parents are Ole O. Braathen and Katrine Oldsdatter Braathen. Two brothers and a sister stayed in Norway. It doesn't sound like the same family.

My ggrandfather was Karl Bernhard Oleson Braathen. Born in Vestfossen, Buskerud, Norway 4/10/1856. He came to Wisconsin 5/1879. He traveled with an Erik Oleson Braathen, borh 1844. I think Erik was a cousin not a brother. He changed his name to Charles Britton. He used Olsen at first. He had brothers and sisters. come here as well. Olaus, Edvard, Johan, Christian, Caroline and Olava Christian went back after a couple of years.
The Braathen family I am related to is from Buskerud. Near Drammen. Braathen is the name of the farm or land they lived on. There are lots of Braathens.

Re: Braaten/Braathen/Britton -Hayward, Saywer County, Wisconsin
I have a scan of a photo of Jacob and Caroline(Braaten) Olson with a group of their contemporaries. I believe they may be Carolines siblings and their spouses seeing as her brothers sent for her to come to Hayward. Is there a way I can e-mail the scan to you to see if you would be able to identify any of people in it?
