At one time in History, the Boyds WERE in line to the Scottish throne. Robert Boyd was the Regent of Scotland for King James III. Robert's son, Thomas married Princess Mary, sister of King James III. Thomas and Mary had children before King James III. Their children were next in line to the throne.

So... there's a wee bit of truth to your family legend. However, it dates back to the 15th century and probably does not connect to your Boyds.
